My seedlings are at roughly the same stage, but I'm doing an awful lot more walking backwards and forwards between the house and the greenhouse, if nights are cold (my g/house isn't heated)

Thanks - I assume that's poles/beans in the row. How much between the two rows?
Title: Re: 2017 Progress Reports
Post by: johhnyco15 on April 02, 2017, 15:43:52
if your using a normal A frame around 3ft should be fine i put plastic troughs in the middle all drilled out and just water the troughs  and it goes straight to the roots   and one other thing once you plant your beans out protect them with fleece or debris netting until the get established as the wind will cut them to bits hope this helps

Thank you the trough idea sounds great  :icon_cheers:

I only put about 18 inches between my bean poles.  I have taken to putting flowerpots with compost in them between the rows.  The pots are free from the garden centre recycling bins and the compost stays moist, and the plants get a feed every time they are watered.

There was a discussion about a year ago on the best type of support for runners. Some prefer A frames, some X frames (my favourite) but some have other personal preferences. Those in windy locations often favour wigwams for obvious reasons. Some use traditional 8 foot canes, others posts, poles and quite exotic constructions with beans growing up twine, wires, or even nets. It's well worth planning this carefully too. Nothing worse than having a major collapse coz you can rarely ever get it upright again.

Cheers

And yet it does happen on windy sites.  Many a time has one of these corkscrew ground stakes helped me 'rescue' a leaning bean feature after gales.

But as you say, best of all build so strong that it is less likely to happen.  The main problem with a row structure is that for best light we are supposed to arrange it North/South to minimise shading, whereas the prevailing winds mostly come from the West.  Shading surrounding plants is another reason why teepee arrangements are often preferred to rows of beans.

all my bean frames run north to south and as the wind on our site normally comes from the south west I'm  fairly sheltered  however the odd storm runs down the east coast in the summer which can cause devastation to an ill prepared frame

I have 4ft wide raised beds on my plot with a foot and a half wide path between them.   After a few years of struggling to fit the beans in to the system such that I didn't walk all over the beds and minimised shading other plants out I came up with the idea of making a row of arches over the paths using a section of old blue water pipe to join 2 long bamboo poles together rather than the usual pointy topped affair.  It works really well and I plant brussells sprouts in the middle of the beds between the bean arches which don't mind the shade in the summer.

When I plant beans I put the poles closer together about a 6" spacing now and I haven't noticed any drop in productivity per plant.

That's a coincidence Johnny that fits in with my Frost Zone chart I produced in 1999

see here: http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Data/Frost%20zones/Frost%20Zones.htm (http://www.thegardenersalmanac.co.uk/Data/Frost%20zones/Frost%20Zones.htm)

(click on the map to enlarge it)

It shows your area with a value of 17 and my area with a value of 21 a difference of 4 weeks.

I have had a gut feeling over the last few years that " Global Warming" has affected our climate by a bout a week so this would fit in with your prediction of 3 Weeks.

Is this a coincidence or not?  :glasses9:

I may plant my early potatoes the week after Easter subject to the weather.

I was talking to a 'newbie' on the plot the other day and we were talking about the weather (among other things) and I came  up with a new expression and that was: This is "Temptation Weather" we are experiencing at the moment and I also mentioned that my planting out time was usually mid May, and that I won't be tempted by a bit of sunshine!

In my younger day I generally planted out at " Whitsuntide" which has been replaced by the Spring Bank Holiday which is slightly later.

Then if last year is anything to go by May was quite cold! i.e. it seemed to have swapped places with a normal April.

Based on that I will decide as time and the weather progresses

The ones you saw are new stock I have purchased.

I lift my corms every year then plant them out again about now, in fact I planted them out earlier this week.

The main reason I lift & plant them each year as they have to fit in with my rotation plan. That is I don't have a dedicated bed for them, so each year they move around the plot. Last year I had them on Plot 19 this year they are in Plot 20 i.e. about 80ft away from where they were last year.

I am growing Black Velvet, Bonfire, Cream Perfection, Lowland Queen,  Pink Lady and the best of the ones I lifted last year.

This is Cream Perfection:

As you can see the Tomatoes are of a size suitable for planting out (about 3-4 weeks  too early)

Peppers should be OK for planting out at the end of May.

Sadly it was my turn for a visit from Brock the Badger as you can see here.

Luckily the bed has not been planted out yet but it is well manured hence the visit I guess!

Planted out six Tenderstar and six Cobra bean plants in tubs today - well protected against the wind with bubble wrap, one week earlier than last year. Tomorrow, I plan on getting 3 courgettes and 3 squashes in the ground too (cloche protected). I need the space in my small greenhouse so that I can plant up the tomatoes and cucumbers in their final pots.

Well today is planting out day for me - the poly is full of trays so the beetroot and some cabbages have to get planted out to make way for the next batch of seedlings.
No disasters so far this year although the chickens found a tray of turnips and demolished the lot of them.

everything bar  (pathetic T&M} begonia plugs are finally out today.  I did the slug nematodes last week and the ground is moist so its a good time to plant out. I even put courgettes out but under temporary net cages and so far so good after four days. Runner beans out today, behind a windbreak. I am not growing squash or cucs this year and any tomatoes will be at home, they are still in small pots waiting for the first flowers. I noticed that a neighbour has rampant leek moth, so no point putting leeks out, may well just bung them in a bucket at home. Its awfully slow up there, seed germination is lagging this year and so is weed germination. Hoeing is easy for now

Update:

I seem to be well in advance of previous years this year,  possibly by as much as 2-3 weeks which I put down to the mild virtually non-existent winter.

In my pre-retirement days my "planting out" date was the nearest weekend to May 14th which often coincided with 'Whitsuntide' plus the late frost were unlikely, this year (tongue in cheek) I planted out much sooner.

This was the state of play this morning ( sorry for the quality of the pictures ---the weather was overcast and I only had my phone camera with me which shakes like hell when I use it)

My Tomatoes & Cucumbers and some early lettuce in the 12x8

Next job is to give my herbaceous border a facelift, weather permitting will try and complete it this weekend!

If any of you are growing similar crops I would be interested to hear/see how they are progressing so that I can compare notes!

Very purty I have just made a base for a new greenhouse which can double for a sitting area for the time being.

Trouble is  I don't have the time to SIT DOWN what with refurbishing my garden at home and planting out at the allotment.

Things are being made worse with this dry weather as my young plants and transplanted perennials are suffering.

As I have mentioned many times before I don't believe in watering stuff outdoors, I usually water stuff under cover or in containers the rest is in the lap of the gods!

But even I have had to relent slightly from the norm due to the lack of rain although the forecast in my area for tomorrow is rain all day.

I am having a day off tomorrow going to get a wet inside as I am going to watch the playoff final on the big screen in my local.

best of luck tomorrow  it hardly ever rains here on the sunshine coast that is the reason we need a seating area we are so  bl@!"%&* knackered after all the watering and i only water tomatoes beans and the plants in the  greenhouses but its still 3 hrs of pumping water by  hand the grass needs cutting 3 times a week so a nice place to sit and relax after all that is essential  :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny: :sunny:

Picked a kilo of Rasps over the weekend so jam time for me - Raspberry Jam along with blackcurrent jelly is my favourite.
Picking and shelling Broad Beans like mad - never had so many and the freezer if filling up.
Strawberries - complete write off but that is my fault - better luck next year.

So far despite a lack of rain it is an excellent year despite a few self made disasters.  My main issue this year is where to put everything as I seem to have largely over estimated the area I have.

blackcurrant picking is in full swing here, thankfully only ben conan so far, lovely big fruits. Ben sarek has a way to go yet. I have lots, eat them every single day at breakfast. Hate picking them but doing it bit by bit ie every handful is a breakfast and a bowl is a week. No point thinking sprigs as the fruit is ripening in stages

Lettuce, bit of a glut but my trusty veg (expensive ) juicer is helping me out, I must be having 12 veg a day at the moment. I might make some soup later, lettuce is good for that too. I am glad I was selective and restrained this year, I can`t waste veg. Chard and spinach are cropping every day, also small courgettes. They are good ones, alexander, hold their fruits high so I can see them and nice to eat

Garlic and shallots are all up, dried for a couple of days, tidied up and now drying longer term. Fantastic crop, autumn planted, year on year

invicta are picked, hinnonmaki are turning red. Blueberries swelling, still green

Fennel ready to pick in stages and the house is full of vases of alstroemeria, gorgeous

Garlic and Shallots romping away, b.sprouts doing well as are courgettes and may have some goosberries to harvest soon (no idea when there ready). Chillis and tomatoes going back into greenhouse this afternoon now the 4 ants nets have been removed and i have managed to get the shades down :) Carrots just popping through the soil and 3rd lot of peas and beans failed to come up so i am abandoning the crops this year (although man in market said he might have some plants thursday so might sucum and buy some).

Tomatoes are coming on well had a few ripen but not the bulk as yet, courgettes keep coming and have a litteral heap of them now in kitchen for grating and freezing. Shallots were a little small but are all dry now for storing.

3 spare beds in greenhouse are being prepared for winter salad, carrots etc

Been looking at coshes for the trugs and i am looking at £40 each if i buy something (not going to happen) so been looking at making something with PVE blue pipe but this would give me storage issues. So considering 2wests build your own connectors and metal poles which i can remove and store easier and will have the weight to not be blown off so easily.

More than plenty of ripe tomatoes and cucumbers from the greenhouse and so far over 1/2kg of ripe chills of various varieties (and the really hot ones are just starting to colour). Potatoes in sacks have done well - plenty and a good size. Down at the allotment 90+ onions (bedfordshire champ, ailsa craig, zebrune and red savona) are currently drying. Garlic crop was good this year, with nice big bulbs. Beetroot has done fine, parsnips looking as though they'll be big. Cabbages and Kale all doing well as are brussels and swedes. Chard producing masses. Peas have done well, as did broad beans. Borlotti and Runners just starting to produce. Squashes have plenty of good sized fruit on (especially harlequin and black futsu). Sweetcorn looking like the best I've grown....

... Carrots....... Why is it I can grow all the above without any problems, but I just can't grow carrots. I've managed to grow 4 that were vaguely edible this year, which is to be fair probably 4 more than last year, but I just can't get them to grow!
