Title: What are you going to grow for the first time this year?
Post by: allaboutliverpool on February 26, 2009, 18:55:41
I am going to try Okra for the first time, I know I like to eat it.

I will give Aubergines one last go I have only ever managed one fruit in 3 years.

I will NEVER grow asparagus peas again they were disgusting tasting and wasted a raised bed. They were only edible when tiny and too laborious too pick enough and over 1 inch in length were woody like old runner beans.

This is my first year of cropping the asparagus after a long wait.

Well three years running have failed to produce any fruit with okra, aubergines and melons but will be trying again.

failed with yardlong beans last year will try again this yr

for the first time i will be trying to grow:

celeriac
romanesco
turnips
oka
ulluca
Jerusalem artichokes
globe artichokes
sea kale
parsnips
brussel sprouts
cabbage,
cauliflower

scorzonera
salisfy
amaranths
swede

those that are underlined have never been eaten by myself or the family and i want to see if we would like them, if yes it will give us more winter crops.

and those in bold are vegetables that are not normally enjoyed by us and i would like to see if this will change if they are homegrown and picked fresh for the pot.

i live in hope :).

We had romanesco for the first time at Christmas as I thought it looked quite unusual and a bit Christmassy green and spikey! My boyfriend looked at it and thought I was crazy for buying it.
Must look out for some seeds!

Kids have requested: cabbage, peas, raspberries and carrots!!!!
Tried carrots last year with no success, probably going to be in pots! We have strange kids - visiting the supermarket they ask for cabbage, squash or prawns not sweets!!!

Am going to get the whole allotment going this year, so more spuds, but also going to set up a fruit patch with currants and raspberries (already got strawberries), beetroot - given some by one of the oldboys, they were fab, nothing like the pickled to death things I remember!!! Got lots of different types of squash.

Got some asparagus seeds I'm going to start - am nowhere near ready to plant them on the lottie, so thought I might as well start completely from scratch!! Also trying sweet potato.

I'm going to try ...... and chinese cabbage for the 1st time.

grew chinese cabbage last year and got some great heads but just when i thought the slugs were controlled i found there was a lot of cabbage white catterpillars inside the head, so i would net them as a precaution.

but then again the cabbage white i think was quite bad last year in 2007 they were barely a blip on my pest radar last year they attacked everything brassicus and other plant types as well :o :-X.

I'm going to try aubergines AGAIN this year. I have tried the past two years but haven't got anywhere with them. It seems quite a few people are trying this for the first time this year, it'll be interesting to see how we all get on.

Also going to try Kohlrabi and raspberries.

And..........all in containers  ;D

Thanks for the tip! Knowing  me I would have forgotten them but netted all the other cabbages! I found the cabbage whites a problem later in the summer, so don't know where they had got to earlier?

I'm going to try calabrese, cherokee trail of tears beans and 2 kinds of small winter squash - Acorn and Sweet Dumpling I think although the packets are downstairs and I can't be bothered to go and check just now. Ooh, and also scotch bonnet chillis and some different sorts of tomato. And some more herbs. And lots of sorts of potato that I got at the potato day.

I'm also growing more flowers: daffs (which have just come up - very exciting!!), tulips, sweet peas (doing well in pots inside at the moment) lily of the valley and gypsophylla and various others.

Everything has started growing again; I'm feeling in a seed sowing mood! :) :)

Mashua. (Tropaeolum tuberosum).
Jicama.
Quillquina.
Grain ameranthus.
Roselle.
Garbanzo Chick peas.
Sorghum.
Title: Re: What are you going to grow for the first time this year?
Post by: thifasmom on March 03, 2009, 09:59:35
those are some interesting ones you have there Eristic, where do you source your starter tubers for all your different root crops you try out?

i would be interested to know how the Roselle fairs we call it sorrel in the west indies and its a popular traditional Christmas drink.

are you planing to grow it undercover or outdoors? how are you planning to use the crop, as a drink, jam/ jelly or as a pickle?

in case you haven't come across a fresh one before the seed capsule is covered in very fine irritating hairs that can make the removal of the calyxes quite unpleasant so try and not handle the capsule when removing the calyxes.

where did you source your seeds were they a special variety for cooler climates?

They can be slimey if they are overcooked, so if you pick them young and cook them quickly they should taste better. Good luck with them!

Am planting borage for the first time as an adult (had some in my Mum's plot as a kid) and looking forward to lots of lovely blue colour in my salads.  Oh, and possibly some Pimms! ;D

Courgettes making their first appearance in the plot and as it was an absolute abysmal failure last year (not a single fruit), I think my attempt at aubergines can count as growing for the first time too...  Think my problem last year was crowding too many plants into one patio planter - just couldn't bring myself to throw any away and nobody wanted to take them off my hands so I just stuffed them all in the one planter. D'oh!

Oh, and lots of new varieties of toms, cukes and tatties, obviously!

I know this is a bit previous, but this year I want to actually grow things through winter...we only had perpetual spinach and one kale plant which escaped the pigeons to crop from all winter.

Going to try purple sprouting, mizuna, mibuna, parsnips, sprouts and proper spinach.

If pigeons are a real problem those cheap plastic "greenhouses" make a great frame for netting over big plants... keep an eye out for someone whose gets blown about/broken and offer to get rid of the bits for them....  ;D
