Title: LOOKING FOR TOMATO GROWERS! BBC 2 series - What to Eat: Summer
Post by: Sarah R on June 29, 2009, 15:19:52
BBC Two's series, What To Eat Now is back and we are looking for enthusiastic tomato growers to be involved!

Chef and passionate foodie Valentine Warner’s first BBC TWO series has regularly reached audiences of 2.5 million and he’s been critically lauded as a great new food talent...

For his second series, What To Eat Now: Summer, we’re going to follow Valentine as he lead us through the delights of summer food - one of the most exciting parts of the culinary year for the food lover.

One of the delicious summer ingredients that Valentine will be focusing on is tomatoes, and he hopes to meet the most enthusiastic tomato growers in the UK.

If you are passionate about growing tomatoes, and have great knowledge on the subject, we'd love to hear from you.

Due to the resession, the BBC cannot afford to buy tomatos. Dear oh dear.

I would of thought the £3.6 billion generated by the tv licence fee would be enough to stretch to a pack of seeds.

We discussed who was growing the most varieties earlier in the year. I know it was more than 32 (because it beat my total).  Come on, own up.  BBC2 needs you.

PS I like Valentine Warner, he's prepared to kill what he eats - a bit like me and my tomatoes  :)

It's Valentine Warner's fault I have a plot (borrowed for the year) full of various squashes he highlighted in his last programme - and they are coming along a treat.

My problem would be that a ripe `heritage` tomato doesn`t really need a `chef`-it`s flavour speaks for itself-no salt. no balsamic vinegar just me and that tomato :P

Bloody heck can you imagine the great gardener being filmed and as the camera pulls back a great big stack of books at his feet.

I hope who ever does this has a dig at the commercial growers for half inching heritage tomatoes to create hybrids

Well said!

As for varieties, I've whittled my list down to 7 that suit my needs.

Beef.
Aurora.
Cream Sorbet.
Santa Cruz Cada.
A Bulgarian plum of my own strain
2 heirlooms with lost names, a round and a plum.

They all fill different niches in the kitchen if they make it that far.

Back to the BBC, I doubt that they are looking for good growers so much as good looking but cheap scenery.

When Jamie Oliver did those programmes on kitchen garden cookery, wasn't his garden stuffed full of heritage toms? Why can't they use him?

What!? you mean they were planted there 5 minutes before they started filming, and hoiked out after he'd gone?!  :D

I don't come cheap either. Not only am I too expensive for the BBC's cheap TV, I very much doubt that they could handle the controversy.

Sorry to hear that you are not going to be a telly star, I would of loved it for some of my hard earned money that I pay for a TV licence go into your back pocket, ;)

Eristic, I personally would LOVE to see you as a guest presenter on Gardeners World...can just see you in the end section where they have their cup of tea and have their matey discussions. Suspect your inclusion would be shortlived but memorable?

Would you wear a cravat?
