We had such a good time last year in our yearly pilgrimage to Birmingham? If betty will have us??

I would love another get-together. Two dates that would be ideal for me are Sunday 12th July or any day on the weekend of 18th/19th July. John and I will be in Birmingham for a Diabetics forum group meeting on 11th July so we can once more bring our caravan and spend another week or so exploring the delights of Birmingham and the surrounding countryside.
Unfortunately, I will not be available if our meet is in June. However, I have been fortunate enough to attend the two meetings we have held so far and don't want to dictate when we meet if the dates are not suitable to everyone else.

I always enjoy it. I'm in.
The 18/19th July would be perfect for me. I have to escape the Fairford Airshow. Hate the noise, with the Red Arrow and maybe two or three other display teams coming in the back door and out of the front. For several days. And putting coloured dye all over your washing.

The Diabetics group meeting that I was going to attend in Birmingham has now been moved to Saturday 18th! :BangHead:
Sunday 19th though would now be a better date for John and I at Walsall Allotments but I suppose it really depends on whether Betty would be available on a Sunday and what the rest of you feel about it.
Having it on a Sunday would mean that Pescador could join us too.

Could you please confirm where you are? For some reason, I thought you lived north west of Birmingham but looking on your profile, you seem to be in the south east near Solihull and just off the M42. We were going to stay at a caravan site near Tamworth this year but if no-one else lives or passes by where you live, we could always pick you up and take you home.

My mother has 70'th birthday coming...and that date is very close to it..we've been warned that whole family lot may come over here to celebrate.. :BangHead:..which would through some 'spanners' to the plan.
So...I'm kind of dangling here in back round until I know more what is going to happen.
I would much rather see allotments than play 'hotelier' for a week.. :angel11:

I thought it was me that normally gets lost somewhere in Birmingham. Last year with Chriscross plus sat nav managed to arrive intact. So impressed now got my own mobile phone. Works very well until you loose the signal. The known world ends somewhere near Warminster.

Just thought I would put a little reminder about our get-together on Sunday 19th July at Walsall Road Allotments
in Perry Barr, Birmingham.
This will be the third year at our site so I suppose we must be doing something right! :icon_cheers:
It's good to see that many of the 'regulars' are coming back, and it would be lovely to see some
newbies too.
We are quite a large site with plenty of room for parking and flat roadways suitable for mobility scooters
and wheelchairs. There are grassed areas where we can have our picnic, or plenty of space inside if
the weather is bad. We have a kitchen for hot drinks, and the all-important toilets.
We start at about 12 and finish around 5 ish. We all bring some food to share, but hot drinks are provided
by the allotments.
It's a good opportunity to swap seeds and plants too.
Hope to see many of you this year. :happy7:

Me and Galina had a great geeky genetics "workshop" last year! I'm happy to help anyone if they have genetics questions or just want to know the basics - I can't call myself an expert but hopefully I can be helpful!

If you remember, there was a speaker at the Barnsdale get-together in 2007. I personally found it a waste of time and money. I couldn't hear what he was saying for a lot of the time and when I got within earshot, I can't say I learnt anything.
I would much rather hear some of our own A4A members talking about something than getting someone else in. It would be interesting to hear Silverleaf telling us about her peas and how she is getting on with the project. The one thing I regretted about last year is that I didn't get a chance to have a long chat with her.

Only two months to go folks before this year's get together. J and I have already booked our caravan into a site not too far away from Walsall Allotments as it is too far for us to travel there and back in one day.
Will those members of A4A who were there last year be coming again and will anyone else be joining us this year? It really is a fun day with superb food, good company and a tour of the allotments.

Well, after a lot of to-ing and fro-ing with family holiday dates, we'll be there. It really is a great day out, and huge thanks to Betty for organising it all!

Not long now to our get together.
Goodlife, are you able to get there this year? Last year I remember you had to pick up your new dog so had to cancel, but it would be good if you could make it this year.
Gazza, you wanted to come last year but at the time, Jude was travelling up and down to Heathrow every day after your move and it would have been too tiring for her. Would you both be able to come this year? It's on the Sunday so shouldn't interfere with work though it is a long way up from Dorset.
Is anyone else able to come this year who, perhaps, hasn't been before? We are a very friendly bunch, have a great time, good food and a tour of the allotments. Betty makes us all very welcome and if its raining we can use the club house but if sunny and dry, we sit out under the trees.

I was very lucky to be given a guided tour a few years back and saw all the dyer's herbs. Really interesting, you will love seeing her plot.
And the rest of the site again. It is pretty spectacular and there is always something new to learn. Last year we were very impressed with many practical ideas, including Shirlton's way of training gooseberries. Betty's plots are always full of lush and colourful veg and flowers. Could somebody report on her amazing figs please?
Really cut up that I can't make it this year. Such a lovely bunch of people and the hostess and her helpers are special.
I wish you all a fab time and will be thinking of you. Hope the weather will be good. Say hi to N. Norman too if he is there ;) and of course the felines, especially Calico aka Psycho. :wave:
If anybody is looking for inspiration and for practical ideas, this is a first-rate place to come and learn. :sunny:

Yes, I definitely recommend it if you're on the fence about going! I had a lovely time last year and I'm sad I can't be there this year.
Everyone is really nice and it's so interesting seeing the allotments too. :)

I can't remember what time we started in the past, but how does 12.30 sound?
Our gates are open on Sunday mornings till 1pm so you can arrive whenever it's
convenient for you. However, I do have to be at a meeting on site from 11:00
till about 11:45.
Do we still need name badges, or do we all know each other now?
Is anyone coming who hasn't been before?

I should land at 12.29. will you be coming that way. Is twirly card as in "Too early" to use your bus pass, if so I have not heard that one for over 40 years- its what the Sheffield bus drivers called the Bus Pass for OAP's back then, because they tried to get on the bus in rush hour and use the pass!!

I am bringing focacia- sadly not homemade as got RSPCA dog show volunteering on Saturday, and baking the day before. But it is made by a great local baker. I might do some of Galina's wrapped curried eggs ( very cheeky but I am sure she won't mind!)

What another lovely day! A few less of us this year, Thanks so much to Betty ( and Colin) for being the gracious hosts for our meet up. I didn't take photos but hopefully there will be some photos shared. Very impressed with the train for punctuality, though whats with NO seats on the platform at Birmingham New Street!? Don't expect to see a woman having to sit on the concrete floor to feed her baby in 21st Century Britain.
Hope everyone got back home safe and sound. Harriet was a delight :wave:

I was thinking about everyone at the get together yesterday afternoon and hoping the weather was as nice as it was here. I'm glad it was and the day sounds like a great success. Looking forward to the pictures :toothy10:

I'm so glad that those who came enjoyed the day, and weren't we lucky with the weather!
Because it had rained so much in the morning I thought it would be best to have the food
inside the veranda. Big mistake. It was so hot in there that I had to stand outside to cool
down. But it was nice to be able to walk round the site in the sunshine. The time seemed to
pass too quickly and I'm afraid I didn't take many photos apart from these two. The man
nearest the camera on the left is my husband Colin, it was the first time he has been to one
of our get-togethers because he is usually in Sicily at this time. Harriet couldn't wait to meet
the cats and luckily Red Fred was on my plot and was quite happy to be stroked while
he ate some treats. Harriet was such a good little girl, she is a real credit to Louise and Paul.

Sorry to be late in posting but John and I have just got back from Birmingham today. We stayed for a week and made a holiday of it but didn't have Wi-Fi in the campsite where we were staying.
We really enjoyed Sunday and would like to say a big thank you to Betty for organising it all. Thanks too for all those members that came along and bought such delicious food. It was so good to see everyone again and to have another look around the well tended allotments. I was pleased to learn how flax was grown, treated and taken out of the stalk to produce such a silk like thread for spinning. I was amazed when I saw the jumper the lady had knitted using the flax. Her talk on plants used for dying was very interesting too.
Thanks again, Betty, for putting up with us all. It was a very enjoyable day.
