Title: Turnips
Post by: hyacinth_1 on April 28, 2010, 16:26:54
My hubby planted a load of turnip seeds which grew smashing (the big turnips) when he transplanted them into pots they where all pretty well looking good.  He kept them in the porch and watered them, but they all started to die within a week of each other.  He had to go to the garden allotment for more compost and while there asked the gent who was an old hand at everything.  He asked if he was watering them from the top as it kills the stems, always water from the bottom.

Is this the case all of you magic men that's been growing veg for yonks? :-*

I think the secret is in this comment;

when he transplanted them

They don't take kindly to transplanting.

What generally happens is; you sow insitu then thin the plants down until you have the disired spacings.

If you are growing in pots (as I think you are) it would have been better to sow a pinch in several pots and thin them out!

I don't think watering comes into it!
