Title: A4A get-together 2014
Post by: Squash64 on April 23, 2014, 09:21:55
Would anyone be up for another meeting this year?

We had such a good time last year and I would love to do it again.

You are more than welcome to come here to Birmingham for it, or somewhere
else if people prefer.

Unfortunately we can only press the 'Like' button once.  So yes, please Squash - Like, Like and Like.  We had such a lovely time last year - thank you for offering to have us again

:icon_cheers:    I would love another get together like last year, Betty.  It was a lovely day and so good to meet you and everyone else.

What dates have you in mind, Betty?

John and I have already made arrangements to visit our elderly friend again who lives at Walmsley near Walsall and have already booked caravan sites at Birmingham and Shatterford near Bewdley.  Both are within travelling distance of Walsall Road Allotments.  We will be coming up on 14th July and returning 22nd July.  We may be able to extend or alter these dates if necessary, but at the end of the day, it is really up to you Betty to set a date that is convenient for you.

Sounds a great idea

But 19th July is the first day of the school holidays for many so the traffic may be horrendous.

The proposed date is exactly one year on from last year!

Most schools break up the following week.  The last day of term for my grandchildren in Hampshire is Wednesday 23rd, the same as London.  It varies from County to County, so I don't think the traffic will be as bad as it is before the Spring Bank Holiday when school children throughout the country break up on the same day.

I'm so glad that many of last year's group are coming again.  I have a terrible
memory for faces so I'll have to study the photos to remind myself who you are!

I think we are fairly easy to find.  There is a map on our home page www.growit.btck.co.uk
but please ask me if it doesn't help.  Many people manage to find their way to Church
Road but then miss the turning to the allotments!   Maybe I could fix a bunch of balloons
to the beginning of the drive. One year I put a scarecrow there and it got nicked!

Shall we all bring something to share for lunch?  Last year's was really special.
We will provide hot and cold drinks.

For those who haven't been before, you can drive onto the site and park near where
will will meet.  We have toilets, a kitchen and lots of indoor space in case of bad
weather.  I might put a couple of gazebos up this year. The roadways are in fairly
good condition so are suitable for wheelchairs.

Last year we had lovely plants and packets of seeds to help ourselves to and we
could do the same again this time if you want to.

I'm really looking forward to it.

Definitely Betty!  Last year's lunch was excellent.  It is very kind of you to provide hot and cold drinks.

Do you still have the name tags?  I think we handed them back.

Same here - I was wondering where it had got to, but just this week up it popped.  Lovely (but still very thin) asparagus shoots.  Thanks Squash

And the kales - well they have exploded into a mass of spring growth.  This weather was made for them it seems.  Have just harvested yet another meal.

Grateful thoughts are being sent often.

This is a very cheeky request, but is there anyone driving from anywhere near Chesterfield that has a spare space in their car? I'd love to go but can't really afford public transport, unfortunately.

Thanks for the 'bump' Pauline  :happy7:

I'm really looking forward to seeing fellow A4A'ers - those who came
last year and first-timers this year.

If you haven't been before, I think we are quite easy to find.  There should
be some big signs up by the time of our meeting because our Summer Fayre
will be on 2nd August and hopefully the signs will have gone up.  There is a
map on the home page of our website www.growit.btck.co.uk.

Last year we had a shared lunch, and people brought some amazing
food.  But don't worry if you can't bring anything home-made, everything
will be appreciated (and scoffed!)

We have a kitchen and will provide tea/coffee/cold drinks.  There is lots
of under cover shelter in case of bad weather.  You can drive on to the site
and park near where we will be meeting.  There are disabled facilities.

I did make badges for everyone last year but I can't remember where I
saved them!  Would you all be able to make your own?  Even if it's a sticky
label type of badge it would still be helpful, with your 'real' name and A4A
name on.

I have a slight problem this year in that my husband will be away in Sicily
which means that because of my very elderly dogs I can't be at the allotments
until 12 noon.  Shall we say that we aim for about 12:15 to 12:30?  I can't
remember what time we had it last year.

I have the same mobile number as last year but if you don't have it, please
pm me.

Not long to go now...... :blob7:

Looking forward to meeting you too, Silverleaf.

Last March I was diagnosed with diabetes type2 so have to follow a low carb diet.  However, I allow myself a treat every month and lemon drizzle cake is by far my favourite, but any sort of cake would go down well.

I thought I might bring a Greek salad this year and a few egg mayonaise sandwiches.   I made far too many sandwiches last year and had to throw half of them away.

Oh I don't know what he is doing...first he wasn't coming...then I said, "ok I'll drive there and we are going to be able to have more 'girly' chat and time then..and I'm not in hurry to come back for the dog..." Then he started to 'umm and arrr'....and was thinking of all the nice foor....and he asked if Melbourne is coming this year (he is still drooling over that pie...), when I said "nope, he haven't mentioned"...it was 'umm and arrr' again...

So now I take it that he won't decide until the day we go...

I am trying to plan it.  Please choose the weekend of the Fairford Airshow next time.

I am planning to come part of the way by car, part by train and part by bus, so then I will not have to go via Alridge from which there is no way out.  Does anyone have any experience of Barnt Green station?  Is it a safe place to leave a car?

The bus X51 seems to be the best option can I use my bus pass.  It is very confusing because you cannot on the X50 which is a national express.

They say it is a 15 minute walk from New street to bull street but with a huge Primark on route I am not convinced.  Crazy why don't the buses go from the Station.

....I am planning to come part of the way by car, part by train and part by bus, so then I will not have to go via Alridge from which there is no way out.

I thought you lived in the Cotswolds, Digeroo.  If so why did you go as far north as Aldridge last time when the allotments are at Perry Barr?   According to the AA Routemaster, Barnt Station is only 14 miles from Walsall Allotments.  You could be there in the time it takes to wait for a train or bus!  Have you got a sat nav, Digeroo?

The roads around Birmingham seem very straight forward.  We stayed to the south of the City at the Caravan Club site last year and had no difficulties getting there.  Traffic wasn't too bad at all around Birmingham compared with where we live just off the A303, where a five mile journey back from Tesco in Amesbury can take over an hour.

Just to confirm that John and I will be at the get-together.

Title: Re: A4A get-together 2014
Post by: Digeroo on July 01, 2014, 11:39:11
Last time I went to Wednesbury to look at a car with a ramp.  I carefully noted the route from Google except I then got send off on a diversion and then another one and finally I ended up in Aldridge.  Could not find my map.  In the end I found a nice policeman who was very amused and put me back on the right road.  I had spent ages crawling round the diversion routes.

I do not have a satnav.  A friend has an app on her phone which was very good so I might get a snazzy phone except I would be worried about losing it.

The other problem is that the 14 miles would normally include a few tunnels and they are being closed that day for months.  More diversions.  Even more chance of ending up going round in circles again and ending up in you know where.

Oh dear.....I'm having to post pre-warning that I might not be able to attend after all...

Little while ago I filled dog adoption form..and now we have been given notice that we might be having little girl heading to our way..
The charity gave us a date that that we would need be able to go and pick her up..which is to be confirmed from their behalf next few days...and if it all goes ahead as planned..it will fall for the same date than our meeting... :BangHead:

So...Pumkinlover and Silverleaf..I might have to turn our arrangement down...!!! SOOOO sorry about it already..

BUT...I shall let you know when they get back to me in early this week.
And if/when it all goes through...I shall let you know about our possible new arrival...oh yes...plenty of photos, no doubt about it!  :tongue3: :icon_cheers:

I'm a slightly more firmed up maybe as something I thought I might have to get back for is not clashing (I thought it was possible and needed to look at when I'd be getting back).... what makes it more likely is that I might be buying something in the area (a few miles away) for my lighting rig, and a perfectly reasonable way to go about it might be to  catch the early coach to Birmingham, pick up the bits which are just around the corner from the coach station, then head over to Wallsall Road on the bus which leaves from Snow Hill station... My bits of fiddling around in town are within a mile of each other.... if I don't get the bits (ebay auction) then I've been offered a lift by someone fairly local anyway...

This is terribly short notice, because we thought at first we wouldn't be able to make the date, but now we can.  We very much enjoyed it last year, and we're looking forward to seeing you all again and perhaps meeting some others!

So we'll be there.  We have some seeds to bring along again this year, although not quite as many as last year.

See you all there!

Glad to hear that Chriscross might be coming and that Melbourne and Mrs M are definite.
Really sorry though that Goodlife and Caroline might not come but I do understand their
reasons.  We'll just hope for the best that they can come.

I will be at the gate from 12:15 to meet you but please don't be offended if I don't
recognize some of you!  My memory for faces is awful and I can't even blame it on
old age because I've always been like that.

I'll have the kettle on for when you arrive and then we can decide what to do - either
have something to eat first, or a walk around the allotments or just sit and chat.

I will have some plants for swapping, not sure what just yet because I've been away from
home for a few days but hopefully they have survived being looked after by my husband.

I'll make a cake, and I think someone has mentioned lemon drizzle cake - I LOVE LEMON
DRIZZLE CAKE - but I can't make it!

If anyone would like my mobile number pleas pm me.

So this is the up to date list:-

Digeroo
Pauline and John
Pumpkinlover
?  Goodlife
Silverleaf
Cambourne
Ellen K
Galina
? Caroline
Lottie Lou
Chriscross (hopefully)
Melbourne12 and Mrs M

I have no idea what to bring :) sounds like cakes are sorted thanks to silverleaf

There will be me, Hubbie Paul and Harriet of course who is very keen on looking at the gardens.

What would you like me to bring?? Husband has perfected a killer bean salad recipe which we can bring along with a loaf of parmagan and sundried tomato bread?

Bean salad sounds very nice Cam,

Betty

Ok... as it stands now, we are not coming, our promised doggie has had her operation and recovering well, she should be ok for new home soon. So...sorry girls.....I know you were relying having lift from us to the meeting.
I was truly looking forward to the Saturday date...I do now too but different reasons...

I am sorry you won't be there Goodlife but wish you well with your new dog.

I hope the others that were coming with you will still be able to make it.

I have more than enough disposable plates to bring with me but haven't any cutlery apart from the few bits we have in the caravan.  I looked in Sainsbury today to see if they sold any plastic knives, forks and spoons but they didn't have any.  I can't remember what we did last year.  Maybe we all brought our own!

I was thinking, if anyone wants to ask me genetics questions, I'll be happy to answer them if I can! Pea genetics is my area really but I can help with basic generic stuff as well.

I might have a few seeds to swap, but only a few. Also got a few baby aloe vera plants I can pot up if anyone would like one...

Well, we are up in the area already.  We had a trip to Birmingham Botanical Gardens today.  It has a lot of potential but we felt it had seen better days!  A lot of the beds were really scruffy.  There were notices about saying that improvements were being made but the notices looked about ten years old.

The rose garden was a disappointment.  There was no attempt at making it flow.  If I was in charge there I would sell all those awful sculptures and use the money to buy some trellises, pergolas and arches.  I would put in some structures for climbers such as clematis, to entwine their way around.  At the moment, each bed has about 20 roses in it, all the same colour and type (probably hybrid Tea) and about 6ft apart.  There was little variation of colour, no variety of styles and no perfume filling the air.  When I saw the sign to the rose garden, I was expecting to see something like the one at Mottisfont near Romsey in Hampshire.

One of the best things about our visit was just how friendly the other people visiting the gardens were. They were chatty and very pleasant.  The cafeteria staff were very friendly too and I thoroughly enjoyed their lemon drizzle cake and medium cappuccino which came in a ginormous cup!

See you on Saturday folks!

Now don't tempt me, Cam.  The one on David Austin's website is what a rose garden should look like.  We intended a day out to Bridgnorth whilst in the area so may have to think about going to Albrighton now.

I have already broken my promise to John not to buy any more plants until I have planted all those still in pots at home.  Today I bought two scabiosa (one white and one blue), a perennial cornflower and a beautiful blue penstemon.  Yesterday I bought a white pink.  Now I have planted all my vegetables, I can start on my new garden at the back of the summerhouse when we get home.  It will be full of white, blue and yellow flowers, have paving stones and shingle, a wooden bench against the summerhouse and hopefully, a three tiered water feature in the middle which my family may club together and buy me for my 70th next month.

Excellent.  Looking at the uk.weather.com hourly forecast, we may get a bit of a break from the thundershowers from about midday to 3 o'clock.

Big thank you to everyone for a great day.

Weather something of a problem.  Did not get lost but did get caught in the monsoon on the M42.  Bit of a nightmare,  I think I prefer Aldridge after all.

Lovely drive home in the sunshine, and nice to find my raspberries had been watered, the autumn ones were desperately in need first rain for more than two weeks.

It was a brilliant day, despite the weather. Thanks Betty for hosting and to M12 for chauffeuring myself and Silver leaf. I hope that you and Mrs M12 got home safely after your massive drive. Thank you to the people who brought seeds and the Daubenton as I lost mine last year (my fault) and the food was excellent.  :toothy10:

meet two new ones, Chriscross and Silverleaf

There was an amazing amount of food, and I had my first-ever samosa! The rain
didn't put anyone off coming, thank goodness, and it even stopped long enough
for us to have a walk around the site.

Cam asked if we could have it at Walsall Rd again next year and that is fine
by me, I am so pleased that people like coming to us.
