Mind you, mine are now taller than my runner bean poles and they were 7 foot poles, so I guess 6 foot by the time they were stabbed in the ground. Mine now have flower buds so maybe an inch or two more. Will get some photos next week - have mum over to stay so will drag her to the allotment and she can take pics of me with my sunflowers. :D

Only 4ft 6in tall and not your conventional sunflower head, but quite nice I think, even though it will not win any prizes. Never mind, better luck next year :D

I'll measure and post pics soon I promise.

Just read through this thread and decided to measure tallest of mine. Pah, a mere 2:20, but it has lovely dark orange petals.

Amazing recovery powers, Sunflowers. I've had two or three over the past 2 years that have bent over during early development - one in the pot (about 6") and one in the ground, about 2'. Looked like gonners, stems kinked badly. However, I perservered, splinted them up, gave them extra special care and attention, and both recovered to grow strong stems and healthy flowers, with a bit of a knuckle at the site of the accident.

Wot with that and the way that my skin heals even after picking blackberries I find Mother Nature truly amazing.

Can't get out of the village due to severe flooding in and around Skipton. It'll be next week before I see what my Sunny efforts have finally ended up at. Could be they've dried up in the 30c + temp over there in Belgium. Having a nice time here and not really looking forward to the 12 hour trip back there!

It took me an hour to untangle my sunflowers. This one in in the garden, I'm off to the plot in a mo to see the state of things down there. The sunflower in the pic is 3.30 Metres and goes to the top of the white stick. I'm on a chair too! It's got a large 'bud' but hasn't flowered yet.

Post by: kenkew on August 19, 2004, 09:02:31: I think a 'Well Done' to all those who had a go is in order. The past weeks have seen some pretty wierd weather. Gales, heavy rain and floods. Anyone who got a flower over 2mtrs has done a good job. (In my case it's been more luck than owt else.)
Went to the plot yesterday and I'm only telling the truth, not being a clever dick. I have one flower at 3.60mtrs and one at exactly 4metres. What might be a thought for next year would be the diameter of the flower head. Easier to measure and possibly easier for more people to have a go. Maybe also, the number of heads on a single plant?

Post by: Mrs Ava on August 22, 2004, 22:44:19: Here here! It has been fun, and for me, this has been the first time I have grown sunflowers successfully. I have been rewarded with 8 wonderful flowers, all over 6 foot tall and a couple of real whoppers. One has provided me with a gorgeous vase of flowers for my lounge as at each leaf joint it produced a baby sunflower and they all opened at the same time. Seemed criminal to leave them on the plot for the fox to enjoy and me to miss, so I cut them and they look stunning in a very tall vase I have.

I shall look forward to competeing next year, but I will try some different varieties......... ;D
