Title: What a flaming night!
Post by: posie on March 23, 2009, 04:21:48
Having spent a nice day with my family, dug over a patch and put some spuds in.  Was too tired to cook, so took 1 son with me to McDonalds drive thru.  On the way home, got hit from behind whilst I was edging out of a junction.  My son was fine thank god.  But because of degenerative disc disease, they bloody cut me out of my car!  Ended up with no roof, no boot, no doors and no windscreen.  Then they cut my back seats out!  And to top it all off, whilst strapped into the trolley thing in ambulance, the clips that hold the thing in place whilst it's in transit, failed and I ended up sliding round the bloody thing and nearly ended up going out of the back doors!!!  Thankfully no more damage done to my spine, but a very nasty case of whiplash.  It's a good job I've got a sense of humour!

Always wanted a convertible and a panoramic windscreen lol.  I'm so sore today it's horrendous, Sam's starting to feel it now, I just thank god that Jack was ill or I'd have had them both in the car and in the back seat which took most of impact.  Spent most of day on phone trying to sort it all out, should have a courtesy car by end of week, the car claim should be fairly straight forwards, personal injury will probably take a while.  Still, it could have been a hell of a lot worse, they weren't kidding when they said junk food is bad for your health!  :)

Not sure what to do about ambulance, it was an equipment fault, not the paramedics, they were all fantastic.  I'll think about that when I feel like my body actually belongs to me I think.

Just read this Posie . Hope you soon start feeling less sore. Thank God you and your son have not got more serious injuries. Take care.
I agree the personal injury claim will take quite a long time, I think my daughter finally got her claim agreed about 8 months after the accident.
Sending you best wishes.

Thanks Lorna.  My mum took me to Morrisons today and someone reversed into back of her car - with me in it! It's official I am cursed.  >:(  Thankfully just a slight nudge but was enough to send me into hysterics - god it's only Tuesday and I'm sick of this week already!

Lol - well I'm taking the crash as one, the flying around the ambulance as the second and the bump in mums car as the third!!!  Trying to take it easy, but I have to say it's soooo not in my nature lol.  Don't think I'll be doing any digging any time soon however.

As for the Mucky D - well my son ended up covered in 3 large cokes with ice and the rest has probably fed the rats at the scrappies!  Gutted - I was starving!

Fantastic - Tommy Cooper and Lee Evans are my absolute favourites.  I actually saw that Lee Evans show live and I ached for days afterwards from laughing so much.

Have no choice but to take it easy now, on that much pain killers that I can't even speak for most of day let alone move.  This'll make you laugh though, Ambulance Trust rang me after I made a complaint and told me that they had no record of my "incident" and was I sure that it happened on Sunday, they have no reports of defective equipment and to be honest sounded like they doubted the whole thing happened at all!!!!!!!!!  Took them 5 hours to find it eventually - doesn't give you much confidence really does it?!

Now I'm really cheesed off.  Went to GP today cos pain in lower back not getting better, turns out I have a "wrenched" coccyx that's now misaligned and needs urgent physio to get it manipulated.  Feeling very fed up now and sick of popping pills.  I now have to use lidocaine patches on top of the massive doses of painkillers and I'm still trying to write my dissertation.  I know there are people in a lot more pain than I am, but I'm feeling decidedly sorry for myself today.   :'( :'( :'(

Well I was going to the cinema tomorrow, but I'm not allowed to.  Also received a call from Casualty department to say that they've found more problems with my spine in the xray taken after the accident, waiting for them to speak to spinal team and get back to me.  Think I should have stayed in bed today.

The call from casualty has just thrown me completely.  They're not sure at the moment whether it's an old problem (although I certainly haven't had any pain from it) or whether it was caused by the accident.  I think I've just about reached breaking point now, had enough thrown at me in last ten days to last me a lifetime.  Somehow I have to find a way to write my disseration, an essay and sit through 3 2 and a half hour exams and so far the Uni are not being very helpful.  Sorry for moaning, just a bad day I guess.  :(

You moan away Posie, you've got a lot on your plate, if worse comes to worse couldn't you defer and get your dissertation in next year, know its not ideal but you have to look after your health first.

Unfortunately my Uni is not the caring sharing type as I've found out.  I'm trying to get the disability team to call me so I can at least get some decent seating for exams, but nobody returning my calls.  Apparently what'll they do is look at my past work, my attendance and award a degree from that, but to be honest I don't want them to do that, my dissertation is the one piece of work that will pull my averages up to ensure that I definitely get a 2:1, I don't want to risk a 2:2.  I'll find a way round it, just gotta pull myself together a bit first.

That seems really harsh of them  >:(

Good luck with it all, we are here for you so keep posting.  You might find theres one really helpful person at uni who'll push for you, you just gotta find them.

Take care

Yep glad insurance is sorted and Uni playing ball.  Had call from casualty doctor today to confirm that spinal team want to see me next Wednesday.  Apparently another bit of my spine has collapsed and they don't understand why I have the existing problem with my neck/upperback at my age (35) so they want to investigate for underlying causes.  hey ho.  :-\

hope the pain's subsided, we had a car crash 10 years ago, I was awarded 75.00 as my condition was pre-existing  ::)
I did, however get paid for 12 weeks off work as I was in a  collar.

Hi again, reading about your P.I claim, the same happened to me, didnt have a crash but was injured at work and as the claim went on I didnt get a penny as I suffer from ankylosing sponylitis which affects every part of the body and as it was an existing condition thats how they got out of it. hope you have better luck with yours!. take care.

Pain still pretty bad, got lidocaine patches now which help a bit.  Only pre-existing stuff I have is at neck level, never had any problems with rest of back until accident.  Will know more Wed hopefully.  As for personal injury claim, I'm more relieved that car insurance sorted, not really comfortable with whole personal injury thing.  And yes I will be ordering in next time!

Dissertations are bloody hard mental and physical work, are you sure you are up to that at the moment? I know the temptation to get it all over and done with is very strong, but it may be more annoying if you do it and don't do yourself justice. I'm not sure sitting for hours on end typing will do your back any good at the moment, and you really do have enough on your plate don't you! :-\

I had a back injury at work and was off for 6 months, luckily I haven't had too many problems since but I am always very wary now with lifting etc. These things have a habit of taking time to sort, so don't be hard on yourself, if you are hurting you can't ignore that and carry on tempting as that may be!

I would be tempted to put as much as you possibly can on the back burner (no pun intended!) until you are feeling much better, then you will feel mentally and physically more prepared to do your best in the exams. Life eh! Hopefully it will be on an uphill climb soon..... ;D

Well yesterday I had my woe is me, the whole world is against me so I'm just going to lie here and cry duvet day.  Today I got up with all guns blazing, no stupid car crash or dippy stupid driver not paying attention is going to cost me my degree state of mind, a stomach full of pills and hit the dissertation full on.  I'm now just 2k off having the 1st draft done.  Did a very stupid thing and kind of bent from middle down to stretch and boy did that fracture have something to say about it!!! Went a funny shade of green and had to lie down for an hour!  Have probably overdone it today, but I feel better mentally for having accomplished something even at a shuffle pace, will take it a bit easier tomorrow.  Thanks again guys.

Hey Posie thats brilliant - good for you.  Obviously you don't want to over do it but sometimes pushing yourself on is the best way.  You certainly sound stronger mentally which is a good part of the battle.  Good luck with the diss, first draft of these things is always the hardest bit of the hill to climb!

Keep positive  ;D

Blimey, you did well getting so much done, how many words is your dissertation? It took me two weeks of pain to do 5000 words for my latest assignment, and as usual I had to cut it back to keep within the +/- 10%.... :-\
Title: Re: What a flaming night!
Post by: posie on April 14, 2009, 16:09:20
Dissertation is 10k.  I'm still about 2k off it though as I paid dearly for that big push.  Trying to do some today but the concentration level is non-existent at the moment, tablets make me feel like a flippin zombie and don't seem to be doing a great deal for the pain, although my coccyx is a lot easier, it's the fracture that's causing the most problems now.  Very weird wandering around knowing that your spine is fractured.  Solicitors are practically rubbing their hands with glee now, wish I felt the same.  Hey ho, life goes on.

You look after yourself, you know what it's like, sometimes you are in the mood and can type for ages, it just flows....other times, you have to force it and end up editing half of it away afterwards! Do as much as you feel able to...have they given you more time because of your injury?

Special circumstances committee don't sit until 21 April, which is 10 days before deadline, so just carrying on with it at the moment, because they are notoriously obnoxious.  I can ask for an extension but that may delay my graduation to December, which is something I want to avoid.  I intend to ask them to take into consideration my health issues and medication effects whilst completing disseration, essay and revising for the 3 exams.

Hmmm  Cardiff University......sympathetic - nope that doesn't sound familiar! lol

I know it can be done and I know I'll get there in the end. Just not today. Today is tired day.  I suspect I'm suffering from acute withdrawal symptoms from gardening, any cures? Preferably that don't mean rescuing all the bargain basement flowers from Tesco which seems to be a hobby of mine at the moment! I've at least had my exam dates now so can arrange things around them if need be, I'll bloody well take them from my hospital bed via video link if I have to!!!

1066 - my mate is going to read it for me, because I know I always read what I think I've written!

Looking forward to getting it bound and submitted now, that's if my supervisor ever decides to get back to me  >:(

Just been to Lush, so I intend to spend several days in the bath with every possible product in it!

It sure is! Got my new car today, it's an automatic astra and apart from a problem with dodgy valve, which the dealer sorted on the spot, it's fab.  Nice and easy to drive and the seat moulds to my back which is good.  Back was feeling better today and yesterday, then I carried the shopping, now it's killing me again.  Obviously not as good as I thought it was! Hey ho.  :)

Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone know how to lift curses, cos I'm sure I'm under one! The dodgy valve is back and the car cut out on me going round a corner, now has to go back to the dealer on Monday!  >:(

On a plus note, the dissertation has been bound and submitted a week ahead of schedule.  So that's one less thing to worry about.  :)

Well I've had another xray today and it wasn't good.  My spine has collapsed further, have to go back in 2 weeks time for another one, potentially a brace and I'm still waiting for mri scan to find out why it's deteriorating as fast as it is.  I swear if one more doc prods me in the fracture and asks me if it hurts I will kill them - yes it bloody hurts! Funny that!  >:(

Thanks manics.  Car going back Wed, valve was replaced with 2nd hand one which is doing same thing, fair play to the dealer though he's been no trouble getting it sorted, wish there were more car dealers as honest as him.

As for the back, it's the frustration I find hardest to deal with.  I've missed a good chunk of planting time, can't dig, can't really do much of anything to be honest.  I'm not the kind of person to sit still, it bores me.  Her solicitors are still ignoring mine, so no liability admitted for personal injury which is really winding me up.  But hey ho life goes on, some days are ok, some days are pants.  The really ironic thing is 3 days after accident my physio therapy referral kicked in for the neck problems lol and now they can't touch it until rest of it sorted!  Joys of NHS.  Had reply from my complaint to ambulance service, turns out that it wasn't equipment failure that caused me to go careering around the ambulance in transit, but dozy paramedic hadn't actually fastened it in  >:( >:( >:(

Hi Posie

Just spotted this thread, what an awful time you've had.

Just keep going forward that's what I say, and although it will be slow, one day you will wake up feeling better with a 2:1 and a big sense of achievement.

Sending you hugs and healing vibes - was about to suggest sending you plants for the windowsill but not sure how I would post them  ;)

Aw that's very kind of you Jayne, unfortunately I only have one dog proof windowsill!  I have 2 springers who seem to think that if it's not theirs then it's fair game!!!  One of them insists on eating my lily every year and is sick for 3 days every time - springers are most certainly intelligent yet desperately lacking in common sense!!!  I managed to do a little in the garden today, just tidied it up and put some marigolds and things in, boys did all the lifting and sweeping.  And today we cleaned out the lottie shed (which someone has broken into and stolen my incinerator  >:( >:( >:( ) and handed the keys back, was a bit of a sad moment  :(  Of course all this was total procrastination because i know this essay is going to bore me rigid - nothing like leaving a 4k essay to the last minute lol

Thanks to you all again.  Can't tell you how much better I feel with all the support I've had on here, ever since I've joined, but particularly over the last few weeks, there have been days when I've thought of just giving everything up and moping round but the posts on here have brightened me up and allowed me to wallow when I need to and kick myself up the butt when necessary.  :) :)

Just a quick update before I pass out for the day, somehow I managed to get the essay done and in on time  ;D.  But boy am I paying for it!  Still, least I can take a couple of days rest now before I start revising.

Yuck, I have become addicted to the painkillers, didn't realise Tramadol was so addictive until after not taking them for 2 days I woke up this morning swearing blind I had flu.  Just done some research and yep, all symptoms point to withdrawal from Tramadol.  Back down to the docs for me I think.  :(

Posie take care, coming off pain killers can be really nasty (as you're finding out!)  Is there anyway you can keep on them until you've finished your exams? That way you could deal with 1 thing at a time?

I was prescribed tramadol in A&E for arthritis pain, I couldn't cope with feeling so 'fogged', my doc said some can cope and others can't..do what's best for you, posie..last time they tried to give me meptid(morphine) with a morphine drink between  :o
I'd rather have the pain and paracetemol  ;D

I seem to be able to function reasonably well on them, until later in the evening when they do wipe me out a bit.  But the dependency thing is worrying.  Got another xray tomorrow so we'll see what that shows up and then make some decisions from there I think.

My Aunt had acupuncture as she had arthritus in her skull and neck and after all the tablets she took and weight she lost, it was the only thing that worked.  She's gone from barely able to move and being violently sick when she did, to almost full mobility, walking and driving again.  And she was difficult to convince on that, she's always been a stickler for conventional medicine, but she's definitely a convert now.

Well the fracture hasn't moved any more, so the consultant doesn't want to see me now until I've had the mri scan which is on 27th, what will happen after that is anyones guess!

Well I'm more livid than I ever thought possible.  I received a letter today from the keystone cops (no offence to any officers on here, but you'd have to live here to experience it and I've had no positive experiences).  The driver who totalled my car, fractured my spine and injured my son is to face no action, yep that's right, no action.  She gets to walk away scot free with just a few extra quid to pay on her premiums.  Meanwhile I face an uncertain few months, not knowing whether or not I can work and not knowing what the hell is going on with my back.  I am crying with rage right now.  >:( >:( >:(

Thanks 1066.  They didn't even speak to the other driver until 10 days ago (2 months after the accident) and then only because I rang to get further information from them.  She apparently claimed that she was driving considerably under the speed limit as she was approaching the junction - if that's the case and she was driving so slowly, then how in hells name did she manage to "not see" my car??!! I know it's not productive, but I am SO angry right now I can't think straight.  And to top it all I have an exam on Friday.

I presume you've got your insurance guys on the go - I'm sure they'll make mince meat of her claims, the police can't be bothered by the sounds of it, but I bet you the insurance guys will be! Or is that another can of worms?? (hope not!)

I hope you can get it a bit sorted in your head so you can concentrate on your exam on friday - and good luck for Friday

Her insurance company has admitted liability finally, so she hasn't got a leg to stand on where the personal injury claim is concerned.  I think I'm just gobsmacked at the level of sheer incompetence displayed by my local police force, like I said, it's not the first time, and I doubt very much if it'll be the last.
Title: Re: What a flaming night!

So does that mean she's told 1 thing to the insurance and another thing to the police?? Or as you say the police just don't want to be involved, in that case I'd definitely complain!

Title: Re: What a flaming night!
Post by: posie on June 03, 2009, 17:21:08
Well I would say that this is most definitely the police not being bothered.  They took two months to speak to her and that was only because I chased them up.  It's nothing new, I don't know why I'm surprised.  When I had a car broken into about 6 years ago, they asked me to drive it to them, with the door hanging off, so they could fingerprint it!  And when we called them out for the incident itself, having chased the little toerags up the road, because we couldn't say if the kids top was grey or white (it was 2am in the morning), they let him go, despite the fact that we saw him throw the stuff he used into a lane!

I am seriously considering a complaint to be honest.
