Title: Blackcurrants
Post by: AnnieD on June 18, 2018, 15:11:48
I inherited a currant bush with my allotment.  Last year it didn't fruit (think I pruned it too hard). This year it has LOADS of berries and they are turning purple so I would guess they are blackcurrants?  Never been fond of them to eat as is, so any suggestions for what I can do wit them? Thanks

Blackcurrant vodka is a great alternative for Cassis, to make Kir or Kir Royal. The fruit can then be taken out to use for adult triffles or on Pavlovas!
Blackcurrants also make a very good jam!

I like everything blackcurrant.
You can make cordial.  Crumble.  Tarts.  Muffins
I zap in the microwave with some apple juice and serve with joghurt.  Jam.  I am going to experiment with microwave jam this year.
I make a crumble with a shortbread base with makes a sort of gooey biscuit.
Then there is cheesecake with a layer of blackcurrant on the top.
Add other fruits for a summer fruit pudding.  Blackcurrant charlotte.
Sorbet zap with applejuice in microwave.  Put through sieve and then freeze.  Take out of the freezer every half hour and give it a stir.
Another zap with applejuice and then just serve with chicken or turkey or better duck.

I just eat them straight from the bush, but I have varieties which are good for that.  I also have a very poor sour tasting abilities.

Agree with others, blackcurrant vodka = wonderful adult Ribena!

Would add ice cream to the list, either as blackcurrant ripple or just blackcurrant ice cream.

Blackcurrant brandy/gin/vodka/cordial.   Spiced blackcurrant jelly - make jelly in the usual way but add cinnamon/star anise/vanilla pod when cooking the fruit.

Home-made Ribena is brilliant ... it actually tastes of blackcurrants!  But try and bottle it in small bottles as it can go mouldy if opened and left for too long.

I've just topped and tailed 5lbs of bkacurrants. Some will go for a crumble, somefor the freezer. Its fiddly but worth it. My pal freezes hers first. She says they top and tail more easily that way  :blob7:
