Title: Wood Pigeons
Post by: Wicker on July 03, 2004, 00:34:57
On Friday at the allotment I disturbed a couple of wood pigeons at our swedes and found that they had practically stripped the leaves from two whole rows have never known them to go for turnip greens before even tho they are regulars on the plot.  they are also very blatant and aggressive around the fruit bushes (all now netted) while the brassicas are always netted right away.

Have been told that there is a "shortage" of flying insects (greenfly etc) this year so the birds are having to turn to sources they might not normally bother with.

Swings and roundabouts eh!

Incidentally will the swedes recover from such dmage or should I resow?

Don't know about the swedes, but send the pigeons my way -we've plenty of blackfly &c., not much in the way of ladybirds and the hoverflies are only jusr getting going.

shortage of greenfly? Maybe in your area. They are all in my garden and windowsills! And I have plenty of woodpigeons too.
