Title: Squashkin from Marshalls
Post by: Suzanne on January 16, 2009, 16:17:20
I saw these online @ Marshalls seeds, so bought some. They are a cross between Crown Prince and Butternut, which sounds promising as CP is my favourite squash and I also like butternuts.

Is anyone else growing them?

Which qualities are they supposed to have inherited from the parents?

However, last week i received an order from Marshalls that wasn't mine.

When i called Marshalls they told me to keep the lot ;D ;D ;D

Dense, sweet flesh and long keeping. The piccy shows a butternut coloured squash in the shape of a crown prince.

I received my seeds approx. 7 days after order, which is about average for Marshalls.

There were only 6 seeds in the packet - bit of a rip off in proce. I sowed 4 - 2 to a pot and 3 germinated. Plants look very healthy and are now out under bell cloches along with the other squashes.

So far I am not impressed in comparison to Crown prince , butternuts and others I grow (this year, baby blue hubbard, triamble, potimarron, marina di choggia, musquee de provence, bush buttrercup and kuri), mainly as the price per seed is so high - but we will see.

So far, I am pleased with the progress of my Squashkin plants. 3 plants from 3 seeds, growing and fruiting well. Very much faster to set fruit than Butternuts, which is important this far North.

What happened with them all?

I have been disappointed with yeild (9 small fruits - 1-2lb each from 2 plants) and the flavour. No where near as good as Crown Prince. Also don't store too well. I am sending a note to Marshalls as they are a half decent company and I have taken part in trials for them before.

I am not growing them again this year.
