Title: SEVERE RANT!!
Post by: telboy on November 11, 2014, 16:07:34
I've just sent this complaint to BT.

'I have just received your invitation to renew my line rental 'saver'.
I would appreciate 5 reasons for a 13.5% increase over the last billing period.
I live in a rural area/make very few calls/don't use your internet service(except for using your line for which I have NO option)/don't watch your sport service(am I subsidising this?)
An explanatory reply is requested!'

I received a phone call very quickly after sending this. The only satisfaction is that he will escalate my complaint to a higher minion. I have insisted on a written reply.
Watch this space :BangHead:

If we could get a mobile phone signal here I would ask BT to remove the line altogether.

In defence of BT I find their FON hotspot system is fantastic.  As soon as I pass a hotspot the phone pings and all that is needed is to log on to the internet.  Mega.

I have to say I hardly every make any called.  Tend to use the house phone for 0800 numbers, most people call me very mobile, so the home phone tends to be simply the annoyance of Indian call centres and people wanting me to have insulation and PV on the roof.  Do agree that the price is very high for the phone, when then price of mobile is falling and you get more and more for the price.  Really think it is time they threw in all the calls for free.    We used to get the call minder free but they suddenly started charging without warning.

I suppose that the cost of the infra structure in rural areas is quite high.

Given this is the Severe Rant thread :) I don't think anything should be for free.  Cheap is fine though ...

Free just means it is abused.  Like Water Rates - people in flats subsidising people with gardens and sprinklers, and conscientious people subsidising lazy people with dripping taps ... I don't think that is a good system. (Mega profits for Water Companies is a wrong-turn for Capitalism too, but that's a different topic)

What ever is 'given' to one...there is always some that will still abuse their 'gifts'. But I do agree some what with 'conscientious people' bit. But have you ever thought of ...how much is people in flats able to reuse their water? It is not all about how much comes out of the tap, but how much is going down the drain too.
We don't have water meters, but pay annual payment...but trust me, it is still not cheap and the price goes up yearly. I use most of our useable waste water in garden...no hose or sprinkles used over here and as the result the garden look lush (even during dry time)and it saves 'flats people's subsidies'...AND most of our neighbours do the same!
Around here I can see more water wasted by the water company itself...all those water leaks and other problems that take ages to sort out...what problems I've seen,it would take entire town have leaky taps to get that quantity of water together :BangHead:

Ranting is gooood... it makes one feel better...better out than in... :icon_cheers:

Me too  I'm on a meter but it would be MUCH cheaper for me just to use mains water, on which considerable effort has been taken to make it fit for drinking, as irrigation water as compared to the cost of installing a decent amout of water storage :(

The payback on the water storage solutions I have installed is measured in decades, if not eons!, rather than years.  Even the payback on a simple waterbutt is not good, most especially for someone on a fixed-payment Water Rate. I would like Building Regulations to mandate decent waste/rain water storage in new builds, its got to be cheaper than building more reservoirs and having hose pipe bans.

They already do here as well as insulation in walls and roofs and double or triple glazing for new builds.   New builds are now expected to be passive consumers of energy and have water saving and/or recycling systems plus rain collection for flushing toilets and garden irrigation.    They have strict regs for renovations and tarnsformations of old buildings too.

Hooray!

I just cannot understand why our politicians can't do that ... sod the lobbyists and vested interests, once the legislation is in place its the same for all players, not to mention that the economies of scale that then ensue mean that the actual cost is often peanuts.

Passive House, done well and avoiding installing a boiler and wet central heating system altogether, probably costs nothing extra (spend the boiler & radiator budget on insulation and triple glazing instead) - and then near to £zero heating costs for the lifetime of the building.  Beggars belief to me that this is not already the norm here.

Well it looks like my thread has been well and truly hijacked!

This is the reply in writing that I requested, it may be of interest to Palustris & Digaroo and others who suffer with any Company that holds a monopoly.

Hello Mr Warner

Thanks for your email, Im sorry to hear youre not happy with our price increases

Our industry is a very competitive and each year telecoms companies raise their prices. When we do it, we're crystal clear with our customers about what is changing and make sure we invest to keep our business improving:

•Our aim is to make BT a better business with a better future and we are always looking at ways to improve our product portfolio and ensure we have products and services that best suit the needs of our customers. Sometimes this involves having to raise prices
•We are investing heavily in the future of the network to deliver better quality of service and faster broadband speeds
•We are still committed to offering our customers value for money. We have an award winning broadband service, the biggest network of Wi-fi hotspots (over 11 million) and we include free calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers in our inclusive calling plans

If you wish to leave us we can release you from your contract by calling 0800 800 030

Best Wishes

Cyril Ming
BT Digital Care

What a name the poor unfortunate has to bear! With regard to the highlighted comment, I have never heard of an unacceptable price rise (now 22.8% in two years) being 'value for money' considering the 'service' has little use for me. Also the charge for 1571 was a stinker!!

Sounds like BT has given you a 'generic blah blah' answer and it really doesn't explain what the price increase would do for you, particularly when the increase is so high.
I've had my 'issues' with BT in past and won't entertain them or any company who's name start with 'British'....they just rely to their old name sake and don't look after their customers, particularly 'old' customers...they do give offers to new ones in expense of 'old' ones. :angry4:
....and I suspect they are trying to make you the 'fall guy'..one of many who are going to finance their current 'offers'.. :BangHead:

How about letter to watchdog....?!

BT just stands for BT, like BP means BP. No British in the name at all. Just 2 letters

Are you sure....I've always understood it is 'British Gas'....'British telecom'.....etc...?

That doesn't mean they're still British owned.

As two of the reasons for the increase is for broadband they seem to be saying you are paying for the broadband improvements.   since you did not use broadband I should ask for a reduction since those charges should be included in their broadband fee.

No it doesn't ....though the 'B' still stand for 'British' as just for name's sake. What I meant with my reply is, that I've had too many 'runnings' with companies who's name start with 'British'. There is plenty of people about who think company being British gas...or Bt etc...they are some reason 'better'/'superior'...???!!! :drunken_smilie: :BangHead:

goodlife - now there's an idea!!

Obbelix - BT is a British Company. Wikipedia explains the structure.

Digeroo - As stated, I have no option but to use their line for broadband. My speed is approx. 2 Mbps. As for mobile use, my wife has 'pay to go' & has to go upstairs to get a signal. Good 'ere innit?

Did you like the bit 'If you wish to leave us we can release you from your contract by calling 0800 800 030'?
That's real customer service!!!

At least you can get line based Broadband. We cannot and are never likely to be able to either. Too far from a junction box and they are not going to put fibre optic cables in to four properties. So the improvement to Broadband services just does not even apply to us.
We opted for a 12 month package and paid, they still managed to take out the quarterly payment as well though. You try explaining that to some Asian chap who can barely speak English.
As I said I would have the line removed altogether if we could get a mobile phone signal.

Palustris,
I understand your situation entirely & my sympathies are with you.
Your situation, like mine, 'ain't ' gonna change any time soon.
There must be literally thousands of us poor souls in limbo who enjoy peace and quiet but get screwed for trying to communicate from time to time.
I will endeavour to give BT a hard time .

We  are with plusnet which is owned by BT but separate. I don't think it is cheap at just over £30 a month but we have a good service and a call centre based in Sheffield. That is definitely a plus!!

Have to say that 2mbps is pedestrian in the extreme since my phone thinks I am getting 65.  Though a check through BT gives only 12mb, but no time, could be per hour.   Seems our county council has contracted BT to upgrade the internet, so presume we pay for that as well whether we use it or not.

Not sure the mobile phone companies are any better.  We recently lost Vodafone for two months and they were pretty bad about it.  I made less than 1/2% of my monthly call allowance, and to start with they only offered me a 50% reduction.  After hassling with them for literally hours, I refused to pay anything.  They say they do not have to provide a service at a particular location.  But having said they covered my area they cut it off but still expected me to pay.  :BangHead: So I got a Tmobile pay as you go and it turned out to be overpay as you go and I made about 5 phone calls for £10.  So now with 3, told they can be a nightmare as well, but so far things are ok for me a lot cheaper than Vodafone.

No Bs in the names but still a load of right Bs.

Constantly having a battle with BT who will only talk to my OH because his name is on the account.  Had a real nightmare with them because the wire to the house had deteriorated you could see the bare metal wire, seems they put in the wrong type in the first place, but when they tested the line it was ok so refused to send an engineer but it cut out every time it rained.    In the end I had to agree to pay for it and the call out charge was enormous, but finally they admitted it was their responsibility and I did not pay. :BangHead:

But I still like fon, but seeing the price of talktalk it seems a rather expensive luxury.  In some areas everyone is on talktalk so the fon is useless.  Maybe talktalk would be cheaper.

Well! A decent newspaper has printed an article highlighting the 'cartel' that is screwing the likes of you and me.
Next year it will be repeated!! What a bunch of thieving barstewards.

Bring back the modem!  Da-di-la, Da-di-la, da-diiiiiiii-la, or whatever.  A most reassuring sound ever invented.  Eee, I remember the days of acoustic coupling modem at a rate of 1 micro-byte per annum, and that's if you were lucky!
