Title: suprise seed cost
Post by: lezelle on February 14, 2020, 09:29:13
Hi Ya, I saw some orange tomato seeds in the local garden centre and thought I will have a goo at them, something different, I looked at the packet but when I turned it over the cost was £3.99. Ok I though but then saw that it was for only 4 seeds. Needless to say they stayed on the rack. Anyone grown any of these tommies and  were they ok? Can you save the seeds?. Be interesting to find out if anyone else has had a go.

I had a go at a variety called "Orange Queen" a couple of years ago.  They were nothing special - and the seeds were being given away FOC if you purchased a couple of other varieties.  I still have two or three packets left as I did not bother again.    I've had some very good varieties from Premier seeds this year.  Germination was very good and I am very curious to see how "old German" and Giant Tree" turn out.  Otherwise I tend to grow Italian style tomatoes mainly.

I have several "orange" tomatoes.. and save my own seed. The price implies they are hybrids and won't come true. Have no time with £4 / 4 seed packets of tomatoes or cucumber... I've grown Giant Tree and it was fine... if tall! Didn't make it onto the "regular" list.

I have grown 3 orange tomatoes here - one marmande/beef type, one called Ananas which translates as pineapple and I can't remember the other one.   All had good flavour and also look good in salads and tarts and make good passata for bottling.

I've given up sowing seeds for the mo as I don't know what will do well here so I've been buying babies form a chap who comes with about 100 varieties to a local plant fair in March/April.   Still plenty more to try.

What were they called?
I have grown orange toms but some were F1 and some were heritage.  Obviously Sungold and its relatives won't come true but I think Organge Banana would..

My chappy doesn't do F1, just heritage.

He also says he can't claim organic cos it costs too much for the accreditation but he uses organic seeds, organic composts and grows his tomato babies in an unheated greenhouse with classical music on in daylight hours.   Have to admit it is a tad warmer here, usually, than the UK and spring arrives earlier so maybe a bit of heat needed your way.

Quite right BNick Orange Banana is not hybrid and comes true from seeds.

Without a name Lez we would just be guessing, sorry can't help.  But if I considered spending that much I would make very sure it was worth the cost, like absolutely blight resistant or something like that.  Otherwise why bother, there are so many good tomato varieties that cost much less.  Looks like somebody priced this one just below the price of a plant!

Hi All, Interesting to hear from you all. The variety I saw was called orange beauty. It is an F1  and I may of considered it if it was a heritage one. Even with the so called testing it is still expensive to me. There was others with 8 seeds. I will wait and have a look when they sell them off at the end of the season. It just caught my eye  and looked good. Take care all in this stormy weather.Cheers
