Title: Melons or lack offI
Post by: AlanP on August 03, 2014, 21:53:52
I have 11 melon plants in very large pots, there are hundreds of male flowers but only a very rare female flower, I have managed to hand pollinate one rare female flower and now have one melon from 11 plants.
Any ideas why there are so few female flowers.

Alan

Has anyone tried the Minisotta midget melon? It grows about the size of an tennis ball I believe, fruits early & is quite prolific.

There are always more male flowers than female flowers on my squash plants and it seems the females show up later always. I wonder if yours are possibly too crowded in pots and whether that might make a difference. (I tried to grow snowpeas in a large rusted canning pot this year and was underwhelmed with pods; won't do that again.) Maybe you could grow your melons up a trellis next year if space is limited.
