Is this the dreaded Couch grass? ??? if it is then the council did a rubbish job of eradicating it, they were supposed to spray and rotavate but it didn't work or they didn't spray it. >:( and it's clinging to alot of earth. ???

Interesting, can tell you what it is not though! Not couch, convolvulus(either kind), dandelion, ragwort, silver weed, ground elder, fireweed or dock. Looks as if it could (guess realyy) be a kind of buttercup, flowers would help.

a second thought-if it is creeping buttercup it likes slightly heavy ground ie.clay and on the damp side. is this like your plot, Roy?

Very interesting but please don't tell me I could have just turned it over in the soil :'( as I have had a back breaking couple of hours up there today :'( Does anyone have or know where I can see pictures of the baddy weeds? ???
P. S.Yes Kerry I did notice a little clay in the bed but not all over :-\ and it was wet and sticky but we had a whole day of rain recently :(

Look on the left hand side for 'Full weed listing' and then 'All available listed weeds' and you'll find creeping buttercup there.

Not creeping buttercup, the root system is far too robust for that. It has not got the thong like roots of your plant. I would think looking at this that if you did just turn it in you would merely increase it. Dig it out, sorry!

I would go for creeping buttercup, If you have spent time digging it out then no harm done. when clearing a plot for sowing I adopt the attitude that if I didn't put it in it does not stay in.

Thanks for the input Guys n Gals, Creeping Buttercup is the closest I can get to match, so there's no easy way out, ??? just wish the soil would dry out a bit to make it a little easier to weed, happy days. ::)

It looks like buttercup to me Roy, If You have a patch coming let em get some leaf Wait for a dry day and give em a spraying of roundup , If there are only a few just paint it on leaves with a little brush no need to spray.. Jim

What you are looking at Roy is buttercup, probably creeping, that the council very kindly did turn in. The white tissue is the petioles that have etiolated as the crown reaches towards the light (bit like forcing rhubarb) after it was buried. If you had turned it in too then you would be digging it out again in a few weeks.

Been there, done it, Tim. Roy has my complete sympathy. His description of his soil brought back memories and I know what he is in for.

Yep, looks like creeping buttercup like wot I got on my lotty. When I took the lotty over it was covered in this weed (plus loads of others). I have been digging it out ever since but it is getting easier with fewer and fewer plants appearing each year.
To be truthful it is never that difficult to dig out (compared with dock, bindweed and couch) and generally bulks up the compost heap.
However, I must say that they are quite pretty :)

I think you'll find that if you leave them, it's the buttercups that will be doing the runners!! ;)
