Title: Grapes,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Post by: qahtan on August 25, 2009, 00:41:45
Do any of you grow grapes. again I am just curious.

We do not grow grapes,,,,,,,,,
As I said in an earlier post  wild blackberry's do not grow here in Ontario, but  wild grapes do, they are every where just as blackberry's are in UK.
Many people not only harvest the grapes but also the dead vines at the end of fruiting season, the dried vines are used as a base for Christmas decorations, door wreaths etc.

It is said there are over 60 wineries in the Niagara area, most  of the wines are pretty good.

Just a bit of Niagara trivia I thought you may  be interested in.  qahtan

I don't but I'm sure that there are plenty of folks on here that do!

I certainly have plot neighbours that do. One grows green ones outside, another black ones in a greenhouse.  Fingers crossed it looks like both will have a good harvest this year.

There are of course wineries in England, and although I don't drink wine myself I'm told that it's generally very good.

I don't personally but one of my lottie neighbours has one climbing over his fence - just turning colour now, lots of bunches. Asked him if he made wine from them, but apparently eats them as table grapes!! Am thinking of trying one over my back fence. With global warming perhaps we shall all be growing them soon.

Here are a couple of shots from last year. The vine is 3 years old and grows on an uncovered pergola against the south facing side of my shed.

The yield is small but tasty. this year promises to be better.

It is "Boskoop Glory"

At £24.99 it was pricey but 6 feet tall and a well established specimen that produced grapes the year after planting.

we also have a booksop, grown in a black bucket in the poly, we have 3 fully formed bunches on it, all nicely ripening now, grown in a restricted form, 3 branches only and only allowed to produce 1 bunches per branch ;D

All these pictures are very inspiring!
I'm going to be planting my grapevine this Autumn (thanks Saddad  :D) and hope to get some to eat next year.
There are several vineyards in and around Sussex, I've tried a few  ::), and they were all very good  ;D (not cheap tho!)
