Title: Swan River Daisy
Post by: Georgie on May 19, 2008, 20:25:14
Has anyone else tried growing these plants from seed?  I got mine free with a gardening magazine and decided to give them a go.  They were sown on 5 April on a sunny window sill and they are still only about 2" (5cm) tall.  I've never know an anuual to be so slow.  Is it me?

I tried them many years ago, if I remember I had no success at all  :(

I've found many of my seedlings to be slow this year - I put it down to nerves.

LOL.   ;D

I must admit that the Heliotrope seeds you sent me are also on the slow side but I expect that with perennials.

I haven't grown them for a bit but this is how I grew them when I did; http://tinyurl.com/692rgs

I think the 'slowness' of growth is mainly down to light levels, they have been somewhat low up until recently.

I have noticed mine have grown more in the last 7-10 days with the sunlight and longer days.

So it is a fairly natural thing, the only cure is putting them where they get the best light, but there lies the problem!! all plants want this so it is a case of priorities.

Thanks for that TG.  They have a prime spot so I guess I'll just have to be patient.

Shall we have a race then Greenstar?  First one to get a flower gets to choose the forfeit.   ;D

Mine aren't even that big, Amazin.  Think I might be about to lose out here...That's assuming they're still there and haven't been eaten by the slimey ones.  Must go and check them in the morning.

Progress report time.  Mine have been moved into the mini greenhouse.  The biggest is now about 4" tall I guess and I have just pinched it out.  At this rate I reckon they might be in flower at Christmas.   ;)

Ooh - mine have got buds!  But then they seem to have had buds for a wee while now...so we'll wait and see if they ever flower.

This has got to be the slowest race ever!

Just back from the plot, and I have a flower - nearly.  It's sort of half unfurled - looks pretty, but not really very remarkable yet.  I'm hoping they'll be a bit more noticeable when they're properly out.  The ones that are flowering are in pots - the plants that I put in the border are still at the budding stage.

Do I win?  :)

Not until we see a picture to prove it.   ;) ;D

I suppose it is time that I started posting pictures on here.  Just have to find out where the five year old David Bailey has hidden the camera, and then buy new batteries cos he'll have been taken five hundred pictures of his feet.

It's either his feet or our bellies - I think I'd rather he stuck with his feet!

Still can't find the camera...

Greeted me when I came home from work yesterday.

Not the best of specimens, but it's a flower at last, and plenty more on the way.

I'm thinking not - I have lots more flowers but they're all like Ninnyscrops', and all the same colour too.  I was expecting lots of loveliness and various shades of pink and purple, but I've ended up with a very poor midget michaelmas daisy that seems to add as a slug lure.

Not bothering next year *humph*  :P
