Title: Calor gas heater
Post by: northener on January 30, 2009, 09:05:11
Going to be starting a few things off after the next cold snap. Was thinking about a calor gas heater for the greenhouse, the type that folk use at home. Seen one in the local charity shop £15. Any thoughts? anyone done the same?

I would have thought it far too expensive to run and possibly too hot for basic needs.

too expensive to run, as eristic says!!
any Co2 would be a bonus for the plants, though! ;)

I also agree with it being to expensive also another bad point it takes the moisture out of the air.

On low i'm sure a bottle would last 3months easy,so long as i turned it on at dusk and off at dawn(ish). I need to do something because the wifes warned me already about the windowsills. I've tried parafin that was too expensive.

A 15kg bottle burning on low for 6-8 hours a night lasts about a fortnight. Current cost of gas is <>£27. Until my radiators are fitted, I rely on one of these to heat my study room/office.

In the corner of my greenhouse I have one of the plastic mini greenhouses with the plastic cover and 5 shelves, about 15-20 quid. I put all my seed trays in there and have a 586 Cold Frame Heater in the bottom of that. It keeps it well warm enough and a gallon lasts literally yonks.

It'd cost me a fortune to heat the whole greenhouse, a 6x12 lean-to that's 8 foot at it's highest point.
