Title: Evil ba******
Post by: DocAlgae on September 12, 2005, 09:28:33
Some evil *$£*%** shot our tabby cat Louie with an airgun yesterday afternoon.  After four hours surgery, he's had his spleen removed, and holes in his kidney, stomach and intestines sorted out.  He's still alive this morning, but there's a real danger of infection and kidney failure.  The vet said she had never seen anything like it and that he must have been shot at point blank range.  What sick person would do such a thing? :'(

What a dreadful thing to do, your poor cat.  I am sending all my good wishes to you and hoping Louie makes a full recovery.  What kind of insane person can do such a thing to a poor defenseless animal!!!

A quick update for you all (and thanks for your good wishes) - he's in a pretty bad way at the moment.  His kidney function is deteriorating and the vet is most worried about the injuries to his stomach and intestines.  He won't eat (rather understandably) which is also problematic as he needs protein to start the healing process.  He looked so sad and small when we went to see him last night.  He seemed to know we were there though because he started purring.  I'm waiting for the vet to call me back at the mo to tell me how he got on last night.

Thanks for the up-date Doc.  Looks like all the positive vibes are working at the moment, fingers crossed.  Animals are amazing aren't they.  I remember when one of our dear departed dogs was very ill with a tumour on his spine.  He couldn't use his back legs, but his tail never stopped wagging as soon as he saw us.  Just broke my heart so I understand exactly what you are going through at the moment.

Have only just read this.DA, it's a terrible thing to happen but not new - we had the same thing happen to a cat many years ago because he "trespassed" into someone's garden and the perpetrator bragged about doing it!  Good thing is our cat survived and flourished tho I don't think his injuries were as serious as poor Louie's.

Thinking of you.....

Hi all.

Another update - Louie took a rapid turn for the worse yesterday morning and developed peritonitis.  His vet got him a referral to a specialist clinic and I took him there yesterday lunchtime.  Since then, he's had another two hours of surgery to repair an additional two holes in his intestines, followed by a thorough cleansing of his abdomen.  He's currently having treatment called open peritoneal drainage, where they leave his wound open for all the bad stuff to drain out.  His consultant says it's a relatively new technique that works well in cases like Louie's.  This morning I'm very pleased to say that Louie is much brighter and they're very pleased with his progress.  We're going to see him tomorrow night after he's had a bit of a chance to get over the second operation.

And we found out he was shot with a .22 pellet - these things can kill humans, let alone small defenceless felines...

Hi Doc.
Cyber hugs from all here
I have just read the thread,
how about going to your local paper and getting them to publish it step by step with photos. They should run it in the free papers and then the idiot will know what he has done to poor Louie.
Hopefull someone will know of the gun and shop him.
love to you and Louie

Doc that is so heartbreaking.  It makes me sick to think someone could be so evil as to do this to a poor  defensless animal.  What a slimeball!  Many years ago someone fired an air rifle into the back end of our cat, and he recovered well once the bullet was removed but we were lucky  it hadn't hit any vital organs. We reported the matter to the police and one came round and interviewed us about it.  They were very attentive, though never caught the person who did it.  I do hope things improve with poor Louie, cats are very resiliant, so I hope he continues to make good progress.  My thoughts are with you.  :( busy_lizzie

Hi guys - another quick update for you...

Louie was much brighter last night and even had a lick at a plate of pilchards!  They are very pleased with his progress.  This morning they phoned to say his infection has gone and he will go into surgery again this morning to have his abdomen closed up.  He was very bright and attentive and is taking a real interest in his environment.  He is in surgery at the mo so will update you all once he comes out (yet again).

The police are doing house to house enquiries, so I am very pleased with their response too.  If they catch the evil ?£$?" that did it (doubtful) then he will be charged with criminal damage and discharging a firearm in a public place.  They are doing a press release for me as well to warn other pet owners.

Keep your fingers crossed - and thanks for all the good wishes!

Post by: DocAlgae on September 16, 2005, 09:13:51
Hi guys,

Louie came through yesterday's op just fine.  He's still being fed through his stomach tube, but they hope to remove that over the weekend provided he starts eating normally himself.  We went and visited for half an hour last night and he was wearing a most fetching string elasticated waistcoat (to hold his tubes in), but managed to hobble about a little bit despite his obvious discomfort.  He's got a bit of oedema in his legs due to the lack of protein in his system, but the vets say this is quite normal and they're treating accordingly.  They're still very pleased with his progress and say that we might be able to take him home early next week! ;D

I don't know how I've missed this thread till now so I'm a bit late with my good wishes but I'm so pleased doc that Louie has pulled through.  He's one brave cat and I'm looking forward to seeing pics very soon.
I don't care who knows that I cried when I read this thread, and it makes anyone who has a cat worry, I know I do if merlin is late in of an evening.  But sadly there will always be people out there who thinks it's fine to maim or kill defenceless animals and cats are often at the top of their hate list.  It's not the guns that are the problem it's the people.
luv and very gentle hugs to Louie  :)

From absolute horror at reading your first posting, I'm so glad that I skipped to the last and read all the happier postings, that was a bit of a traumatic bit of reading. I am so glad Louie is alright.
I know how you feel. Some young lads shot my son in the leg with an air gun when he was climbing a tree in our local park. He wasn't happy to hear that the boys went to the senior school he was just about to start at in the september. how about that for being intimidated? Kids and animals ......such aworry.

Title: Re: Evil ba******
Post by: selwyn-smith on September 20, 2005, 14:35:03
sorry Aqui,
Yes our Tom is alright, this happened a couple  years ago now.
My husband was in the park and saw the kids who shot Tom come out of an old house and leg
it round the block. I was in the garden when my husband came racing through  the garden from the park jumped on his bike and shot off up the road yelling those boys shot my son! I'm in the garden wondering where is my son? And neighbours came rushing out and took up the chase too. Toms younger brother helped him home.
Husband caught up with the boys who no longer had the air rifle.
What can you do? If you thumped them you would be the one in trouble.
Funnily enough it had quite a good ending bought about by peer pressure.
Word spread like wild fire, and by the time Tom started his new school he was well known as the boy who got shot in the park! Some older girls found out who the culprits were, and they were all given such a hard time at school that eventually  they came and apologised to Tom.
How about that.

good lord - that is a dramatic story! I bet you must've been terrified hearing husband say they shot your son. Glad TOm's ok now. The other kids must think now that he's "well 'ard" being as he got shot! And extra glad the culprits got their come-uppance (never sure how to spell that). 8)

Afternoon guys - another update for you all (photos will follow once I've bought a new card reader!)

Louie had his stomach tube and stitches removed last Friday, so he is now a fully-discharged semi-bald cat!  He's doing all the things he used to like leaping onto windowsills, attempting to kill me on the stairs, hanging off the light switch to the bathroom, etc., etc.  Only trouble is he is now trying to escape the house, but we're not letting him out now.  Hopefully he'll forget he used to be able to go out soon.

Anyway, I promise I'll post piccies soon!

I'm glad to hear that Louie is back to his former self and can't wait to see pictures of him.

I'm sure he will get used to the idea of being a housecat, my boyfriends parents decided to start keeping their cat indoors after he was beaten up once too often by another cat. He seems to be coping fine with his new lifestyle.
