Title: sad news about my mum (super sprout)

i hope this appropriate to start a new thread but i felt the news warrented it.

i am very sorry to say that my mum died in the early hours of this morning in the hospice. she passed away peacefully in her sleep quietly and without pain which is what she wanted. the hospice called me at 3am and i ran all the way but missed the evnt but was still able to say goodbye.

i would like to take this opertunity to say a very big thankyou for all your kind messages of support for mum and myself. they meant alot to both of us.

mum loved her allotment and would talk about it and the various forums she went on alot to me. she loved to help and inspire people on their allotments and derived great joy from the help she gave. I like to think that, while she will not be able to plant, not dig and mulch anymore, through all of you guys she will in someway be enjoying allotments all over the country and will get many more seasons and squashes :)

If any of you felt like writing with your experiences and stories aboout mum or just to say hello please feel free. my address for the next month will be:

I will be making a donation to Thorpe Hall for all the help and assistance they have given mum and me and would welcome anyone else who felt like doing the same.

Thanks again for all the kind words, flowers and cards that have flooded in. mum really enjoyed them in her final days and made her feel very special. I am sure that at some point i will have a plot of my own and will be back asking alot of questions.

Thank you all again for bringing so much enjoyment and happiness into mums life.

Will, I am so sorry, your Mum will be missed on here more than anyone can say.  You are so lucky to have had such a special person as your Mum.  Treasure your memories of her.  I wish there was more that I could do to help, and will most certainly donate in her memory.  Please take care of yourself and keep in touch with us.

Thank you for letting everyone on the forum know your sad news about your mum. I will miss her postings very much.

I had only just heard of her illness via the forum, you obviously have been dealing with it for longer, but I know this will not lessen the shock.

We were lucky people here to have known Supersprout. She was the first person to welcome me to A4A and she was always an absolute joy to be around here on the boards.

I have only been on this forum for a short time and your Mum's postings was always an inspiration to us newbies as she had such passion for her allotment.

Will,

I dont know what to say.

The tears are still pouring down my face with her loss.

There is nothing that any of us can say to take the pain away that you feel now, but there is some consolation in knowing that she was loved and respected by us, that she went without pain and you were able to say goodbye.

My OH father was diagnosed with a rare cancer in June ( 5 or 6 years ago ) the said it needed treatment or he would not live more than 2 or 3 years imediatly he had cemo and it distroyed him. He did not know who he was where he was.. and sadly he died 2 months into his treatment on his wifes birthday. I saw him the day before his treatment and i was not there at the end.

Cancer is a very cruel illness, i make a regular donation to Cancer research.

Thanks for the address i will pop a card in the post and if there is anything else i can do please let me know as i am not 2 far away.

I too must echo the thoughts of others,this will be one very missed lady,she sent me some seeds too,they have just popped through today. Thre is little  one can say to help you with your feelings just now  but please accept my love and very sincere good wishes.In the short time I have been in the forum your Mum has been a real help to me, but more important than that her upbeat attitude and her very positive approach has left it's mark. Further to my earlier post I have been moved to contact my local hospice to see what I can do for them in recognition of the help you and your mum received from a hospice. I found that they are doing a sponsored Midnight Walk in the summer and so I have signed up for this and will do it in memory of your mum.

I hope you will approve of this.

Oh, I just can’t believe it.  Dear Sarah.

Back in October I groused on her Black Mango Chutney thread that everyone was raving about it and I hadn’t made any.  Just a jokey remark – but she sent me a jar.  She was so kind and generous.

In return I shared with her a few special tomato seeds given to me by another generous person who has since joined A4A.  A couple of weeks ago I told Sarah that they were from Jeannine, and we joked about our impatience to plant them.  She said we would have to remind each other ….

Perhaps you will plant them for her, Will.  I have been where you are now, and I am sure things will be a little easier for you knowing how much your Mum was loved and respected, even by people who never met her face to face.

I had only read the other thread yesterday and didn't realise how ill she was, so it was a real shock to read about her today.

I am so very sorry to hear your news Will, it must be a very difficult time for you and my thoughts are with you and your family.

I always read Supersprouts posts with pleasure as they were so interesting and she obviously had a wealth of experience and was so helpful to me and others.

Sincere condolences.

So sorry that this had to be the way, but thankful that she could pass on peacefully. Like a number of others here I have great simpathy for you, having myself lost a close relative to cancer a couple of years back, just when he thought he had it beaten; quite horrible.

I'm another who enjoyed her posts and am growing the jerusalem artichokes she so kindly sent recently. Like others, I will remember them as they flourish over the years ahead. Will - my heart bleeds for you and your family. Such awful news on such a lovely Springlike day here in the southwest. I've been out in the garden most of the day (doing what Sarah so loved to do  :)) and have only just logged on.

I feel so sad, but we must celebrate her life which she lived to the full. I used to wonder how she found the time to post on three other forums (to my knowledge) as well as here with her advice and humour.

Your mum was one of the most loved contributors to this and other forums. It is so sad that we will no longer see her mulch avatar or read her latest input on the art of mulching.

Take care of yourself Will. The next few weeks will, I'm sure, have some harrowing moments - but if you think of all the lovely memories you have of your dear mum, then you will be able to smile again.

Thank you for letting us have your address. You'll be hearing from me.

Will, I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. She was a real inspiration on this site, her response to my first post saying hello was so genuine and welcoming. We will all miss her and my thoughts are with you at this sad time. My partner lost his mum to cancer last year and we had to race to the hospice and also were too late, but we like to think she chose her time to go with dignity and grace and I'm sure your mum did too.

Sorry to hear about your mother Will, she was always one of the first to advise me especially when I first came on the site and I got a bale of straw for my birthday just to see what Sprout was going on about. The straw will stay and always be a reminder of her all the best Will, you dear mother Sarah will be missed.

On the 6th Feb I had an email from Supersprout telling me she was going away for a week or two, we now know where you are Supersprout and we will all see you there one day.

Thank you so much for coming on here and telling us the sad news.  It's always hard to know what to say in these circumstances.

I only met Sarah the once at Barnsdale with Kathi and we all hit it off. I too have a son called Will which we both thought was funny, we spent about 20 minutes comparing the two of you.  She spoke so highly of you and how much of a help you were to her.  She was always sending me unusual seeds, had a brilliant sense of humour and such kindness that will be missed so much.

Just wanted to echo what everyone else has said so far.

Will, you know that your Mum was a very special lady.  I never met her, but was immediately made to feel welcome on a4a because of Sarah's responses to my posts.  She understood the importance of string ;)

We did a squash seed swap and agreed to plant them on the same day - 17th April.  I will still do that and Barbara Butternut will be her memorial.

I will miss her posts and cyber friendship more than words can say.

Sarah Jones was a truly remarkable lady.  She fought this dreadful disease with such bravery.  Like Eric and Georgie we talked in here and on MSN and she had such a sunny disposition you couldn't help but laugh along with her but we knew that she was suffering.  Now she is at peace and you will have truly wonderful memories of a special Mum Will, because Sarah was a special lady.  I am going to miss her so much, we had such wonderful chats.  I would have loved to have met her in person but am pleased to have had her company for many hours albeit in a chat room.  A Special Person.   Rest In Peace  Sarah, till we meet again.

Will, it's winter again in our hearts just now, but in the spring your mum's seeds will grow in our gardens and plots and Sarah will live with us again and so her life with us will go on and on  and not be forgotten.

Please take care of yourself and I hope that you, too, have all the support you need, now and in the future.

As someone who was lucky enough to know Sarah outside this forum I don't wish to say too much right now.  But I'd like to contribute to this tribute thread in some way so here's an extract from an email I sent to Will earlier today.

'I've seen the lovely message you have posted on A4A and I hope the replies and cards that are sure to follow offer you a grain of comfort.  I want to gather my thoughts before I sit down and write you a letter about all the happy times Sarah and I shared.  All I will say for now is your mother was a ray of sunshine. She made me laugh so much and even though I'd only known her for about 18 months, she had become a firm and very loyal friend.  I'm going to miss her so much.'

Will, i'm so sorry for your loss - although i didn't know your mum personally I feel like i've lost a friend today too.  I lost my uncle to cancer almost two years ago, so know how cruel this devastating disease can be - I'm walking the Playtex Moonwalk in May and as well as doing it in memory of my beloved uncle Peter, i'll also be thinking of your mum.

I so grateful for all of the advice she's given me over the last few months, and how she's made me look at a bale of straw in a whole new light!  She has truly inspired all of us newbies, and i'll think of her fondly when i'm sowing my first ever seeds on the lottie this year.

Thanks for taking the time to let us all know your sad news, take care of yourself and the rest of your family.  Love & prayers to you all x

I usually looked for Supersprout's posts on the board because she had such a lot of information to impart. She was so helpful and kind, I couldn't find my Raddicho seeds and she immediately offered to send me some of hers...which I didn't need in the end as mine were found.
She always had something nice/supportive to say and lots of good ideas. i only live a little way away and had hoped I might meet her one day.

She was obviously a very brave lady amid everyones complaints about this or that I can't remember any indication that she was so ill. I don't think I could be that strong.

She is an inspiration to us all and I will miss her.

I am so sad to read this. Sarah was an absulte inspiration to us all. A few weeks ago I posted about how I am expecting a baby and did anyone have some advice on how to garden with a bump. She sent me a lovely and very detailed personal message on how she overcomes gardening with a different kind of "bump". At the time I was not sure what she meant, but now I know she was struggling with cancer and still took the time to offer me wonderful advice, I am sitting at my desk at work with tears running down my face.

Son of sprout / Will - thank you so much for sharing the news with us at this difficult time for you and I hope you can take some consolation in the fact that your mum's memory will live on in the way that we all garden on a daily basis on our allotments, as she has taught us all so much.

I am so sorry to hear of her passing. 

But at least she spent some of the time she had left doing something she loved - passing on her passion and love for growing things.  An inspiration to us all.

Yes she was Kea. 

I have posted my thoughts elsewhere but would like to add here that, Will, I am sorry for your loss.  I regarded her as a good friend on a number of forums and I will miss her a very great deal.  I too shall be growing pink pumpkins in her honour.  I hope it is a comfort to you knowing just how loved she was by so many people.

Very sad news. I've only just starting reading this thread as I've been out and about for the last few days. Although I never met Sarah, I've felt her generosity from reading  her posts on this forum - which were always full of great advice and very witty too - and through the seed swaps we have done.
I am not exaggerating when I say that about one third of the packets in my seed box have come from Supersprout and, like many others, I will remember her when I sow my lettuces, beetroot, Chicories and especially squashes!

My deepest sympathy to you, Will, and all who knew your mum.

I am only an occasional poster on A4A, but I am also an Admin on the GWD board where we were also fortunate enough to have Sarah as a member. It is clear from Sarah's posts that she was a very knowledgable and much loved person, who will be very sadly missed.

Hi Will,  like the rest of the A4A crew I am very saddened by the news she was indeed an inspiration to us all.

I received this private e-mail  from her just recently and it meant a lot to me.

Although it mentions me I am sure she thought the same of the others in the A4A  gang going by the replies she made to both the experienced and inexperienced among us.

last night i could not sleep and was looking though some recorded tv to see if there was anything i might want to watch and i found the last episode of grow your own with SS and i started crying again.

But it makes me think that they may have more footage which i am sure will would treasure.

Only just found this thread and had no idea that Sarah was ill. She was the first person to reply to my first post on here. I was advised to join this forum by someone on Poultrykeeper and have been a daily visitor ever since and always look forward to her posts. I am so sorry for your loss Will. She came accross as a special person so I am sure she was a very special mom.

I watched the 'grow your own veg' that she was in on tv especially to see her.

I'm so very sorry to hear this sad, sad news.

I never met Sarah but have always loved her posts. She made me feel very welcome when I joined A4A and gave me advice on no-dig method and so on. Also we had a seed swap once and she gave me loads of squash seeds. Really sad to think that she couldn't plant the seeds I sent her.

She was a warm, kind and generous lady with a great sense of humour. I miss her so much, this place won't be same without her.

Will - I've been away from the group for well over a season for personal reasons and it's taken me a day or two to read all the threads on Supersprout.  I swapped seeds with SS a few times and she was always so generous - full of humour and advice.  I regret now that I didn't harvest seeds from any of those crops, as I would love to have a memory of her in my garden and on my allotment.  I can't say how sorry I am for your loss, but I echo whole heartedly the sentiments expressed so well by others on the forum.
