Title: Tree roots

We have a tree (don't know what it is, just moving in) that is planted next to next doors' house wall.  We should like to cut this tree down but are worried that if we do so removing the roots will damage the wall.  Is it better to just trim the tree, which is in the way, or to cut it down to stump level?

Cut it down, a box of stump killer, job done. Don't make your own stump killer it could cause problems in the soil for years.

I am assuming as you don't know what it is that it's deciduous. If so, I think Ace is on the ball. If it's a conifer, you can cut it to the ground and it won't regrow anyway.

I'd suggest asking the neighbours if they know and tell them what you are doing.
Explain that you have taken into account the tree roots and hopefully have happy neighbours too.
