Title: Cuttting back magnolia tree
Post by: broad beannie on June 27, 2007, 18:07:08
Hi all, have a superb magnolia tree in my garden that has now finished flowering. Do I cut it back now or wait till the autumn ?

I should also be grateful for suggestions.  We have some magnolias that are getting too large for their sites.

How far can you cut them back?

I should have to say that the trees need very drastic pruning.  Is thiis all right?  How far can I prune back, safely?

I must confess that I I am somewhat surprised that anyone should wish to prune a superb magnolia. These magnificent plants should really only be planted where they can grow unfettered.

However, if needs absolutely must, they may safely be pruned immediately after flowering.

As to drastic pruning - this suggests the removal of comparatively large branches, which can be carried out at the same time, but is best spread out by not removing more than one or two each year.
