Title: Passata machine - get ready for new season?
Post by: tricia on May 06, 2007, 19:43:30
For anyone who is planning on buying a passata machine this year - here's a tip. I bought mine from Seeds of Italy last year. It's still in their catalogue at £24.99 plus £2.99 (7 working days dispatch)........BUT

I get the TEMPSL. catalogue each month and guess what? The self-same machine is pictured in this catalogue at £15.90 plus £4.49 delivery charge! A saving of £7.59. here is the link, www.tempsl.co.uk and the ref. number is 6621 to order online.

Why is it that soon after you've bought something you see it much cheaper elsewhere???????

Don't seem to be able to find the item without registering first. What are they like for bombarding with adverts?

You can choose not to receive any bum from them. Just make sure to tick the right boxes. I only get the catalogue by snail mail. They are also good if you need to return something. Refund, no questions asked.

Tricia,

looks like a good deal, how did you find the gadget to use ??  does it really separate the skins and seeds from the pulp, sounds too good to be true

Depending on your 'road test' report  ;) I may invest the remains of my Birthday money  ;D ;D

I borrowed my friends one last year and it was BRILLIANT !! All bar the tinyest seeds were fished out with all the skin and hard bits.  Put the pulp through 3 times and you will get all the liquid out, then you can boil it down for passata or keep going for puree - I was going to get myself one but I am very glad I waited.

Oh they are quite easy to clean too, not too much messing about !

Yes, Trif - it was SS's industrious bottling last year using her passata machine that made me decide I needed one too...............(I DO miss her  :().

This is one machine that will not remain at the back of the cupboard, but will be dusted off each tomato harvest season and the loss of Sarah will be remembered poignantly all over again.

Jeannine,

I ordered a wee slicer gadget at the same time as the Passata machine (same day as you), gadget arrived yesterday, no sign of machine yet though   ... I think it was 8 May when we ordered so we should not fret just yet, a recent Amazon book order took 30 days plus !!

xx Mikey

PS sorry to read about your Lottie getting trashed ..... it must be difficult but ignore the bu**ers and carry on  ;D

got mine yesterday Jeannine.  What a beast it is too.  Very attractive and sturdy looking.  Only had a quick glimpse before it went back in the box.  Actually it came in two very handy size boxes, which will come in very useful at somestage, or something !!!

I had started to wonder where it had got to, but I suppose it has come all the way from the Channel Isles.  Long way to swim.

Mrs KP why was it in two boxes?  Maybe there are different types [suppose there must be] but I'd only ever seen the red plastic one & mine came in one box.
Title: Re: Passata machine - get ready for new season?
Post by: MrsKP on May 20, 2007, 21:07:17
it came in an inner box that was obviously meant for it, and then the outter one was just the packing !

Of course one inside the other!  Made me giggle - silly me - I had visions of some super passata machine soooo big & with soooo many extra bits it had to be in 2 boxes - was feeling all inferior like.  ;D

New Toy .............  just shown up

Postie just delivered my 2 boxes (only one Passata machine  ;D)
well pleased nice strong piece of kit and so easy to take to bits.

Do I understand the multilingual instructions correctly, should the Toms be boiled/cooked first  ??

sorry just a simple feller' question .... we can't be excellent at everything  (wait for it ... hee hee)

Be gentle with me, old, frail, wrinkly on medication, with a desperate will to live (dangerously  ;) ;D)

Mikey,
I cut the tomatoes into quarters and partially cook them over a low heat for a few minutes then put them through the machine. Then take all the skins etc and pass them through a couple more times. That way you get all the puree and not just the watery juices.

I can't have read the instructions right when I borrowed one last year - I just cut up the toms and chucked them in, worked great!  A lot less messing about than cooking them first ......

I hope so. because the one I had before was a no cooking one and I won't use it if it is, it would make it just that bit too much of a bother for me .I am a bit nervous now as mine hasn't come yet. I was concerned about the price as the one I had before which I left overseas was ten times the amount of this one,I hope it is not flimsy ???

Don't worry Jeannine, they are well built and VERY easy to use - I ordered mine today as I have about 100 tomato plants and can't keep borrowing my friends !! How long ago did you order yours?

Well my machine arrived today but very quickly was bundled out of the house and into the garage by John, because as soon as I opened the box I became breathless and when he looked it has a black rubber base which I was reacting to.  So I don't know where we go from here. XX Jeannine

Post by: MrsKP on May 26, 2007, 05:35:44
ooooh !  what a shame.  Can John remove it and replace it with something else to hold it firm.

Is this an allergy you've know about ??

 :o
Title: Re: Passata machine - get ready for new season?
Post by: Jeannine on May 26, 2007, 09:43:29
Yes I have a severe latex allergy which of course includes natural rubber like tires etc.

John will have a look at it when I am not around,he may be able to dismantle it and scrub the soak and scrub the rubber. If he can get rid of any rubber dust on it ???

I have a couple of very old things in the house made of latex, a couple of squeaky toys that belonged to my kids that sit on a shelf, bought before the allergy became a big problem, they don't seem to be a issue but a packet of balloons would set me off.

But then if the old  latex starts to break down, like Dunlopillow does when very old the dust would get in the air and  probably mean trouble.

Jeannine thats awful.

Might be worth calling the company and see what the base is made of and see if they offer an alternative?

Good luck with jerry-rigging a solution.

No just latex, I can't even read the brochure cos it is smelly too John said and it isn't worth risking it. If I react to it much , it means I have to use my  epipen shot in the leg and then hospital , not risking that on my half term break.  It is definatley rubber cos I don't react to the synthetics.XX Jeannine

Jeannine, what a pain in the bum.

The black base is the suction pad that holds it to the work top - the one I borrowed did not suck on brilliantly and I had to hold it down anyway - maybe you will be able to use your machine without the base if John can remove it and clean the rest of the machine?

The other option is to have a tomato slave and keep the machine away from you .....

Hope you find a solution.
