Title: Seed Beds
Post by: JimmyJames on January 07, 2008, 12:01:57
I spent last year clearing weeds and digging beds.  I have the main beds almost all dug now, and have been out and bought some seeds.

Despite the fact that all of the seeds had "Sow Direct" on the front,  many of them suggest sowing into finely raked warm moist soil, and then moving them into their 'final position' when the plants have established a bit.

I take it they are suggesting I have a seed bed - dedicated to sowing all the different seeds I have?  This isnt something I had planned, and I perhaps foolishly thought I would be sowing the seeds into their final beds.

Does this vary with each type of veg?
As you can tell im very much a novice, but would appreciate knowing if a seed bed is needed.

Im thinking I can make a raised bed with some sort of cover made of glass/plastic so the soil warms up quickly.  Would the soil need to have any specific properties or could it be regular allotment earth?

Just another job to put on the endless list I guess!

Dont worry - I just did what I should have done in the first place!  A search for "seed bed" has shown the question asked before.  I will read through the replies!
