Title: Wyevale seed sale
Post by: barkingdog on August 18, 2007, 16:33:35
Went to my local Wyevale today and they were taking all the packets of seed down from the display stands and marking them at 50p per packet.

Could this be the Wyevale great sell off? Think I might go back tomorrow  ;D

last week ours had seeds at 50% off but this is a new offer, same as last year except they've made the price 50p instead of 25p  :(

Still very cheap though  ;D

I just put wyevale in the search engine and went straight to their site!

Here is a list of the seeds that I got today. I am not too good on varieties so I probably got some really poor quality ones. Comments welcome on all varieties(please!)

tomato- ruby f1 hybrid
tomato- gardeners delight(seed mat)
tomato- moneymaker(seed mat)
tomato-marmande-beef(seed mat)
runner bean- rotbluhende(the teanie beanie)
beetroot- boltardy(seed tape)
beetroot-chiogga pink
beetroot- solo f1 hybrid
parsnip- tender and true(seed tape)
parsnip- tender and true
pea- jaguar
sweetcorn- f1 swift
sweetcorn-f1 applause
brussel sprout- bedford
carrot- early nantes 5
pepper- summer salad mixed f1 hybrid
pepper-(giant vegetable) jumbo sweet
cucumber- marketmore
broad/fava bean- the sutton
cabbage- f1 poet
cabbage-savoy estoril f1 hybrid
rhubarb- glaskins perpetual
radish- scarlot globe
cauliflower-lateman

As its my first year of growing on my allotment instead of my back garden I have probably gone overboard, but at that price I think I could afford to.

A mere 59 packets, I only gave up looking because my back hurt from bending over rummaging! Lots of 'The Taste of Italy' and 'Eden Project' packets, that has cheered me up after working nights! ;D

It must vary a lot from branch to branch. The only thing I couldn't get was mini sweetcorn and a long parsnip. There were a few varieties I've never heard of but I figure the weather is one of the biggest factors & part of the fun is trying new varieties.

I got 36 packets ... and I'm sure I must have dropped some en route to the till as I've realised that I came away without any peas  ???

The Wyevale I go to has around a third of the seeds it was selling off last year, guess that's why they are not as cheap.

Thanks for the tip off.

I went to Wyevale Newport yesterday. Thousands of packs of seeds! It took me an hour to look through them all, as they were all jumbled up in about 15 of those garden buucket things with handles. I stood out a bit though, as everyone else seemed a bit 'a la posh', all dressed up and buying garden related ornaments.

Anyway, I got £57 of seeds for £13. I picked up a lot more at first, but then forced myself to go through them all and put the least interesting ones back. I still think I have too many!!!Cant wait till next year now.

The Italian seeds seemed good value, as they were huge packs, but one or two I saw were only 50p to start with.

To anyone in Gloucester or surrounding area, the country garden centre by Stonehouse has seeds reduced to 50p a packet. Unfortunately I was unable to resist!!!  ::)

They had 3 big bucket/trugs filled with packets, it wasn't easy to sort through them but I came away with £49 worth of packets for £10.50!!

I think the nice thing about buying like this is that it makes you try a variety that you may not have bought otherwise.

Mum is at her's in Morden as we speak.  She phoned, but her batteries ran out, to check the sort of things I was after.  I told her to use her imagination.  Lots of Italian packs apparently.  She will call me when she gets home.  Our local nursery doesn't sell theirs off special, but for anyone in North Devon, Banstaple, Brian Fords down by the leasure centre usually does and sells them at between 50% and 75% off pack price.  For big packs it can work out cheap cheap.  I pick up anything else I am after in there in October when I am down.

Windy wet weather this afternoon some retail therapy needed............."Kids get your coats on lets go to the garden centre"..... Off I went and the seeds were all in shopping baskets so while the kids played climbing a post (holding up the roof and sorting seeds I was there on the floor sorting out what I really didn't need....but they are a bargin. I'm sure people walking passed thought that there was two children just playing on there own. ;D

Like Norman Tebit's dad, I got on my bike and went in search of seeds today.  Off up to Wyvale.  All I wanted was peas.  Did they have any?  Did they bugger.  Every other sort or seed you could want for 50p but not a pea in sight  :(

Eeeeeeeee! Thought I'd be too late to bag any bargains, but I've just come back from a foraging trip with over £140 worth of seeds for just over 35 quid! Won't bore you with the details but among my favourites are:

Chillies - Apache, Demon Red and Joe's Long,
Sweet Pepper Gypsy - one of Tim's recommendations, I think,
Carrot Samurai - pink carrots!
Sprouts Red Delicious - purple sprouts,
Cabbage Kalibos - red, pointed
Dwarf French Bean Purple Queen - yup! Purple (almost black) pods
Melon Sweetheart
Alpine Strawberry Mignonette
Lemon Grass

The Apache chillies alone were originally £3.50 (for a measly 6 seeds), hence the massive savings - and, as others have mentioned, most packets have an expiry date of 2009, which means I won't have to buy any more seeds till... er...

... next time?  ;D ;D ;D

Mine won't, but there again why change?

Finally succumbed (on the pretext that I needed some more slug pellets and its closer than Wilkos)  Had to walk past the baskets to get to the pellets ((a fiendish ploy - that worked))

No sweetcorn but found some interesting varieties of broad bean, carrot and beetroot that I haven't tried before.

I managed to track down my nearest Wyevale yesterday, 30 mins drive but worth it after reading about all your bargains on here  :).

I walked in through the door and there were a couple of buckets straight in front of me. Hubby and I scoured these and we got a few packets of seed. Further into the store we came across another couple of buckets and got another few packets. I was happy with what I had chosen until we came to the checkout. There in front of me were another ELEVEN buckets. I don't think the other shoppers were too happy walking around us (me, hubby and two kids) whilst we sorted out what we wanted. I didn't even attempt to look at the flower seed  :-\.

All in all we got 19 packets of seed for £9.50. These 19 packets should have cost £41.82 and on top of that we got three packets of Beetroot free ( one packet free with any two packets of Thompson & Morgan seeds).

OK, I know you're all nosey and want to know what I bought so here goes:-

3 x Beetroot chioggia pink (free)
2 X Tomato F1 shirley (one packet for hubby's uncle, he swears by these tomatoes, so thought I would buy a packet for me to try too)
Leek F1 carlton
Cantaloupe Melon F1 early sweet
Broccoli (sprouting) summer purple
Thompson & Morgan Kids Super Seeds Katy Carrot parmex
Aubergine black beauty
Suttons Herb Collection (dill, sage, sweet basil, marjoram, thyme)
Tomato totem F1 hybrid
Turnip snowball
Tomato gartenperle
Gherkin diamant F1 hybrid
Tomato tigerella (mr stripey)
Swiss Chard bright lights
Sweetcorn baby corn
Cucumber F1 burpless tasty green
Onion white lisbon
Iceberg Lettuce set
Rosemary

Now, I don't know if you remember, but I DON'T have a lottie, I grow in containers, so where I am going to grow this little lot, I don't have a clue.

Oh, forgot to say, our Wyevales also has an aquatics part, so we also came away with three Endlers for Hubby's tank  ::).

Jo.

I couldn't keep away any longer!!!
I was not very impressed with the range of seeds that they had, only a few handfuls in a barrel, but I bought
Suttons Savoy cabbage  Ormskirk rearguard (for the chickens, we dont eat cabbage!)
T&M Leek Pandora
Suttons Okra Clemsons spineless (never eaten before, but thought we'd give it a go!)
Suttons Chilli Demon Red (one for dh to grow)
Suttons Mustard x2 White (wondering if I can use this as a green manure, is it the same type of mustard?)
Suttons D french bean Purple Queen (purple is my fav colour, so had to buy them!)
Carrots - Suttons Yellowstone
               Alan Titchmarsh Nantes 2
               Suttons Samurai
               Suttons  Parmex
               Suttons Chantenay red cored 2
Suttons Celery Loretta
Giant Red (never grown celery before, but I use it a lot in cooking, so will save buying from the supermarket!)
Cost - £7. Should have cost £25.19!
