Title: Frogs, have you
Post by: Nigel B on February 24, 2012, 19:39:08
... Seen any slimy going-on in your pond or surrounding ditches? Any frogs sitting quietly in the lounge keeping themselves to themselves?
Sporn? Spro.. No
Sp... What?

S-P-A-W-N?  :-* Thank you.

Ok.  8)

Seen any frogs eggs yet?

If you have, which part of the Country World are you in?
Or is it 'at'?  ???
Hmmm.

I haven't seen  anything here in North Wales, but I have been known to miss much. .. And often ;)

You might be right though. :)
Good thinking Brown Thumb, and here's me, all the while studying the actual Moon thing trying to understand this planting by Moons-Cycle stuff, so I can apply it to my allotment. So far though, fair doos, by following the Moon-Guide every seed I have planted in the heat, light, and moisture-controlled environment, has sprouted.
You can't knock that.  ;D

Still no Frog activity though.... C'mon Frogs.

Heeere Frogs!

Interestingly, and I cannot for the life of me think why this should be. But humans, us, (just in case  :P .... Well you never know  ;)).... We cannot smell water.
There. I said it would be interesting. And it is when you think about it. No?
Most other creatures can recognise the smell of water, but at some point in our past the ability to smell water must have become less important to our survival than other things.
Things like, oh I dunno. Recognising yellow snow and knowing, without smelling it, that it would not be a good idea to eat it.

So that's that particular life-question answered then. 8)

Not even a croak from the pond yet though......

Nothing again this year,I doubt there is a frog anywhere near either. It`s been about 10 years now since our village was infested with grass snakes and the frogs/toads have never established again :(

Yep - two clumps of frog spawn and one shortish length of toad spawn.

Last year the goldfish ate the lot! Maybe I should start feeding the fish early to deter them? - they are swimming near the surface already.

I reckon the pond will be a jelly filled mass by the end of the weekend.  ;D

Oh, and my little pond is in sunny Essex.

yes lots of frogsong and orgies ( one dead one see wildlife thread) and now lots of spawn. there is only one sorry clump of weed to attach it too and the garden is a shady one but the frogs seem to like it.  I am just north of bristol

But, but but..... I'm in North Wales too. Still can't see any, but I'll have another look around tomorrow.

It looks like they are starting to get to it though. You folks' reports are widely spaced.
Maybe they just don't like me. Wouldn't be the first time I've been turned down flat by something with starey eyes and a croaky voice.  :-[

on another thread, i wrote about my awful discovery of finding a dead fat frog in my pond the other week (was so scared by it, i had to leave the lotti! :o) Since then, I've been wondering if frogs are territorial or not, as this one would of 'claimed' this pond as theirs and potentially spawn in it this yr (went in last summer). do you think there is still a chance for other frogs to use it now that it's free? I've not noticed other frogs nearby. there is a smaller pond but that's at the top of the slope but that usually has much smaller frog/lets.

oh, and btw, the cause of the death may be due to drowning. what i didn't notice at the time was this 2nd hand rigid pond (4' x 3.5' ish) had perforated holes about 6" from the lip of the rim. this meant that the water level was quite low, and that the frog didn't have a fighting chance to get out. as i didn't install the pond myself and got my friend to do it, i hadn't anticipicated this tragic scenario from happening.

i've since added a ramp for any wildlife to climb out with sunken bricks in one corner. hopefully that'll be more frog-friendly for any visitors...

Sadly like a couple of years ago all my taddies have gone  :o :o :o
I thought the pond was "sour" but I think not.
A lottie friend said perhaps it was overnight temperatures but there is no evidence of dead tadpoles.
I had a poke around but disturbed some toadspawn so thought I'd better leave it.
Have any of you any thoughts/experience of this ?
We still seem to have a healthy frog population in the garden, something the OH doesn't thank me for-he hates 'em  ;D ;D ;D

By this time most ponds with a frog / tadpole population will probably have several of those nasty bully-boy/girl tadpoles that have begun to eat the smaller slow developing tadpoles...

I'm not sure if toad tadpoles behave in the same way but frogs' tadpoles are not the nicest mates to have if you're another tadpole.  :o

My pond has just had several hundred gallons of rainwater added so I guess the occupants have plenty of room. There was spawn and now there are wriggly bits near the shallow edge but to be fair I haven't done an in depth examination. Its been pretty chill and we had ice at least one night after hatch season so it will pay the inhabitants to be robust.. We usually have a few frogs and toads under the rhubarb, in the poly etc. so I guess the pond has its own quiet life going on... ;)
No fish unless they've been bought in on something's feet. Mind you the Kingcups are glorious ;D ;D

If they hop then most likely to be frogs. If they walk then most probably toads.  ;)

If they cycle keep it quiet and send me a personal message - we could be rich  ;D

I've never fed tadpoles as they find enough in the pond - mainly plant life to begin with. Some turn cannibal and  eat their siblings too!!

Speed at which they develop into froglets depends on the weather / temperatures and available food sources.

Yours seem quite late to only now be hatching.  ???

Bumped this up as the subject suits my question.  Has anyone here heard their frogs "singing" at night recently? I thought they males did this in the spring they were making quite a noise in the night beneath my window. perhaps they were just enjoying the rain :wav:

Re-bumped because my pond is suddenly full of them.
I was having a tidy-up at the back of the pond, pulling back some weeds and stuff and happened to stand on a springy-plank affair that runs between the pond and the greenhouse wall, when to my absolute amazement a lot of frogs, double-figures for sure, burst out from under the plank into the pond and straight down in amongst the old leaves, mud and whatever lurks down there where its dark.
I had no idea they gathered like this in the winter..... But then again, I have no idea what I thought they did. For all I knew they could have hopped south or something, and it is now fairly obvious that's not true.

So, hmmmm

It is a south-facing, base-of-the-greenhouse-wall location, so it may very well be rather warm there at this time of year. Comparatively ...

I guess they were disturbed on a warmish day and decided to hop it for fear of being eaten by a fox or other predator. They usually find somewhere protected from the worst of winter's weather then await the warmth of approaching spring.

Hopefully they will hop straight back to snooze for a few more weeks.

.... So I turned to 't-internet and had a look at frogs and what they do, and it seems Goodlife has it .(no surprise there ;-)) :sunny:

They'll be gathering around the pond they intend to lay in apparently, which is fantastic news for me because I'd thought our population of local frogs had died out after we arrived here and took on the garden by cutting it back and keeping hens in it. :glasses9:
I also learned that they live for around eight years and will start to breed in their fifth year.

I can't see any of them now so I'll assume they've tucked themselves away back where they were. I'll just be a bit more careful and leave that area alone as much as I can.
Chuffed to bits, me. :toothy10:

On Saturday I could scarcely believe my eyes - but yes, two clumps of frogspawn at the shallow end of my pond! I'm not really that surprised when I think about it. We've scarcely had night temperatures at 0C more than a couple of times so far this winter. Right now at 11:15pm my outdoor sensor tells me it is 11.2C, though this afternoon around 4pm it was at 9.7C. This weird increase in temperature at night has happened quite often this winter.

I bet the frogspawn doesn't survive though - either the fish will eat it or we'll get a frost which will probably kill it off.

Oh well spotted Tricia!

And also, believe it or not, the pond looks like its been trashed this morning and the fish were obviously disturbed. I spotted two frogs, one locked onto the other, with the other looking at or near deaths door. I suspect they had it all going on last night.
No sign of any spawn though, which is slightly worrying, I had hoped to rescue some to grow on in the greenhouse water-butt.
Still, hopefully this is just the first stirrings...

Toad spawn looks like this:

http://uk.images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?p=toad+spawn&back=http%3A%2F%2Fuk.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3Dtoad%2Bspawn%2Bimage%26fr%3Dmy-myy&w=535&h=387&imgurl=www.pyb.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fenvirodiary%2Fenvirophotos%2Ftoad-spawn.jpg&size=42KB&name=toad-spawn.jpg&rcurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pyb.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fenvirodiary%2Fenvirophotos%2F%3Fsortby%3D1&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pyb.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fenvirodiary%2Fenvirophotos%2F%3Fsortby%3D1&type=&no=1&tt=110&oid=ea9eaa15b542210774eb849b953b645b&tit=toad-spawn.jpg&sigr=11ub2c8e7&sigi=11slj4f1e&sigb=1272207rb&fr=my-myy

'My' frog spawn has increased in size and is now one large clump - have only had one night when the temperature went down to zero since first seeing the spawn, so hopefully it will survive. I'm amazed the fish haven't eaten it as I don't feed them between end November and beginning of April.

Frogspawn ahoy!
Nearly two months behind Tricia's January 28th find down there in the south of England to the forst spawn I have seen here in the north--east of Wales. Just about walking pace for me. :-)
The pond weeds are battered by the mighty-mating being carried out by a surprising amount of Frogs. They've been at it for a couple of weeks now, but this morning here were two small clumps of spawn, and when I looked out of the window this afternoon there were little Froggy-heads scooting about all over the place and a quick peep revealed a lot more, so hey are at it all day too, which was unexpected by me. (Live and learn. Every day something new.)

So, Spring is here for me! All it needs to do now is get warmer and wetter and we'll know Summer is on the way too. :icon_cheers:

Title: Re: Frogs, have you
Post by: tricia on March 19, 2013, 17:11:21
As anticipated - the frog spawn first seen end of January has disappeared. The fish must have eaten it - there certainly isn't any sign of tadpoles! It is also possible that the very heavy rain of a couple of nights ago - which almost caused the pond to overflow! - dislodged it from the shallows where it had nestled among stones and Creeping Jenny, so giving the fish even easier access to a feast.

Our pond was teeming with frogs spawn and frogs and very vocal they were too .
Today it looks empty and muddy with the plants in a mess,I can only assume it's a pair of mallards that drop in at this time of year.I try to discourage them as we once found them on our koi pond and worried they would get tangled in the protective netting.                                                                                                        The OH loathes the little croakers :laughing8:

Frogs can be a pain in the pond if there's too many of them and your pond is a particularly decorative one.

Our pond is piddly - it's a small green prefabricated / molded model with three shelves for plants - only the plants have failed to stay put on the shelves.  :sad5:
It often looks lovely when things burst into bloom.

Our fish are sadly depleted - after breeding they became overstocked and oxygen levels dropped. We have several of the fry growing up nicely as well as some golden / red ones left from a few years back.

We welcome the frogs.... as does the cat who enjoys stalking them in the undergrowth. She rarely harms them having tried a jaw full years ago and found they're not that nice raw.  :cat:

I love the things each with its own varied pattern and colouring. They are a real asset in the garden. Our fish appear not to eat the tadpoles or if they do only a few.

Look out for newts as they are the bringers of bad news for tadpoles.  :evil4:

Here there's still loads of time to find new dollops of frog spawn but toads are rare. I'm not sure but I think there are rules or even laws against moving toad and probably frogs (may include spawn) from one pond to another.

In the case of toads because they are a protected species.
In the case of frogs because there is a disease than can be transferred along with the frogs.

Sad to think that years ago, not many minutes walk from here, they were common creatures along with the sand lizards, slow worms, grass and smooth snakes. The most you find in the long grass now is empty plastic drink bottles and burger wrappers.  :disgust:

Now the weather is warming up a tad I shall start to feed the fish again so they don't go looking for nourishment near the toad spawn  :happy7:.

well, one of them is a mild whiteish cloudy clump, one with clear gel and a distinct black dot and the other, clear gel but with the nucleus extended to distint 'rod' shapes.

hurrah - 2 living clumps out three!  :blob7:

Good question Irridium. I have no idea.
I'd probably be tempted to leave it with a 'let nature take its course' kind of attitude. Probably wrong though....

I have two new clumps of frog-spawn to report today! And here was me  thinking it was all done and dusted.... "Don't judge other frogs by your own standards" would seem an apt retort.... :-)

I'll leave well alone as the pond's so small anyway, wouldn't want to cause too much disruption... thanks NigelB

The Croakers have only started spawning here (also N Wales) in the last week...the toads were here 3 weeks or so ago and there are still a few about doing what comes naturally now...
Our Newts are doing it too...but you have to be VERY lucky and quiet to see them...

way-hey, they're all hatched now (not sure if that's the right word for it!) now and swimming away. think they're feeding on the dead clump as they're all huddled together bobbing away on the surface. there are some stragglers around the edges of the pond not so frantic moving and i think they're the ones that have finished feeding, maybe?

had a female blackbird feed off some too, but my cat caught sight of that and it went (don't normally have birds in the garden!)

Wow you are so lucky having frogs let alone spawn. Here in South Wales I haven't even heard a frog!
