Hi there, I have registered with this site because I wanted to share your excitement! I have numerous pots of seeds on my windowsill and returned from work today to see that the onion, carrots and leek seeds have germinated - very excited!!!!

Congrats! It's always fun to see the first seedlings appear.

I have little croquet hoop leeks!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Only sown last Saturday in the conservatory - which is currently 13oC so I guess they like it! 3 days!!!

After last season, and old seed, when I got two up out of 40 in 3 weeks...  much happier.

last night i noticed 2 out of 9 sweet peas, a couple of lettuce mixed leaves and one "unknown" poking their wee heads through.

the unknown will be a complete surprise when it matures.  i just found the inner foil packet lying open at the bottom of the box and hadn't got a clue what it was.

it is a very exciting time.  roll on tomorrow when i can spend all day out in the garden, rain or shine.

A Help question!!  :-\

Having got the toms to germinate indoors n polybags, when can the polybag be a) opened and b) removed ?

And then must they go to a windowcill?   ??? :-\

I would have thought you should open it now before condensation starts to cause damping off and rots the seedlings.

I usually do seed trays on  my garden table in the utility room and they do fine.

Whereabouts are your poly bags?

grawrc - I have no heated propagator so I sat them on top of the fish tank!!  They are still tiny but will need more daylight!!

my porch is cold, but light, will it be OK for them do you think?  :-\

I'd put them somewhere that they get maximum light and try to avoid temps much below 10C (50F). If you find they're getting a bit leggy, plant them deeper each time you pot up.

I have a baby sweetpea!  First ever thing grown so dead chuffed.  They were in toilet rolls in our only slightly heated conservatory.

Ooo just been to check them (again!) and I have some marigolds up too.  Isn't it weird how you can sow a whole tray full at the same time and yet they all pop up at different rates...?

checking last year's sowing thread, i am happy to report that i didnt start sowing until the 13th march 2005. hence, whilst i congratulate all of you new mothers and fathers, i wont be starting with the seed business until i return from my winter holidays :D

please start a new 'the sowing thread 2006' - where everone can record sowings, showings and planting out times. it worked very well last year, i thought - especially as i didnt keep a record of my times  but i can now check back to it so it's all dandy :)

Well done Amanda 21!

It is always lovely to see new life popping out of the soil.  I planted sweetpeas in toilet rolls last year and they did not do that well - I thought they were more hassle than it was worth.  However, this year I will be putting them directly into the ground on 1st March - which I believe is the best time to grow them.  Also I do not have space like that - I am concentrating on planting new babies for my cottage garden this year - at the moment it closely resembles an excavation site - or is mud pit a better name?

But good luck with your bunch of new babies!!  I am sure that by next year you will be a seasoned gardener and taking your own cuttings!
