Title: What veg you do not eat?
Post by: goodlife on June 05, 2010, 08:27:01
There is only few veg that my mouth will not get used to eating..no matter how many time I've tried.. ::) One that I really dislike is celery..it just taste almost soapy to me, yak..I always end up picking it out from food...I like pickled beetroot but unpickled..yak..taste like hadfull of soil..so earthy and goes with chard too. I do grow chard as I looks good all the fandy colours ;D ..and if I don't eat it chickens will ;)..and then there is all aniseed flavours..like with fennels and tarragong...now I don't mind the taste but I assosiate it with sweet things so It just taste odd with savoury things.

Asparagus. Yuck!....and artichokes, double yuck. Everything else I like and eat though, the only fruit I don't like is peaches, the furry skin makes me go funny but I like them peeled..... ::)

Celery is horrible.....and I will hve to admit to being seriously courgettist. OH puts them on the plate anyway ;). Normally hidden under something else ::)

I'll eat almost anything else though ;D

Celery is a staple in any soup mix. Try it with Leeks, Flat Leaf Parsley and Carrots.

One thing I had planned on growing was Artichoke but after a trip to Spain last year and tasting it, I think I'll give it a miss.

Nothing else really, anything I'm not overkeen on is always combined with other ingredients that enhances or disguises the flavour.

I can't think of a vegetable I don't like.

But I hate caraway seeds - I was ill with some childhood disease like measles or something, after I'd eaten a cake with them in. Since then I've never been able to stand them.

Two things spring to mind.

I can't think of any vegetable I actually dislike. But there are quite a few I don't choose to eat that often: cabbage, for starters - although I love sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli in its various forms and even kale. I like beetroot, but only when it's young, and then only occasionally. Celery is OK - more of a herb than a vegetable.

But I love all the others. Only 5-a-day? I feel deprived if I've got less than that per meal!

Parsnips, Beetroot and Swede.
(although I am growing a yellow beetroot to see if I like that, Burpee's Golden I think it is)

I hate leeks, cabbage, radishes, spinach and asparagus. Not keen on onions or garlic.  I like swede but my inside objects violently as it does with turnip.  Not keen on peas except mangetout or very young ones straight from the pod.  Not keen on many types of potatoes Maris Piper and Romano are disgusting.    A small amount of lettuce or rocket goes a very long way.

I am not sure that if you do not like beetroot that the yellow ones are much different.  If anything the beetrooty flavour is more intense.  Choggia is a bit different you eat it raw.

I love beans, broccolli and cauliflowem tomatoes, carrots, parsnips, beetroot and desiree potatoes.  And of course lots and lots and lots of courgettes  I love braised celery and raw celery and any other celery.

Celery, it's the most hated veg.

and sprouts.

Post by: artichoke on June 05, 2010, 21:38:25
I really dislike slabs of cooked celery, the flabby sour taste of it. OK raw and crisp, or as an addition to soup in small slices.

Artichokes (globe?) seem to be really disliked, but are one of my favourites, especially the young delicate ones with no choke. Sadly most of mine died this winter, so I have started off a large new set from seeds (thank you those who sent me some).

Have never appreciated turnips, though mashed swede is all right. Asparagus peas are pointless, but I am surprised at how many people dislike real asparagus. A heaped plateful, lightly cooked, with a herby butter to dip them in, is wonderful.

Can't think of anything else I dislike - I could eat three meals a day of fresh green and coloured vegetables, squeeze of lemon, grating of nutmeg, a little butter and salt......

i was wondering when the sprout haters would weigh in - gak! Hey didge, glad to find another picky veg-eater. I'm a northern girl so I didn't even know what a courgette was till I was in my twenties. Mostly, veg were no-go areas unless they came in a tin and even now, I don't eat brassicas, or asparagus or aubergine. Like celery but mainly grow loads and loads of spuds, tomatoes and onions. If I could grow biscuits though....

I can understand your dislike of broad beans, when you see what is for sale fresh in the shops.  They are horrid, and even when blanched and skinned are no better.

For the past few years we have been growing Imperial Green Longpod, and picking them while the beans are very small and tender. A completely different animal.  Would recommend them, even to hardened dislikers like you and your OH small ;D

With regard to broad bean-haters, I can uderstand their dislike, when you see what is on offer as fresh broad beans.  The beans are so large, and when boiled and skinned they are horrid.  Very good for fibre intake, but horrid.

If you grow your own bbs you are in charge of when they are picked.  In our case with Imperial Green Longpod, we pick them when the bens are just showing in the pods.  Very small juicy beans.  I would defy the bb haters to dislike them.

Know what you mean landimad.  Horrid damp soggy rotten cardboard is the best description we can come up with for 'fresh' coriander.  Yeuk.

Don't mind the seeds though.

Oh dear I must be odd, I love celery and even celeriac within moderation. Crunchy raw dipped in creamy sauces and lovely in a milky soup.

The only thing I really don't eat is swede. Vile.

All other vegetables I wolf down. It usually depends on how you cook them though as to whether they are nice or gross. Boiled sprouts are disgusting, lightly steamed or cooked in their own juices in a thingy of butter and they are heavenly.

There are many veg that I don't grow however because I am the only one who eats it.. (like braod beans or kohlrabi, which is actually nice grated in a salad)

Aubergines - nasty soggy texture.   Cooked celery, though I like it raw and love celeriac.   Swedes.    Spinach makes my tongue feel furry but I like the green leaves of Swiss chard which doesn't have that effect on me.  Sprouts are disgusting raw, creamed, steamed, any which way.

Love asparagus but not asparagus peas; artichokes both globe and Jerusalem; cooked beetroots with onions tomaties and cumin (Madhur Jaffrey), baked with garlic and olive oil or horseradish and cream or in soup or chocolate cake but not pickled; cabbage raw and cooked but not sprouts; broccoli, purple sprouting and cauliflower, beans of most descriptions; chicory but not endives, kohlrabi in salads but not cooked; peas: fennel; onions; garlic; carrots, parsnips, pumpkin; toms and chillies; salad leaves and so on.

Tinned ones! I hate mushy peas or overcooked peas. Baked beans. Celery I could do without. Salad is dull but fills a gap if its made interesting. Other than that I like everything. Strange how many people seem to dislike coriander, I love it. Aubergines are horrible unless they soak up a sauce. Swedes are lovely, so much nicer than turnips!
Title: Re: What veg you do not eat?

goodlife, if you can taste bitterness in your purple-podded peas, you may be a supertaster, ie have more of the tastebuds that can detect bitterness.  :P About a quarter of us are.

If you hated the taste of cabbage, sprouts and PSB as a child, it was probably the bitterness you were picking up on.

I'm a supertaster, too - it took me a very long time to acquire a taste for beer, but I got there in the end! Strange to think that nature doesn't allow us all to taste things on an equal basis...it's all in the genes.

Are purple podded supposed to be a bit bitter..?

Sufficiently so to notice if you're eating full-sized peas raw. It varies from one variety to the next, but none of them are particularly sweet. If you're cooking them into a dish rather than separately, you wouldn't notice.
Title: Re: What veg you do not eat?
Post by: Spudbash on June 23, 2010, 19:55:46
I sympathise, Flighty. I imagine you will appreciate the texture of your veggies more than some of us do. I know the texture partly depends on cooking (or not cooking), but otherwise it alters with variety and degree of ripeness.

Perhaps you're best-placed to recommend which fruit and veg have a really good crunch or are silky-smooth or are particularly juicy, and so on? Personally, I love a really ripe pear...  :)

There are so many different ways to appreciate fruit and vegetables when you grow your own - colour, shape, flavour, texture...and the ones I haven't thought of yet!  ;D

As for purple-podded peas, I'm reminded of this blog, which I think an A4A-er recommended some time ago. Someone here is looking to breed a decent-tasting purple-podded pea - see the posting for 31 May:

That's a brilliant blog. The sweet-tasting modern peas are descended from a mutation that appeared around 1820, if I remember right. No reason why it shouldn't be combined with purple pods. The existing purple podded varieties are all field peas, bred for dried peas rather than fresh.

yes the mealiness of the purple pea definitely has its place too.
