Title: Pumpkins are taking over the whole allotment!!!
Post by: lisaparkin on July 02, 2011, 09:23:43
I grew some Jack o Lantern Pumpkins last year, the plants did'nt grow very big and I had a couple of pumpkins not even as big as footballs.......

.....this year I put in some Hundred Weight (I think they were called) seeds and the 4 plants are taking over!  I'm sure they are growing a foot a day!! :o :o

They all have lots of fruits on and I don't really know what to do now :-\

Should I break off some of the fruits, if so which ones?
Can I stop them getting any bigger if I cut the stem/vine off at the end?

if youre wanting loads of fruits let it go wild but if you want a big fruit the cull all of the fruits apart from  the best  you can end the vines when ever you want  be it the main or secondaries  remove all third stage growth as soon as you see it developing third stage is the vine coming off the secondaries buty all vines at the leaf nodes to develope a much bigger root mass as each leaf node will send out a tap root this helps the plant anchor itself down and also feeds the developing fruit  hope this helps regards mal

A plot that is over run with pumpkins and squash is a good plot indeed.  This year and every year I lose a few labels off my plants and will just have to wait and see what they are  ;)

I was just thinking the same!  My atlantic giant is over 13' and rampant but that was in a tunnel for ages.  My other squash are only just starting to vine and will not reach the same size as yours for another month at least.

Glad yours are doing great!

Amazing what a difference the local climate can make.

Had a peer through a fence at another well sheltered site, and I could see very rampant squash, while mine have only started to really get going in the last week or so.

I sowed an Atlantic giant this year and it has run away down the path! It already has at least 2 small fruit on it. The Turk's Turban next to it already has one fair sized fruit (with the distinctive shape and it's already about 20cm wide!) and has others forming. It will be a great squash year (There are others trailing around the compost box!!)
I grew them this year by direct sowing, under cloche, and the soil was manured and also had 2 boxes full of kitchen scraps buried underground a few weeks before sowing. Obviously they love this!! (note to self for next year).

Our squash seems to be taking forever to get amove on. The sunshine are just about waking up but the others althogh on beds of manure are still just sitting there. Perhaps this drop of rain will wake the b*****rs up

and finally under the canopy  all im keeping is male flowers and  leaves no third stage growth

keeping it nice and tidy sure pays off in the end  the plant is much more open

Taken 6/7/11, not as neat and tidy as yours Slyfox, but they seem to be growing ok.  These 2 fruit are a little larger than tennis balls now.

We've not  been to the allotment since last Wed evening as we have been away, got home yesterday, went to the allotment tonight and I could not beleive how much the pumpkins have grown (and how many runner beans and cougettes had grown)

These are the 5 biggest ones.......
