Title: What are your hopes and aspirations for the 2009 growing season?
Post by: Sparkly on February 23, 2009, 19:36:00
I am aiming to have our plot fully cultivated without using any weed fabric (except under the pumpkins). I am also hoping for better success with carrots!

To grow more of each vegetable. (except for courgettes) :o Why did I only grow 8 leeks??!!!!! They were tasty though!!

one bonus though, you lift up an edge an reveal all the slugs while you are working there and can scoop them all up or let the birds get them :)

To grow less parsnips... I've still got enough to last till next Christmas, think I over compensated for the dismal failure last year.

Not to go away for the whole six week school holiday only to come home and find all my cabbages looking like dead, needless Christmas trees full of cabbage white caterpillars.

My hope is to be given another 1/2 plot, failing that...plotting vile things against the person responsible for alloting the allotments. ;D ;)

1) I hope we have a nice warm summer, with adequate rain (but only at night)

2) I hope there is a mass emigration of slugs and snails to the park next door.

3) I hope I get around to clearing out my greenhouse which looks more like a shed than my shed does.

4) I hope that all the plotholders on the site get on with each other and a spirit of love and harmony prevails.

Okay, maybe I'll settle for 1 and 3.  :)

With this being our second growing year on the plot we're just hoping to mainly learn from the mistakes of last year... Specifically...

Grow more onions, thought about 100 would have been enough, but nope, almost run out already...

Write down the variety of the spuds we grow so we don't end up stood at the Potato Day next year wondering which were the lovely ones we grew last year.

Get round to sowing the root veg rather than just talking about it.

Grow less courgettes, never again will we grow six plants.

Not go on holiday slap bang in the middle of August

Use black fabric rather than wood chippings for the paths. It may look nice but it's a bugger to keep weed free when it's not thick enough.

Dismantle and re-build the rickety fruit tunnell we inherited with the plot.

Build the 'seating' area complete with bench and flower tubs I promised myself when we took the plot on.

:)

That it doesn't keep raining on my only day off.  That all the plots are rented out to people who give it more than lip service.  And the thieving git from last year breaks a leg if they come on the lottie this year.  ;D ;D
The time and energy to plant and build all on my wish list.  That him indoors gets the gardening bug (OK that might one wish to far).
                     Have a nice day  :) ;) :D ;D

1) repair my dilapidated greenhouse and USE IT!

2) get a much better fruit crop than last year, with the help of my new fruit cage

3) grow bigger and better leeks and brussels sprouts

4) have enough spuds, onions and garlic to last all year round

P.S. I see I've made it to Hectare.  Amazing!

The weather to be back to normal; i.e.

its cold when you would expect it to be,

its hot when you would expect it to be,

it rains when you want it and

it is sunny when you want it.

Wishful thinking do you think  ??? ::) ::) ::) ::)

To be able to grow outdoor toms again. To get a decent honey crop, requeen two beehives, and produce splits for two that died out. Apart from that, to carry on as normal, and get a bit more ground under cultivation.

And when you get to the checkout, listening to the people behind you whispering to each other "Wow, look at all that meat, don't these people feed their children any vegetables?"

And the answer to that as we all know is very, very sweet... "Yes, but we let them sow it, grow it and dig it up themselves".

We have made every effort to keep the dreaded leek moth of the onions and garlic this year.I just hope that it works so that we can get some edible ones. We also look forward to the first full year that we will be able to spend as much time as we want at the allotment without having to get home to look after me mom. So pleased that she has settled in her care home. We are planning to get most of the harvest in before November this year so that when we return after our 3 weeks in Tunisia we shouldn't have too much to do.

To enjoy being at the allotment, get all the last bits of couch grass out, and to make the follwing breakthroughs ....

1)  Manage to grow at least one parsnip!  (ruddy things!!)
2)  Eat some of the salad leaves before they bolt!
3)  Have a first attempt at growing cauliflowers and celeriac
4)  Grow more flowers for picking and fill the house with them!

Best of luck to you all - hope we get the weather right Tee Gee!

I see an article on TV no too long ago about Allotment Squating. People go around finding disused plots and then they just calmly start cultivating them and acting as if they've been allocated them. It was surprising the amount of people that get away with it.

Also the people who go out in the dead of night and plant up all the council beds with veg.

2 - Grow lots of veg and fruit
3 - Get to eat it before nature does.

It is very tempting to just go down there and start work on one of the overgrown plots...and if our council had any 'beds' I might try a spot of guerilla gardening...but they can't even cut grass properly so we don't have any  ::)...there is a nice area over the road from me that could probably have some veg sowed in it's 'borders' (bits the mower can't get to basically)...but don't fancy having to wash my boots every time I go over there as the whole area is literally covered in dog poo  >:(

But, I've decided that as they aren't playing fair they need showing up for the despots they are. I know I'm not the only one who's been badly treated over the last few years & if they are allowed to get away with it then they'll just carry on. Quite frankly I shall just carry on until they get fed up of me  ;D
