Hi tracm, i've just flicked through a seed catalogue for my veggies for next year and totalled everything up and guess what :P it's £175 so if you can beat that i would be very happy indeed ;D. I've tried keeping seeds but they just wilt or get fungus on them :-[. Anyone out there know how to keep seeds for next year? :-/

Hiya  :)

£175!  :o

Please tell me what you buy?

Do you have a problem keeping your beans and peas?

Liddl and Aldi do a large range of seeds inc toms for 35-45p per pack.

Wyvale at the end of season do all their seeds at 1/2 price.

Ifn you are with an Association that's part of National then you can get a big discount with Kings and get money back.

Hi
Keeping seeds, collect seeds dry them out somewhere warm and light and airy in a container open lidded and turn daily.
Once dry out put in envelopes paper ones and lable what they are.
These can be put into a tin so mice dont get them till next season.
The key is to dry them out natualy this can take a week or so. My conservoty is ideal.

Hi merv, what do i buy? anything that grows (veggies) as i have quite a big lottie. Some space is taken up with the livestock but there is still quite a bit of ground to dig :P. I'll have to try different shops to see how the prices compare, and hopefully get the seeds cheaper ;D
unfortunately i'm not in an association so will have to depend on people like you to help me out.

Many thanks

Hi jethro  :)

Yuppers you got to keep back seed from year to year.  I find that if I leave the seed to ripen on the plant it has a better chance of germination.

As far as toms are concerned, I just keep back a ripe one from each variety, wait 'til it is real ripe then squish it out onto kitchen paper and dry it off for next year.

Anyone coming back from Spain can bring a tom back and away you go.

This is also a good way to get parsnips to germinate. (in fact any difficult to germinate/see seeds).

Make strips of kitchen paper, moisten and lay in seed trays, lay a seed every 4-6" on the paper strips and germinate at home.

When germinated, lay the paper strips end to end in well prepared soil..and Robert's your Uncle.  :D

I also use the gutter pipe method if mouses are a pest.

Hi ,
as someone who has been in the allotment for a whole 5 weeks now this seed exchange sounds great ,but do the seeds stay true to type ?
seeds still seem a long way ahead in the future still i do dream that one day the digging will stop and i'll plant something for a change
