8 shallots in pots indoors.  ;D ;D ;D

I thought shallots could be planted outside at this time of year, why in pots indoors??

If I was planting sets I'd put them straight out. I've never done well with shallots so I'm now growing walking onions, which have been in since October.

Yippee !  First sowing of the year!  Have just done Onions (Red Baron), Dahlias (Redskin), Morning Glory, Sweet Peas, Chillis and Parsley.  All inside in modules/loorolls in my conservatory.

Still grinning like a lunatic  ;D ;D ;D

Ooops - reading the above, I'd better check my few shallots - maybe I'll go and do them at the lottie nex week ....

Planted four rows of shallots, two rows of Yellow Moon and two rows of Pikant. :)

Also met Dave down the lottie not seen him before what a nice chap, he gave me some garlic so I planted a row of them. :)

Also prepared two more beds, will try and put some onions in this weekend although I think Jane wants to get going on the other plot  :o

Happy Happy Happy ;D ;D ;D

Hi Saddad,

Yes - I know, I thought of doing it later but in Febs Gardeners World Mag it says "Sow February, Plant on april, plant out June.    I only did 6 so plenty more for later! ;D

I am a bit of a novice with it tho .... tempted by cheap seeds at 3 packs for £1!! ;)  ;D

This is early sowing for me - last year I didn't sow anything until mid March!  Probably won't do anything else for another 3 weks now ...
Title: Re: What have you sown today??
Post by: saddad on February 20, 2009, 11:04:09
If you have them in the house they will germinate ok but the foilage is very tender... anything below 5c and they will turn white and die... but ifyou keep them warm they will get huge... try pinching out the tops if they get to 6 leaves and see it they sprout from the leaf nodes, I've never been brave enough to do it myself...  :-[

Just finished sowing Aubergines, more Broad Beans, 3 different varieties. (determined to have a freezer full this year!)
But have now run out of windowsill space as also have previously sown veg, flowers etc. on there! :(

Off to the garage to see if I can knock something together to get more on! ;D

Post by: pippy on February 20, 2009, 11:21:04
They are all in my conservatory.  It is heated - kept to 16 degrees at night at the mo ....

I'm planning getting one of those mini greenhouses with a set of shelves for hardening off in a month or so so I will be running in and out of the house with them!  I think that may slow them down too?

Thanks for the advice re: pinching out!  I'll be doing the same with the sweet peas!
Title: Re: What have you sown today??
Post by: Barnowl on February 20, 2009, 11:39:10
Presumably you only pinch out the flowers and the chillies - don't imagine the onions would take kindly to it?
Title: Re: What have you sown today??
Post by: pippy on February 20, 2009, 12:41:54
Oh gosh no - don't pinch out Onions!   I may not know what I'm doing with the flowers but that bit I am certain of!   and the onions and sweet peas will be going in a cold frame a soon as they are established to slow them down ...

Can never remember how and when to pinch out the chillis ... is it 3 leaves or five?  And dont't you have to keep pinching out as it grows to get it to bush?    I seem to forget every year ... must be early dementia ;D

I have given in and sown banana shallots, onions, aubergines and some biannual flowers that I'm hoping I might get to flower this year if I start them early enough!

I confess I've never pinched out chilli plants, I did try this on some of my aubergines last year but they cropped so late I didn't notice any difference.... :-\

Here you go Glosterwomble.........pretty it aint, and I should have pre-drilled holes for the screws to avoid the wood splitting...........but once it is covered in seed trays, no-one will notice anyhow. (I hope!) And it does the job! ;D
Now glad we keep all the odds n sods of wood in the garage!

I just wait until I think the chilli looks strong enough to handle the trauma - I think that usually translates into  5 or 6 leaves.

I sowed my Onions and sweet peas in January and since then nothing!

I just can't get enthused this year must be the weather!

As it happens I do most of my sowing towards the end of March so there is still plenty of time for me to get 'the urge!

I sowed summer and winter leeks, pak soi, 2 varieties of auberiges, marigolds, sweet peas, 2 varieties of sweet peppers, cape gooseberries and a bush tomato.

Resowed red and yellow pointed sweet peppers. The seeds are old and difficult to germinate. But I bought them in Greece and Spain and I like to grow my own souvenirs.
Also bean Ilerda. I never got one to germinate outdoors, so I try to get them germinated inside  this year. The first batch still rotted, but I will persevere. Victory will be mine one day, and then I’ll eat plates and plates of fresh beans!

Hooray! have now sowed sweet peas, onion sets, tomatoes, chillis, marigolds, basil, tobacco flowers, purple sprouting and normal broccoli and sunflowers. Obviously all indoors except the onions. Going to do leeks tonight.

Will do some early peas outside at the weekend if it's warmed up a bit.

Feel very reconnected with the soil now.

Non-edibles! Cosmos, verbena bonariensis, french marigold, nemophila, pansy, teasel and sweet peas. I know it's maybe a bit early for some (and a bit late for sweet peas?) but they are all leftover seed so no great loss if they don't work. It was too windy for the allotment and I had to do something!

To test the ground broken into a fine tilth by my recently purchased Mantis, I have directly sown a few of the following to test direct sowing instead of sowing in pots all the time:

Early Nante carrots
Crimson Forrest red spring onions
Scarlet Globe radish
Boltardy beetroot
Paris Silverskin onion

In pots:  Parsley, Thyne, Basil

I have also sown 8 varieties of flowers and transplanted Arcadia and Parthenon broccoli to their final position.

I wasn't going to sow any seed indoors this year, but try getting as much of the plot dug as possible & just do lots of direct sowing over the next couple of months. However, OH is tucked up under the duvet feeling rubbish so I could resist seed sowing no longer. Today I sowed the following in pots:

Pepper `heatwave'
Squash `Avalon'
Tomato `Suncherry' and `Garden Pearl'
Cucumber `Telegraph Improved'
Courgette
lemongrass (optimistic I think as no heat?!)
err... & one other thing that escapes me

 ;D
