Title: tomatoes which do not grow in bunches
Post by: campanula on March 11, 2018, 14:51:16
With vast apologies for only posting when I have an urgent question (at least I know where to come), I am really keen to grow cherry tomatoes which grow in a neat paired truss of opposite placed fruits...rather than a bunch. I find picking ripe tomatoes out of a cluster to be infuriating as my clumsy fingers almost invariably pull unripe ones off the stalk in my pursuit of the riper ones. I grow about 60 plants as I make a lot of ketchup and passata so I am always in a bit of a rush.

Anyway, I had high hopes for Chadwick Cherry last year but they turned out to be bunching types while Sungold, which does grow in paired vines, is really far too thin-skinned for my needs. Any suggestions.

I've always used Sungold for passata and Tomato and Chill sauce which sells really well.

Garnet may suit you.
A little darker than most but a nice spread of fruit.

Cheers, Folks,
Yep, GD and Sungold were my obvious thoughts too...but GD grows to Amazon proportions and Sungold has real issues with splitting (I garden in semi-arid East Anglia) so any supplemental water causes immediate bursting out of their skins.
Garnet looks very promising indeed...and I particularly like the spread of fruit for easier picking. Seeds from where?

Suttons (http://www.suttons.co.uk/Gardening/Vegetable+Seeds/Popular+Vegetable+Seeds/Tomato+Seeds/Tomato+Seeds+-+Garnet_182480.htm)

Although I think I got mine from T&M

Edit - the ever brilliant Nickys Nursery (https://www.nickys-nursery.co.uk/product_info.php/tomato-seeds-garnet-seeds-veg804-p-7413) has them and cheaper!
