It was a great clue   :icon_cheers: - but the 'digger' had me stumped.  Wonder whether the term hails from  WW1?  Digger - the one who digs trenches?
Title: Re: Pass the Parcel - We're off
Post by: Digeroo on November 18, 2014, 10:08:35
I thought it might be something to do with Didgeridoo.   Though they are rather associated with you know who.  Pity I did like his paintings.  I thought the Australian digger came from gold digger/miner.

I actually managed to mess it up originally and meant to put in two gs.  Actually wanted to be Ermintrude.  But it said that was taken, which is odd because there does not seem to be one.  The Digeroo was to do with the fact it originally took me months to dig my plot because it was as hard as concrete.  I later discovered all I needed to do was wet the ground and it soften up.  It must have been the driest March/April ever.  Duh. :BangHead:  The other reason I chose it was because I hoped I was digging for gold at the end of my rainbow.

Well it has come and been and gone.  Took to the PO and they said £12.78, it was quite a struggle to shave .06 kg off and getting it back under 2kg.  Quite a few packets have had bits of spare paper snipped off.   Odd since it came with an extra layer of brown paper.

There is only one word:  Wow!  All sorts of interesting stuff.  A number of things I have been wanting to try.

If is now off to someone one named for a nereid who attended the god Neptune,  a name particularly popular in Latvia where it was the only given name for 1130 people.   Perhaps a bit of a strong breeze?  or a maybe small girl in Scotland?

Sorry not very cryptic but very interesting.

Don't think so .............
Scottish girl - lass, lassie, bairn?

Bit of a stiff breeze?  blast?  ie B
Bairn - B, blast - B
Nigel B?  But I don't know about Nigel.  is it popular in Latvia?

When I was at school the head always called us Gals.  I spent 6 years of my life being greeted every morning with 'Goodmorning Gals.'  It certainly had no R in it, she really rolled those.  So I thought perhaps the ina made it a small one.

Should be with you soon.

Galina=
Gal=girl
gail= gale
definitely a name that is traditional in Russia, Latvia etc. 'those sort of countries'..
and little bit of googling relieved that one of the Neptunes nereids (must check that word to...don't know exact meaning of it..)was called GALINE! :drunken_smilie: :toothy10: :glasses9:

ETA...Nereid= sea nymph...and Galine was goddess of the calm seas...how appropriate is that!? :icon_cheers:

Have you got any sea legs gal? :tongue3:

I am pleased it has reached you, I always worry after they leave me.  Especially since I snipped some cardboard off the inside of the box to lighten it.  I had to declare the contents at the post office, seems there are getting funny about what you can send.  I had to declare it was non poisonous.

I really should have made up a set of small envelopes before it arrived.  The postage goes up on the 18th January it is on a special offer at the moment.

Certainly best ever pass the parcel.  Big thank you from me too.

I'm glad that you mentioned about post office. I posted seed parcel today and something else other day..both times they asked what was inside the parcel. I was just about to start telling them 'mind you own business'...or 'you are nosey one!'... :glasses9:
They've never enquired that with domestic mail before, just with international mail. I didn't have declare anything though...wasn't asked about being poisonous. I would like know what is going on!!!
Hmm...must start practicing my acting skills .. :glasses9:

There is a whole list of things they will not send any more.  I had a problem returning a phone with a battery in it.  Which was odd since I have had lots of batteries before and since.   We had to wait for the battery to be discharged.

Had problems with some plants as well because they were wet had to prove they were sealed in.

I had a problem returning a phone with a battery in it.

Something that happened to me today....had to send phone back to Tesco, which provided all the packaging and labels etc..and then in post they start asking questions... :BangHead: Postie woman said the battery is not the issue but "is the battery connected to the phone..."? Tesco never mentioned it should not be.... so my answer was ..."errr...no it is not connected...(oh dear...)..."
Title: Re: Pass the Parcel - We're off
Post by: Robert_Brenchley on November 21, 2014, 18:47:38
They started asking round here some time ago. The local one plays silly buggers; they told me a while back that you can't send seeds by letter post, which is nonsense, and then they tried to charge £11 and odd for a parcel another office sent for £2 and odd.
Title: Re: Pass the Parcel - We're off
Post by: Digeroo on November 21, 2014, 21:06:10
Certainly I have had problems with seeds in letters, they are not allowed to be bumpy, seems it upsets the sorting machines and they get caught.   It is odd because you are allowed a badge on the card.

I think it is just an excuse to charge more.

All packed up again, weighed and weighed again ready to go to the post office first thing tomorrow.
But where is it going?

Here is a little description of where the parcel is going next.  The post office should have no difficulty getting it there, after all the M42 as well as the A41 provide excellent access.  Despite this, the place is set in an idyllic park landscape, close to the river Blythe.  It is a paradise for wildlife too, including the rare Tyto Non Alba.  The romantic Half Moon coppice is also nearby.

Okay,I've posted it off to the next person. Living next door to the Leadbetters?

The weight of the parcel went over the 2000g limit, probably because I added a few 'heavy' seeds — peas and such. I had to resort to some weight reduction — removing outer envelopes from seeds, stripping previous layers of selotape from the box, etc. to get it down.

Thanks Ian. Sorry there wasn't much space, I thought it would get lighter as it went around. Perhaps the next person could take a few extra seeds out to make a little room, I'll send a pm to....?

YES! It is NORA  :icon_cheers: I was wondering her comment about nits so when I looked into it...there used to be nit inspectors in schools called 'nit Nora's'....you learn something new everyday :drunken_smilie: Though that was before my time here in UK.
And there was ancient Roman city with the same name too.

Galina's rhyming slang was clever guess.....something I know little about so could not venture there.. :drunken_smilie:

I have now gone through all the bundles in the parcel...everything is neat tidy and in order for parcel to go its travels again. I shall post it today... :icon_cheers:

May I say....I was really pleased to all different poppy seeds...even if some were originally mine  :icon_cheers: I used those long ago and it was good to get some more :icon_cheers: I've made poppy seed medley and I will walk around allotment site and my plots with 'leaky bag'...'accidentally' sowing some here and there...OH it will be pretty!! :icon_cheers: :evil6:

Oh good.  Didn't know about Nit Nora's either, but also remembered Nora's mention of nits and tried to make that fit - somehow.......................

Yes, the poppy seeds in the parcel were amazing and so many too.  As it happens we went to see the poppies at the tower of London at the time I got the parcel.  Trip got delayed, should have been earlier .... long story.  And they were already well into the process of taking all the ceramic poppies away when we got there.  Quite sad but still an impressive sight.  For a brief moment I thought, what if somebody sowed poppy seeds to have them growing there forever, to make it a remembrance site for years to come?

Enjoy the parcel Nora, it is quite something.

Yes it would be good idea..though maybe as poppy beds as the soil would have to be quite bare rest of the time and it would not look that attractive.
Our local council did had poppy theme going on this year..in spring they scraped turf off on same areas for new flower beds...sowed some flower mixtures with of poppy seeds in...and this summer those beds were full of them..delicate little poppies  :icon_cheers:
It was nice change from the usual bedding theme and I'm sure bees and birds enjoyed the nectar and seeds too :icon_cheers:

Gosh is it me next I am so excited? ...... let me explain the Nora bit I'm not "nit" or "nitty nora" the school inspecter but Knitty Nora the knitter which is admittedly a bad play on words - I have a BA Honours in Knitwear Design and spent 15 years working in the rag trade before having my children, who have over the years got nits you want to try getting the little blighters out of hair like this...

also as I work in the school garden would anyone mind me selecting a few of the more unusual seeds for them to grow?

So I'm waiting with baited breath .....

Post by: goodlife on December 09, 2014, 14:26:01
Ok...parcel posted...AND this is how it went..

-hi, I've got parcel to post..
-what is in it?
-seeds...
'she is now raising her eye brows and looking at me funny way.....'
-lets weigh it....1.9kg...it is £9 and 'something'..
-WHAT!....NO IT ISN'T....it is small box, under 2kg and it doesn't cost more than £3.90
-Yes it would be if it would be 'small'..it is too big..'placing empty display 'small' box over the parcel'...see it doesn't fit!
(there is 1cm gap on between table and top box... :BangHead:) There is bulge on the box that sorting office won't like..and that puts it in next size category...

-OH just give it a little poke...it is only a little crease on the cardboard..there is no 'bulge' behind it...just air....'I'm starting to loose my cool now....'
-Yes, I can see what you mean...'poking the box'....'putting the other box over it again'...
-See it fits now! ...and by the time it has been waiting pick up and with 'ton' of other parcels top of it..it will be even less bulged..
I could hear her mumbling behind the counter to herself....'I still don't like that bulge'...

-...and I need tracking number for that parcel too..and my instructions for posting says 'second class'..(I bet she was getting really fed up with me now....  :evil6:)
-No... we DON'T do 2nd class with small parcels...but the price is what you wanted...AND there is NO tracking number on these neither....
-WELL....funny how other people with this same parcel have had their tracking numbers... :BangHead:
-there is 'barcode' on the receipt...that can be used for tracking this parcel....
- :BangHead: That will do then....

WHY IS IT so bloody difficult with some numpties in post office.... :BangHead:

Jayb....'tracking number' barcode is pm'ed to you shortly... :tongue3:

SO....what do we learn from all this....stick to you 'guns'...customer is always right!!!!  Make sure there is no substance behind the bulge..just air.. :icon_cheers: And read the receipt...mine says...'signed for, 2nd!!!!!!, small parcel'  :icon_cheers: :glasses9:

I know just what you mean.  Yes, I had to ask too.  The barcode is what you want for tracking number.  That's fine.

I was lucky, that I had the casual Christmas employee lad.  He put it in the box, the cellotaped side was about a mm higher, he just gently pushed it down and said, yes, that fits.  But if I had got the regular postie, I would have had the same.

Usual question about what is in the box but somehow I almost felt that I had got away with it!  They DO know how to make you feel bad.

Glad it has gone off to Nora ok (and I bet she is too).  I started by carefully removing old cellotape with tweezers and I think that almost everybody has to do this too.

Now - BREATHE !  and  :coffee2: - then   :sunny:

Hi everybody this thread is funny and I am not offended by anyone especially not Lottie Lou  - I think having a qualification in knitting does that for you so many people think knitting is an old fashioned and a dull past time which it is not and never has been in my humble opinion. I have been at posh parties when in my younger years and some old leachy horse and hound bloke asked me what I was reading at university and when I said knitwear design his eyes glazed over and he left me standing there, or the young drunk lawyer who cited my qualification as a waste of space time and money he changed his mind after I told him how much I was earning in year and how far around the world I had been. I have stood in factories in Korea only to realise that they wouldn't work with me because I was a woman got around that one because I was born in 1967 year of the Horse and a fire horse at that which according to my tormentors is "worse possible sign for woman"

thanks for the compliment on my babies  Pumpkinlover they're angels to look at but in reality just normal children not perfect or outstanding - just the way I like them.
And Goodlife your post office tale is nothing new we have an old dragon in our post office who takes exception at about 99% of parcels it's worth complaining about them on the post office site last time I did I got a free packet of stamps.

I laughed when I read Goodlife's problems with the lady in the post office.  It brought back memories of my husband's experiences in post offices 20-30 years ago.

He worked as a Civil Servant and often had to use his car for business.  He claimed his mileage and was given giros for his expenses.  These could be cashed at any post office in the UK.  One day, he collected his giro from work and the following day we went up to the Yorkshire Dales on holiday.  We were staying in Wensleydale so he went into Hawes Post Office to cash his giro.  The woman behind the counter refused to cash it as it didn't have a designated post office on it.   :angry5:    My husband said that it didn't need one and she argued that it did.  He then said that he was not leaving until she cashed it.  She was assuming that he was a benefit claimant and was talking down to him with quite a nasty tone.   A queue was now beginning to form behind him.  My irate husband explained to her that it was his money..... money that was owed to him for travelling about on Government business..... money that he had already spent on petrol.  At this stage the post mistress got stroppy and threatened to ring the "fraud office".  My husband's reply was "please do".  She disappeared for about 5 minutes and came back and very quietly, gave him his money.   :icon_cheers:

The same thing happened when we lived in Scotland and he took his giro into a post office on Mull.  After almost half an hour of arguing, the post mistress still refused to cash it.  He couldn't do anything about it though or we would have missed the ferry.  He cashed it the next day in Oban.

When we moved back south, he had problems trying to cash another giro.  The post master said that he would have to take it to his local post office to cash.  This was at his local post office!

Expenses were normally paid a few weeks in arrears and that was bad enough, but to have all this palaver at the post offices, was really the last straw. Eventually, expenses were paid directly into employee's bank accounts rather than being given giros.

We can laugh and joke about these experiences now, but at the time they were really frustrating.    :BangHead:

I'm glad I could provide some 'entertainment'...though you should have been there on person..what I wrote was 'highly edited' version of it all. Once I get over certain 'Meldrew limit'...something happens inside me and I stop caring for trying to be 'nice'..and I just 'plough into' the cause of aggro..it is not me who will be blushing.. :glasses9: Being shy doesn't achieve any results... :angel11:

Looks like some postie people behind the counter have always had bit of attitude problem then and sound of all your replies..it is not in decline neither. Though there was something in news/some program last night how some computer program they use in post network has made some errors causing money losses in 'paper work'..and post masters are liable for any losses that show in their papers...so some have lost everything they ever had and been prosecuted for those errors. And post is not budging and giving any details for government for investigation of the liability.
When I hear all that...it almost softened my heart...almost!
I'm calm again...but WILL most definitely carry on checking prices online before hand...and maybe start buying the postage online more often too....though one still have to take the parcel to the post office..

So do I and knit and used to do machine knitting as well.  Just finished a baby kimono top in crochet for a friend's grandson and just started a knitted all in one suit for my new grandson due in a couple of days time.  Luckily its in thick wool.  Thinking of getting my machine down from loft as well and having another bash at that - well will have to do something with my time once I finally retire.

Any ideas where I can get a pattern for a double knit man's jumper - have about 20 balls of double knit wool for years.

Hello fellow swappers the parcel arrived today and I spent an afternoon going through it and picking and adding some seeds. what a fantastic selection to choose from - I have never seen so many varieties of tomato..............

Quick work Nora   :glasses9:

Pm sent

Many of those tomato varieties are ones previously shared by A4A members in swaps and seed circles as well as some of the varieties I have spare. They are a lovely collection for anyone looking for different or not so easy to find varieties. But the tip of the iceberg really as I am still holding a collection of shared varieties here from lots of different members. Jeannine sent a huge amount of varieties a couple of years ago and Ruud always generously shares and has different and unusual varieties. We did a virtual tomato parcel but if there is interest we could do a Tomato swap in the spring?

There is quite a number of those in current round robin already...but this could be 'more of tomato swap' and people could  add and swap chillies and peppers as well, as and when they get added into parcel...? Perhaps using round robin stash as starter....perhaps I could send some for start of the round to get things moving....(I don't have lots neither, but some amount of small 'bits'  of 'this and that')

??? ...just some thoughts.... :drunken_smilie:

There was a crooked lady and she walked a crooked mile
To a town where the spire was as crooked as her smile
A crooked parcel posted, packed with crooked seeds
And when you send it on beware the crooked thieves
They seem to work at the post office!

Perhaps using round robin stash as starter....perhaps I could send some for start of the round to get things moving....(I don't have lots neither, but some amount of small 'bits'  of 'this and that')

??? ...just some thoughts.... :drunken_smilie:

Sounds good, I'll check out what's what when it arrives back.

It's been sent can you guess to who- not many left now so this should be fairly easy...............

There was a crooked lady and she walked a crooked mile
To a town where the spire was as crooked as her smile
A crooked parcel posted, packed with crooked seeds
And when you send it on beware the crooked thieves
They seem to work at the post office!

Nora  :blob7:

:D

You know, whenever I see a church with a normal steeple it takes me a few seconds to work out why it looks so weird...

Positive tried to deliver yesterday whike I was asleep, so I picked it up from the delivery office today.

Wow! Never seen so many seeds! Haven't had chance to look at everything yet but I did immediately spot some things I'm very excited about.

That's my evening sorted then... :)

Fantastic I am so glad it arrived I was beginning to worry as I had the same old experience at the post office - too big - too heavy needs to be signed for blah blah blah  and when I finally got him to do it for £3.90 signed for he said it would never arrive, being in the mood for an argument I asked him should the post office be offering services that they seem not to bother with? at that point he went very quiet.

have fun it was a lovely afternoon for me I also picked lots of seeds I have never heard of and had to look up.

and I hope you smiled at the clue and didn't mind being a crooked lady. I saw that spire for the first time when a child and it really caught my imagination.

Yes, it's nice to have my ipad next to me so I can look things up! I thought I was pretty knowledgable about veggies and herbs but some of these are very new to me.

What's extra awesome is that there are things in there that have been on my mental wishlist for ages, so I've genuinely been all "yay" as I realised what they are!

I did like the clue, it made me laugh. :icon_cheers:

Just received the biggest seed parcel I've ever seen. I've already brought my seeds back from the allotment so I don't have to remember to bring them. It should be on its way again in a couple of days.

Think it might be a bit pricey sending that great big parcel to Ruud (Netherlands?). Shall I send a few stamps towards it?

Just want to mention that yesterday I potted up new-to-me tomatoes Roughwood Golden Plum and Orange Icicle , real name Sosulka Oranzhevaya and I am so much looking forward to growing and tasting these.  Whoever put them in the parcel, thank you.  Lots of other seeds to come, but these two were definitely on the wish-list and to find them in the parcel had me jumping with joy.  And good germination and good looking seedlings promise good things to come    :blob7:

Thank you Jayb   :sunny:
