Title: Please can we do something to remember Supersprout?
Post by: Tulipa on March 01, 2007, 15:55:27
I have been thinking about Sarah for days and especially today, and I just wondered if we could do something to remember her.  She has touched so many lives here and really made her mark.

I am not very good at decisions so will leave it all to you out there but I thought of something, perhaps a shrub/rose/bed full of veggies mulched with straw we could all send donations for to the hospice.

Or maybe people just want to do something individually, I will leave it to you.

The lady who is going to fundraise for her local hospice is a wonderful idea too, maybe that is the way to go.  I am interested in what you think.

Or maybe even just collect all her posts together and make a page in the Wiki for them so we don't loose them and call it Supersprout's page.  Would someone be able to do that?

She was such a lovely lady and it would be nice for Will to see us remember her.

Sarah we shall miss you so much. xxx

Great thought!

I think that it would be great to have a Supersprout page on the Wiki, also how about a thread for most improved plot (voted for by looking at pics) and award an annual Supersprout Virtual Cup?

The Supersprout page would be lovely.

It might also be a place where we could keep her recipes and advice easily to hand for us and for other future allotment holders who will never have the luck of knowing her or of being able to post a query headed "Supersprout -- HELP!!" knowing she would be there with a comforting answer.

Katynewbie's ideas are both wonderful too. Most improved plot: brilliant.

Sprouty very kindly gave me lots of squash seeds last year. I grew them and saved most of them for seed for this year. Japanese dumplings, Winter Squash and Futusu. Had some Triamble seeds as well but they didn't take ... but I've got a few left to try again.

I haven't dried them out yet, but if anyone wants a selection to grow and is interested in the 'Sprouty Seed Squash Club' I think she'd like the idea.

PM me with your address if you're interested and I'll send them on.

Trixie X

I think its a lovely idea to have a section in memory of Supersprout. I didn't know her for very long but she has left me with so many things to remember her by. She sent me some broad bean seeds to finish my row off. Also some squash and even sent the grandkids some sweetcorn. It would be lovely if we could have somewhere to show the results of her love and her generosity by posting some pics of the produce

I have been thinking about how we could remember Sarah on A4A since I read the sad news; I think the ideas here are really good particuarly collecting together all her posts for the wiki.  I also thought we could have a sticky thread where we collected together our memories of her acts of kindness or humour which we could all add to.

On a personal note I can't believe how bad I feel about the loss of someone I never met - I think that shows just what a very special person she was - touching so many of us in so many ways.

I guess I am one of the very lucky ones, having met Sarah when we exchanged a waterbutt and a Compost bin for some enviromesh, poultry magazines and leeklets! (Only on A4A!!!!!), we had a trip out to Barnsdale gardens together where we both met OliveOil (Emma), and not only had a great day out, made a new friend, but chatted non-stop for the journeys both there and back!!
I have to say that this 9 months or so since I met Sarah has been rewarding in so many ways - I suffer slightly from agoraphobia, as well as depression and anxiety, and would not have been able to go to an event such as Barnsdale without a friendly face with me. I am also lucky enough to have met Will, when I popped in for a cup of tea one day, Sarah had talked of him at various points, and I know she would be very proud of the strength and friendship he has shown to her A4A friends in announcing his sad news.
I am certainly in favour of some kind of rememberence for SS, and particuarly love the idea of a "virtual cup" maybe awarded to a newbie every year who has followed some of Sarah's methods?

I think it would be fitting for us to send flowers to the funeral from all of us.  I would be happy to arrange this unless someone else would like to.

My best friends daughter recently died and it was lovely seeing flowers from her 'forum' friends.

I think the wiki page and the virtual cup are excellent ideas.

I've been searching on Supersprout threads for days now, just reading her advice to feel a bit closer to her.

I was going to pop a cheque in the post tomorrow for Will to do with as he thinks best.  The OH suggested setting up a paypal account but I don't know if they would waive their fees on an occasion as sad as this.

My JAs and Pineapple tomatoes are in and they'll be so cossetted and looked after like they're my first borns !  I think Sarah has provided half of the UK with JAs lol.  I'm so glad we've got something tangible to remember her by as well as lots of lovely memories.

This whole tinternet thing has got to us all.  We're all members of one big family, and to lose someone as huge as Sarah, bl**dy well hurts !

Trixiebelle, I'd love to take you up on your offer and will pm you with my details.

Hugs all round, especially to Will.  You're Mum was some woman and I'll remember her fondly.

I´m so sad! what a special person she was.
OliveOil What a good idea about sending some flowers to the funeral, how about getting in touch with a florist in the area and we can all ring up and make a contribution with our credit card, also a good idea about sending money to Will, he could choose a suitable memorial...... whatever we all decide I´m in
Title: Re: Please can we do something to remember Supersprout?
Post by: OliveOil on March 01, 2007, 18:30:50
Hi Biscombe I was going to wait until the details come through about the funeral directors.  The only problem i see with sending direct to florist is that it would be good for us to set a limit and then send the remainder to the hospice from us all if you see what i mean.  I know that is what happened with my friend.

I'm sure we can all decide on something and decide on the person to arrange everything too... I was just offering but don't want to step on anyone's toes.

Sarah was a unique woman, and I'm sure we will pay tribute in many many ways.

My Father-in-law Jack (who I share my allotment with)  had a 'quiet word' with me the other day about his funeral. He said to me ..

"Trixie ... if I keel over in the allotment just dig a hole and put me in it"

Not very fair really, he needs to dig his OWN hole! I've got ENOUGH to do!

But he did say he didn't want flowers on his coffin - just a few potatoes, leeks and tomatoes.

I reckon Sprouty would appreciate that  :) HUNDREDS of pumpkins!

OliveOil and Biscombe I would like to contribute too,  I had wondered about flowers and then we could ask the hospice to keep any A4all money together and see how much we manage to raise for them?

Trixie, yes, I have 2 butternuts and about 10 harlequins I could send!

Olive, and a seed tray of peasprouts...

I would like to see a SuperSprout Virtual Cup for the Most Improved Lottie awarded annually by vote (with or without the benefit of straw mulch ::)). I think that just at present the existing members of Lotties4 will comprehend and embrace this as a Memorial to SS but that over the years future members  also will be able to enter their pictures to 'win' a Virtual Trophy in memory of a Past Member, a Craftswoman in the art of creating a little Eden out of a wilderness. I think that this would be easy for Dan to administer(?) as an on-going year-on-year event?

Could we have a Supersprout Super Swap with all the seeds that she has sent out to us all - if we keep some back and swapped on the 1st March each year as a remembrance

Just a thought as she sent me seeds and I know she sent many more to others ????

Please include me in anything you do,the seeds she sent me just popped up today and it feels quite weird looking at them.Tulipa, are you talking about sending real squash, it is not the best time of the year but I do have several delikata squash that are still ok in storage and  perhaps a couple of Kuri I think,I am happy to post them anywhere.
Another idea would be to inscribe  her name on  developing pumpkins or large squashes, by harvest time the name  will be very big and prominent and a different colour to the rest of  the rind, perhaps then we could make a squash page of pictures for her. I can send pictures of how it looks finished now  and how to do it  if anyone is not familiar with this. It's pretty cool!I used to do it with my kids.
Please let me know.

I like the idea of us all being able to contribute to some flowers, up to a certain budget, with the remainder of money going to the hospice?

I love the idea of the supersprout seed swap on March 1st each year - a very fitting way to keep her memory alive in all of our gardens/allotments.  A virtual cup competition for most improved lottie that everyone could vote on is a top idea too.

I would like to support all of the suggestions in anyway I can. Thank you Trixie for suggesting the squash seeds, it would be a privilege to plant a special squash bed in Sarah's honour. Will keep my eyes open for when contributions are needed for flowers or donation to the hospice. I love the idea of a Supersprout seed swap each year.... a lovely idea!

Or we could arrange for a nice fruit tree to be planted somewhere for her - maybe the hospice or on her allotment site if they have a garden area?

I have just planted three apple trees and will remember her as they grow and fruit in years to come - and of course i'll mulch mulch and mulch some more!

God bless!

There are some lovely ideas on this thread. Remembering dear Supersprout is easy for me. Some time ago I promised to send her some red cyclamen seedlings. For a variety of reasons I didn't get round to doing it but every time I ambled past them in my garden, I thought of them as 'Supersprout's cyclamen'. They wont be going anywhere now but they will always be 'Supersprout's cyclamen'.

I like the idea of the virtual cup. Really lovely idea that.

When I was thinking about how we could remember Sarah I thought it would be nice if we all picked a post,a phrase,a tip or a picture that she posted and said why we liked it.  No matter if the same thing gets picked time and time again.

I thought of that because whenever I think of Sarah, in my mind I see the picture of pumpkins and squashes on the stairs  ;D

I recall her using the phrase 'strangers on a train' when referring to exchanges on the 'net'. For me, this encapsulates the warmth, however fleeting, that we get in dialogue with people that we may never actually get to know or meet.

This reminds me of when she was telling me about meeting a supermarket buyer on a train and having in depth discussions with him about what supermarkets look for in their veg... far from being taste, they bought on evaporation and oxidisation rates... which goes to show what a friendly vivascious character she was - making friends with a stranger on a train.

Been away from the forum for a few weeks and now discover this truly awful news about SS. Terrible shock to all, not least her family.  Sincere condolences.

It was because of SS that I am moving over to mulching and feel in greater control of the plot.  The plot seems less full of weed-fighting prospects and with an increased level of plant/harvest instead!

Like Emaggie - seeing all that straw will remind me of her.

So much straw and don`t forget the pony poo :)

The service was very moving, Sarah was in a wicker coffin decked with flowers. Hymns were `All things bright and beautiful`and `We plough the fields and scatter`.

We lunched on some of Sarah`s produce and Will was genuinely touched by all the posts and thoughts you have all expressed.

A wicker coffin with flowers strewn over. How beautiful. How fitting the hymns too. It really must have been very moving. The grandkids are too small to know about Sarah but they will be planting the sweetcorn she sent them soon. I will keep a photograph record of it and then they will know when they get bigger all about the lady who loved straw.

Yes, it was a lovely service, as much as a funeral can be. I never met Sarah but she had obviously touched a lot of people's lives. The A4A "wreath" was wonderful- straw, sprouts, carrots, girl thingy willow and flowers. And it was nice to meet a few members, however briefly- hope you all got home safely.

I was working, and at 11am I put down my spade, looked up to the blue sky, and the only clouds I could see looked like a smiling face...you know, 2 eyes, splodge for a nose and a sweep for a smiling mouth.  I smiled back up and wished Sarah a safe journey wherever she may go.  I still can't believe she has gone....even though we knew it was inevitable.  She is the only message I have in my pm folder and she will stay there.  :'(

I sadly missed the service in York as we had printed a map off the net which directed  us to the wrong place, instead of the name of the church it took us to a street of the same name,by the time we realised the error and had checked out the adjacent church which was not the one and found out it was way accross the other side of the town, and we got a map and some help etc we arrived just as the car was leaving to  take Sarah to the cemetary, so we missed the whole service. We followed the car  and managed to see the beautiful wicker coffin, we waited in the car rather than intrude  then went back to the wake with them.We met some super good people and learned much more about Sarah from relatives. Much as I was very embarrased to be late  and not sure what to do next almost went home without seeing anyone,I am glad  now we carried on.

Jeannine, what a shame you missed the service, but it would have been worse not to join in later, I am so glad you did after making the journey.

I am glad it all went so well, thank you for telling us about it.  And  a big thank you too Olive Oil for arranging for the flowers from us all.

I went outside in the garden and sat and thought about Sarah.  Very briefly the sun popped out just about 11 o'clock, I thought it must be for Sarah! :)

I came in and copied and pasted from her postings different bits and pieces of gardening knowledge that I never want to loose and printed it off.  It was sad reading through her postings now but I have her instructions for pea sprouts, some information on squashes that prompted me to order Buttercup which I shall remember her when I plant them, and a few other bits and pieces.  Thank you Sarah.  Re-reading her posts reminds you of what a special lady she was and how lucky we were she joined A4all. :)

I went outside work at 11am and had a good old think about Sarah and all the friends I have made the same way as I "made friends" with Supersprout !

I too shall be trawling for her posts and printing off her advice.

Straw mulching is the future, Supersprout saw it and we shall follow.

Adios Sarah.  Please smile on us this summer as we will all still think about you every time pea sprouts, mulch and JAs are mentioned.

Just to let you all know...Will had made some food with things from Sarah's plot. A fitting tribute!

Her sister told me how much she was moved by reading the posts on here.

She will be missed by people all over, in so many different fields.

I will never forget her, for sure, not many people can inspire such love and leave a legacy of so much straw!!

Service sounded lovely... I wish I had been there but work was so manic (worse than usual)... I did stop at 11am and think about Supersprout and then on with the mayhem.

I haven't had a photograph of the tribute from the florist yet and apparently I sent the wording for the card too late - typical.  I really hope everything was ok on the tribute side.

And I am equally sad not to have been able to be there with you too.

Many of you will know I am also a member of other forums ... and we too sent cards and flowers.

Looking forward ...  I think the greatest tribute that ANY of us can make to Sarah ... is to put into practice all the advice and expertise she so very generously gave so freely.

If we continue to practice what she taught us, that knowledge will not just be cherished ... it will grow and flourish ... as she would have wished it.

Peace Be With You Sarah - Flo x

But it`s her love of networking that makes me think-if we could try and meet each other now and again-not under the sad circumstances some of us met-but with `jeans and wellies`and a smile in our hearts-that would be a fitting tribute?

This is a bit garbled as it is floating around in my head. Just a thought to remember her.

Something like...  produce ...

An assortment of squash seeds, perhaps 5 of 10 different kinds. , prettily packed with growing instructions. They would have to be bought in bulk, not home saved, I know where to get them.

With permission from Will of course.

Something like ..."    a nice title in here "  eg ??SUPERSPROUT SQUASH SELECTION

                          In the memory of Supersprout

no personal details but a few words about a super lady

All proceeds to be donated to ?? Hospice or Cancer Society

Sold through  gardening  sites or e bay International. They have a charity section

That is where my mind is rambling,,,any thoughts.

I would have a go with someone helping so that it was all seen to be above board.

Maybe someone artistic could design the seed packet cover.

I think this might well take off.

Just a quick thought to add to Jeannine's ideas - which I like a lot!

Selling for a Charity on e-bay is not quite as easy as it appears - here's a few ways:

1. just sell stuff and send money after costs to charity

2. register as a seller for the charity - this can only be done by a seller with a credit card - willing to give details, and I'm unsure as to how fees etc. are taken out of profits

3. Advertise the items as being for charity and get charity to acknowledge seller on their own web-site. (not always easy, depends on charity etc.)

I do this for the Hospice which I have been involved with for 20+ years - unable to do no. 2 as no credit card, so tend to stick with no. 1 as charity unable to list my seller details on web-site!

Those are good points, I do have credit cards but I think as a one off maybe just the usual way would be better. This is why I think it should be seen to be done. It is allowed to put proceeds to charity on an item and I think a sensitive description should convey the meaning of the project, XX Jeannine.

Another possibility for a meet is Barnsdale Gardens - I know that Sarah loved it there, she attended more courses last year at Barnsdale than some of the staff there!

It's also a beautiful place, and I'm sure that if there were enough of us and we explained our situation, we might get a talk of some kind !

Mmmmmmm...................more I think of this the better it sounds, it's fairly central, and Rutland water is just a stones throw away - so other places to go and see!

Ooooooo.........I'm getting excited now - what do you all think?

Please count me in wherever.

On the squash seeds for charity - which I think is also a great idea.  Would we have to be extra careful that they didn't cross pollinate - if we were selling the seed then we would have to make sure they came true - paper bag time?

Marymary, my idea of the squash seeds was to buy them in bulk, make up little  attractive packs of several types enclosed by a pretty wrapper, and sell them to a wider audience to then donate the money to the cancer trust or ?

I think it is an idea worth exploring but it will have to be done carefully and very professionally,

I can get the seeds wholesale from the Us I think, I can certainly get them in large quantities. I can pack them too with small pictures or descriptions of the type of squash the little packet holds. Perhaps someone could design the  first outer packet, and or/decide what it should say on it.

I could do it on e bay but would prefer to hand that to someone else. I hate handling money unless I have to .

Perhaps it could be discussed at your meeting , several heads usually come up with the best answers.

I also think it will take a bit of time and we may not be able to do it for this year but have it ready when seeds start being advertised in the late Autumn.

Anyway it is worth a thought.

Does anyone know what her very favourites were.

I guess it would't just have to be squash, it could be a blend of squash, toms and ??

Sorry Jeannine, I missunderstood & thought we were going to save seeds from those she had sent us which is a good idea but I think fraught with technical difficulties.  Buying them in bulk sounds much safer.  I would think that it would be better to stick to all squashes or all tomatoes - mixed packets of different squashes or toms might be fun.

Perhaps in the cultivation notes we could say that they have to be mulched with straw.  :)

I have just been on the phone to Nic Hamilton, (son of Geoff), who runs Barnsdale gardens, and gave the lecture that Sarah, Emma and I went to last year. :D

Nic is sure that he is able to do something for us, dependant on the date, he thinks that he would be able to meet and greet the group, and get the Veg supervisor to give us a tour of the "Allotment Garden". ;D

All Nic needs is a few dates, I'm thinking end of May, and he said that we could receive more attention if it was a weekday. (but pref. not the week of Chelsea, as they will be busy!) So how does sometime week starting the 14th May sound to everyone?

Nic was really nice, and has said to e-mail him with a couple of dates, and number of people and he will do his best!  ;D

Re seeds for Supersprout memory. I have made a few enquiries, re bulk cost of squash seeds. Costs vary re type eg. for 4 ounces of seed, and they do come much bigger, Quensland Blue cots $23.0, and Butternut is $6 .50 with prices in between.
4 ounces is quite a lot of seed but I would be inclined to buy more than that.

For easy calculation figure about $2 to a £1.

I looked at the US market as the choice is good, about 40 differet types on one site, and usually seeds are cheaper.

I have only enquired at 2 places so far and would want to shop around much more before making any choices which I would not do without everyones blessing.

Let me know what you think and I can pursue the idea a bit further if you wish.

I think if we go ahead a joint decision as to what types to investigate might be the next step.

Ideas please.

As I said in another section, I have been away from the forum for a while, so I was so sad to read about Supersprout.
Did she have a favourite vegetable?
If so I could do a painting of it with an appropriate quotation, e-mail to people who could print it off and hang in kitchen/garden shed as a reminder of Supersprout!

Nic was really nice, and has said to e-mail him with a couple of dates, and number of people and he will do his best!  ;D

WOW, great count me in i can make most weekends

Just been in touch with the wildlife trust, they manage the land around the allotments.

I am going to let them have a couple of SS pumpkin and squash seeds to plant in the communal orchard as they have lots of kids come to visit.

They can give the kids the fruit to make pumpkin heads and pies and instructions on saving the seed for next year.

So SS legacy will live on and on and on!!
