Title: survey - who owns your plot?
Post by: nodig on November 21, 2018, 10:34:35
Hi plotters.  We all dig the land but who owns it?  Could the forum members help with this little survey.  Who owns the land that you have your plot on? I am just interested nothing sinister.  I expect most will say council owned (town council or parish council), but let's find out. I will start - my plot is on privately owned land.

Currently borough council.

In transition though. It is proposed that the freehold moves soon from the borough to the local parish council.
Probably won't make much difference.

Slightly different to some allotments. We are "field managed" and for most issues run our own affairs with a committee of about ten plot holders and four elected officers (a field manager, a shop manager, a secretary, and a treasurer), rather than being run directly by the council.

We are Metropolitan Council owned! Each site has a Secretary to act as a go between / Liaison between the council and the plot holders.

Technically they have no powers as such but tell them that! A couple of the 5 Secretaries I have been involved with over the thirty odd years I have been on the plots thought they were gods after being elected.

If only they knew that they got the job because no one else wanted it!

We have a bit of a social committee (secretary & treasurer) who organise the Christmas dinner,Open day and collect rents from those who have a raised  bed/s in the communal tunnel. The money collected is saved to maintain the tunnel e.g replacing the skin when required. We also run a raffle at the Xmas dinner for the same cause!

Me - well it is my back garden.

Before that I was on a private site. The association waited 5 years for land and with council help. The land was owned by a farmer nothing to do with the association.

I own mine too.  Bought the house because it had a ready enclosed perfect space for a veggie plot - don't always want help from the dogs and may put chucks in there one day.  Scope too for ornamentals and wildlife.

First allotment was a parish site, then a council allotment after we moved.  But it was not guaranteed to be available for a long time into the future.  It was land behind the cemetery and designed to be used for that purpose in the fullness of time, but used as allotments whilst not yet needed.

Then we moved away to the sticks, now on a third of an acre plot.  We are officially just about within the town boundaries, but well over two miles from the town centre on a long road with few houses and farmers fields behind our gardens on both sides.

Snap!

To get to my plot I have to enter it by the Cemetery Gates.

Over the years there have been numerous rumours about extending the cemetery over the allotment site but this seems to have failed as it would place the extension too close to nearby houses which contravenes Planning Laws.

Having said that; it looks to be on the cards again as this year the council has been drilling bore holes to check the 'water table' and marking trees that will need felling if the project goes ahead!

Rumour has it they are going to use the area where we park our cars which is further away from the houses as a 'Children's Cemetery'  so it looks a bit more probable to me this time!

Me moving out on my own volition rather than being evicted might might turn out to be a good thing in the end.

Land Ownership Survey results - in descending order.....

6 Borough/Metropolitan Council
3 Own land
2 Privately owned
1 Parish Council
1 Association owned

So as I expected Borough/Metropolitan councils are the biggest player.

Small survey but I will update if more plotters add to this survey.

many thanks

An allotment association that sets a few common sense rules but pays the rent to a local farmer.

Fairly even between Private and Publicly owned land then. My feelings before this exercise was that the result would be more Council/Publicly owned land !

Do not worry, Tee Gee, sampling to estimate a proportion requires a random sample (this is not random) and a sample size of about 100 in order for the observed results to be within about + or - 10% of the true value.

Just one of nodig's bit of fun threads. The results don't mean anything much.

What we did learn that I thought interesting, was the existence of an association owned site.
