Well we are waiting for the results to be issued. Today is the day that we find out whether all that hard work was good or all for nothing. My son is waiting here with baited breath to find out if he can go to Uni or not. Hope that he does ok and gets in. We shall know in a while when he gets back from the school to let me know and I can let everyone else know too.
Good luck to all who have taken them and are waiting for theirs too.

Good luck to your son. A little while ago I saw some students on TV having their results read out. One poor lad's blood pressure went up when he was waiting. Fortunately he had brilliant results.

Best of luck. I am not going into work this year, but hopefully I will get sent the spreadsheet of results home. I am itching to know! Hope it is good news.

A's were last year for eldest... next week is GCSE for littleo one... fingers crossed for yours and mine... :-X

Takes me back to how I felt waiting for exam results, stomach churning, hands shaking....... I always reckoned I hated getting the results more than actually sitting the exams ::) Weird I know!

OMG! Had a very stressful morning! Son didn't get quite the results he was hoping for.....his Dad...my ex refusing to fund him if too low. However after phoning and phoning he got into his first Uni choice without even begging!
Still can't quite believe it.

Not sure about something posh and fizzy though....he's lucky again just!
To be fair he has Asperger's Syndrome and hasn't had any help with it at all, not even a lot of understanding from most of the teacher's.....or his Dad in fact.
His Tech project was excellent and we were not worried about that mark at all.....though if he'd done as well in the exam as last year he would have had an A but a B is good. When he started the course he was predicted an 'E'. Just shows you the statistics are not always right.

The 'predictions' are based on the average (mean) performance of the group of students (nationwide) from the year before. They look at their GCSE score and their A level performance. There is a good correlation between GCSE and A level performance, but many factors affect success. I don't think it is unusal for a young person with aspergers to exceed their target grades by a long way. From my experience, and every person is different, kids with aspergers tend to get really good grades in some subjects and not so good grades in other. Their 'average' GCSE score can then end up quite low hence the low target for A level performance. If they can find the subjects they enjoy then at AS they do really well :)
There are VERY VERY few people that achieve a performance at grade B, from a target grade of E. So celebrate hard tonight and look foward to the future

Well done Kea's son & Landimad's son. What a great way to celebrate with a cuppa. My favourite tipple too but mines a rooibosh as I can't have much caffiene either. Big treat tomorrow as we are going to see daughter no2 & she has a built in coffee machine & it makes me the mildest cup of coffee. Lovely, then we will spend the day making cakes for the village do.

Thanks Sparkly for your comments. You are absolutely right about someone with Asperger's, I have always told his teachers to expect the unexpected. But they are so quick to write him off because he doesn't fit that normal curve...he's an outlier in every sense. Einstein supposedly failed maths and it's thought he had Asperger's too.

They have been passed on and he says only 12 more sleeps in this house before he moves to his digs in Cambridge.
That is only for a couple of weeks before he is off to Rum to see in the Rut.

I do envy Landimad the much shorter journey. My other son wants to go to Edinburgh (his birthplace) when he goes to Uni...could they get any further apart!!!!!

Well I've got him there......what a long way that is!
I managed to cope really well until I arrived back to the outskirts of our home town......then i thought about how far it was :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I have to say the moving in bit is a nightmare......up 5 flights of stairs and one small lift and 45 mins time slot for parking the car so waiting for a turn for the lift wasn't an option except for the heaviest items. I woke up this morning in the B&B to find i could hardly walk down the stairs! Worse than the day after Great Gable!
Yes LBK was saying first social thing was an organised Pub crawl :o.....Only a few days before he left he was helping at 'Booze on the Ouse' the annual local CAMRA festival and the first night he was on the Direct line (so to speak) when he got home and saying never again!

Kea, you must be shattered, and it is such an emotional time taking them isn't it, I feel for you. I am taking a friend out tomorrow who has taken her youngest today.
I have one who has been but is now back home, and have been on a uni visit today for the middle one, off next year, but my AS lad is only 15 so a while to go yet.

The youngest wants to go to Edinburgh so that's a similar drive in the opposite direction..... ::)
He's been given a studio flat because of the combination of difficulties with height and Asperger's Syndrome...he actually didn't want to be on his own but the disability people and accommodation officer just decided it would be better. I am still waiting to hear who gets to pay the difference between an ordinary room and a studio flat, the Uni told me it would be covered by the Disability Support Allowance however the assessor for that told me in most cases it's the Uni that has to cover it. I get the feeling it's going to be a pass the buck game with me in the middle ::). Even the cost of an ordinary room is extortionate in my opinion, more than the loan. Then they find ways of milking them for more money...I had a look at the laundry room...£2 to wash and £1 to dry but not necessarily to a point where the clothes are dry and a prohibition on hanging them up to finish in their rooms on a rack......I bet they all follow that rule!
Anyway despite having AS he has gone out and made contact with people, went to Salsa dancing last night taking another guy along who hasn't done any dancing. LBK prefers ballroom to latin though.
Freshers is next week at Plymouth too.

I have lived in Plynouth and can assure you that he does not want to go down Union street for his pub crawl.
That is where the sailors and marines go to enjoy a night out.

Anyway going by the short shift I was given earlier when I IM'd him he's having a great time.

Well he's disappeared off in to the wild blue ether!
To answer the questions over the summer and lacking a job he has built me a gate at each end of my plot; mended the fence; built part of a manure bin and nearly 4 raised beds. He's left the plants to me. But he has eaten his share and gone off to uni with two bulbs of garlic for his stir fry's.

The son has vanished to UNI with the wallet and a good chunk of my tools for the repairs needed on his bike.
I shall have to render him bankrupt as the bank of mum and dad is all out of cash for his freshers week.

Tell him not to develop the bad biking habits of a Cambridge student....nearly been killed by a cyclist everytime I go! Or nearly killed one each time in the car.

He is kinda stuck at the moment due to his chain needing to be tightned.

We're going to be stuck our selves as LBK was the bike repair specialist in our family!
Finally over a week after dropping him at Uni I finally got a phone call 5 mins ago first one since the 1st couple of days when he was a bit lonely. Seems he's made friends with a group of older students with rooms near him......which is good as they won't be as 'mad' as his own age group.
Does your house feel a bit empty, Landimad?

Well he is coming home at the weekend, Obviously the bank of mum and dad has run dry. So I think he will have a go at the wallet and purse strings to see if there is anymore he can filtch from us. ;)

Fortunately mine is too far away to come home....his choice not mine though. This bank of Mum and Dad had to pay out lots of money because there was no sign of the loan arriving...I should say step-Dad...the bank of Dad is the most stingy place on the planet.

Glad mine closer as he has had an accident on his motor bike. :(
Ended up in hospital over night and had a neck brace put on him.
Lots of scrapes and bruising but ok. :)
Now at home for a week, me not happy as I am £300 out of pocket.
Recovery, new helmet, and a new jacket too. >:(
Not to sure about the bike yet, as I need to look at it before he gets back on it.
Three lectures missed and one practical to do. ::)
Still at least he is alive and that we can be thankful for. ;D
I am just waiting for the day my numbers come up on the lottery so as then he will be able to say 'Can I have some of that please'. :-X

Kea, I'm sure your son has got his bearings sorted by now, but if its any reassurance, in my 3 years of University in Plymouth i never had any trouble (and that did involve quiet a few nights out on Union street and living in Devonport in my first year). We very soon got to know which pubs were student friendly and which not so much.
I have to say, i had a fantastic time there, and i'm sure LBK will have too. You'll have to ask him if he's been for a 1/2 yard sausage at Captain Jaspers (on the barbican) or the all day breakfast at Cuba (a bar/cafe near the Uni).

I'm sure he's OK in Plymouth....so far on my brief visits I've really liked the place. It reminds me of Christchurch, NZ...though I can't work out why. It might be all the cabbage trees and phormiums in the street planting!

He is now back at Uni after his accident and yes the loan is now into the four figure.
He has had to get his bike repaired and get food and funding for the lodgings.
He has also had to get a financial loan from the Uni for other things, this is due to Student finance not paying the students their monies when asked for.
Centralising it has been the worst thing that they did for the students.
Hope yours is doing better than mine at present?
I trust with the area he is in that freshers was a great week down there?
They will be looking to the children in need next so that will cost us again.
But that will be a good cause to support.

Well mine has discovered Sainsbury's basic range and has just phoned me to say he's bought 2 weeks food for £6. The Bank would only give him a £500 overdraft for this term and he's eaten that as well...though i suspect some of the original loan was used more for beverage than food!
He only got a loan not a grant so it came through a couple of weeks after the start of term. Unfortunately his Father has given him a pittance and told me to pay the rest out of my other son's child support payments or he won't pay the oldest anything.
I am hoping he will get a summer job this year, in fact I've told him to go and stay with his Dad in the summer as there is more liklihood of a job...or his Dad might pay him to stay away as he doesn't seem to want to help his own kids. A Professor at a prestigious University in a well known Scottish Capital who prefers to spend only on himself! Narcissistic personality.
Yes student finance is a waste of space, we have to deal with them for Disability assistance as well.

My lad is the same but with ASDA, he has been made chief cook and bottle washer for the house he resides in.
Hope to see him at the weekend so he can pick up his bike after all the repairs and MOT which will be added to the bill.
He is seeing the Dean next week to ask if they can start an allotment near to the Uni., so they can get food and study it for part of their course work.
He has done a good thing by requesting this, I hope he gets stuck in as they only do lectures three days a week and the rest is down to them what they do.
He will be off to Donna Nook in December to see the seal population. I think that this is a great way of studying nature in our own country.
In time he will learn to enjoy the wildlife and get a qualification to boot.
Hope that yours will be getting the same from his studies too.
