Title: Micro leaves
Post by: Duke Ellington on June 30, 2015, 15:49:42
Can any seeds be grown as micro seeds? Just received an email from Marshalls selling a micro seed pack which includes rocket broccoli etc. the resulting seedlings can be snipped at 10 weeks and can be used in salads, sandwiches or as a garnish. I have loads of seeds and wondered if my old seeds could be used or are the Marshalls seeds/ micro seeds a special variety?

Not every seed can, but certainly all brassica (both rocket and broccoli are brassica, as you know of course).  Any turnip seed hanging around or kale or cabbage and radish are just as useful.  Any seeds that can be sprouted can also be eaten as microgreens, but you get more food value as sprouts.  Cress and mustard are the classic microgreens.

Also alfalfa, fenugreek, sunflower, and I guess many different herbs would work too.

I grew microgreens in a gutter in the kitchen one year and snipped them with scissors. Quite pleasant but I haven't bothered again. I did spot, looking into it, that carrot greens are supposedly poisonous....

Carrot leaves are edible, but some people have reactions to them.

Well I will try some regular seeds and grow them as micro salad. I have rocket, beetroot, and various cabbage seeds. I might even do some radish too.
