Title: Just to say hello....
Post by: Trevor_D on March 04, 2007, 07:36:27
I love the site: masses of information & bucket-fuls of humour, But somehow I just never got round to signing up. The two catalysts were a) Supersprout (see separate posting) and b) went to the allotment AGM last week and found myself on the committee. (There's a moral there somewhere!) "Help!", I thought, "This is getting serious!" So here I am.

I took up my plot(s) after my second early retirement and I've been through most of what your newbies have described. And still it's hard work. And still I'm learning. But that's the fun, isn't it?

Silly questions to follow later. Must try to get to the plot to mend a wrecked fruit cage (Should have heeded the bit about heavy snow!) and I've got my first committee meeting to attend.

Hi Trevor. Well that'll learn you to attend AGMs! Welcome to the site and good luck with the committee.  I think most of us lurk for quite a while before jumping into the pool as it were. I am sure you probably have a wealth of experience to share with us and i guess all the others will be along soon to say Hi.  :)

Hi, Trevor-Whereabouts are you? I'm sometimes disappointed that we don't have any kind of society/committee, but on the other hand I'd probably end up volunteering, so maybe it's a good thing- more time for digging!

Hello,

Welcome to A4all, it is a wonderful site as you have discovered with lots of lovely people with such a varied expertise that there is always someone who can answer queries or chat about whatever you like, it is brilliant. :)

Good luck with mending your fuit cage in this rain....

T.

Hi Trevor, It is nice to meet you, and I am glad you have finally popped in to say Hello! Well done you for volunteering for the committee at the AGM.  I do hope the other committee members are vibrant and go ahead people  ;)
It will be good to be part of the decision making process on your site though. I think you are always learning when it comes to gardening, so good luck with your plot and your poorly fruit cage, hope you  manage to get it fixed. busy_lizzie

What a welcome - thanks all.

Rain started only a few minutes after the meeting did, so I think nothing gets done at the plot today! I'm in Northwood (north-west London, LB of Hillingdon). We're actually an independant site, not a council one, hence the committee: we're completely self-financing and have to deal with everything from paying the rent to maintaining the boundary fences. (Not sure what we've taken on really! OH has also been hi-jacked onto the committee.)

As for pictures: not sure how to do that yet.... And you're certainly not going to get one of the fruit cage till it's up again! (I suppose I could do a "before & after"....)

Hi Trevor - welcome to the happy family of A4A.

So, you are in Northwood, are you? I grew up in Harefield - just around the corner, small world  :). I've ended up in the south-west but that little corner of Middlesex is still really 'home' for me  8).

Harefield's only a few minutes drive away Tricia. My son & his mate used to walk the dogs through the woods to Harefield when they were teenagers, and he used to spend most weekends sitting by the canal fishing. I know the place quite well. (I used to go canoeing along the canal when I was at college, but that was a year or two ago now......)

Did you go to the primary school there? They've knocked the old one down; my friend Gerry, who was borough architect at the time, designed the new one.

Small world, innit?

Shock, horror  :o - so they've finally knocked that old junior school down. Not before time either. I remember when I went there during the war, the toilets were in a block about a hundred yards away from the school building. They were known as "the backs" in my day.

I was last in Harefield in 2002 when friends took me to lunch at the Fisheries Inn - except that it's now called something else, belongs to some chain or other and has totally lost its old atmosphere and charm. Hey ho! The passage of time and all that  :(.
