cherry orchards, stoke road SLOUGH!!

I have to drive to Slough once a week to visit our head office.  I pass an allotment on my way into Slough on the Uxbridge Road and often think how I'd much rather be on my plot rather than be heading in to work followed by another 3 hour drive round the M25 home.

Is this your site ?

Post by: RosieMcPosie on September 21, 2007, 11:07:19
no, those allotments aren't council property and the land is rented out by a private owner, for nearly twice the rent i pay. it's a lovely site though, some beautiful allotments there! i'm literally a 2 and a half minute drive from that site.

Hi Crystalmoon,

Probably not a good idea to put your e-mail on the internet. I suggest you  ask Dan to delete your message and send your e-mail to Barbara by PrivateMessage (PM) - just click on the picture of a scroll under the message sender's name or avatar.

PS I was brought up near Hamstreet but have just hit 30 years in London

Hi all - new member here.  Hope I'm okay to join here - I'm not on an allotment but thoroughly enjoy my rather good sized vege garden that I have out back of the house.  I've been a member of another forum for a while, and was very good but now being overrun by one poster with what must be mush for brains - a bit of a p*sstwat me thinks :)  So looking for somewhere else that can be helpful where we can exchange information on our gardens/allotments.  We're in Kent by Dartford - and while there are a few allotment areas around us - I hope my back garden interests will be welcomed here :)

Brand new bramble infested plot.

Teston, Kent

Are there any still available? I am in Maidstone, looking for an allotment. What street are they on, if I may ask, so I can "Google Earth" them?

I am looking high and low and hoping to find some space!

Thank you!

I've just got my allotment!!!

I had to leave my old one behind when we moved to Hastings, and after being on the waiting list for almost a year, I've been offered one - and it's grassed over but that's all, so I'm really excited.

Everyone thinks I must be mad, because I've moved house, had a baby and got a 2-year-old and a full-time job. So I thought about turning the allotment down - but of course I didn't!

I know you lot will understand why.

Well, we went on a wait list in March, were 8th on the list, and were lucky enough last night to be able to go get the key to the gate, and be assigned our allotment :)  I'm really pleased - heading down there in a little while to do some digging over, taking a picnic dinner, a bottle of wine and some chairs.  No sheds allowed on the site so as to keep the area 'green' looking.
Our site is in Meopham, Kent.  It's a lovely looking site - some very very well kept allotments there!

Small site in Basingstoke within walking distance of home (5mins). Got the key in Oct08 after a three year wait and both spends ages down there. Highlight was walking down on Christmas Day to pick Brussels (rubbish crop but we had enough), dig up the last few carrots, a swede  and a parsnip. We then had our on potatoes roasted with some of the broad beans from the freezer.

Both spend far too long down there but love it

I'm just across the thames at Canewdon in Essex.

Put my name down in May, got my plot 3 weeks ago, covered in 3ft weeds. have now got it cleared with potatoes, tomatoes, onions, beans, garlic and salad leaves. Had been growing from seed but when plot came up early i did cheat and by a couple of plants from a garden centre to get it started.

Looking forward to when i can start picking fresh produce.

Welcome to A4A, Robthebob - what's your new plot like ???

Hi there...just popped down there; it has been rotovated by the council (didn't get much of a choice in that unfortunately) so it is a brown half plot at the mo 4paces by 23paces.  I do seem to have got a decent plot though as I have a water trough and tap on the corner which is handy and I found out that there are toilets on site...always useful  ;)  The soil seems nice and humusy although there is PLENTY of vegetation chopped up into it so I suspect I'll have plenty of days clearing ahead of me  ::)

Hi and welcome Robin, make sure you dig out all them chopped up roots and weeds, or you will be fighting them regrowing for the next 2 years.
Like you, our council rotovated it without me knowing and it took myself, my Dad and my mate weeks to dig all the roots out. Mark out a smallish area and dig it over, throwing out the roots, a bit each day and you will soon get on top of things, burn all the roots on Guy Fawkes and you will have some decent ash to dig back in to your beds.   ;D ;D ;D

Angmering Village, West Sussex.
We've been on the list for nearly a year and we got the call last week to come and look at a vacant plot. Just waiting on the paperwork now.  :)

I've been reading these forums for months and it seemed like the right time to register now that we've secured an allotment.

Congratulations on your new allotment, but beware allotments can take over your life and you get withdrawal symptons if you can't visit.  No holidays can be taken in the growing season.  Good luck, enjoy and you will meet some very friendly, generous people.

Thank you all for the welcome. I can't wait to get stuck in to both the allotment and these forums.
I worked a vegetable and fruit garden for an elderly gentlman for about 8 years under strict instruction. I'm looking forward to doing my own thing now and experimenting. And having moved down from the high ground of the Scottish Borders to the low lying south of England, I'm anticipating enjoying a growing season of more than four weeks!

Welcome, Phil and congratulations. It's going to be great having a plot of your own. You're going to be going mad planning this winter!

beware allotments can take over your life and you get withdrawal symptons if you can't visit.

I have that! I get weird sort of flashbacks as if I've taken psychadelic drugs - when I'm in the middle of a load of paperwork or answering emails or something. I get a sniff of freshly dug earth or a vision of the plot.

Is that weird?

I'm suffering now, because I've got a bad back and couldn't go to the allotment at the weekend. Am worried it won't be better by this next weekend either.   :(

Hi everyone,

After 3 years waiting, we finally got our mitts on our allotment in Winnersh, Berkshire!

Got the letter last Friday, started digging on Saturday, sowed garlic and red onions on Sunday - a good day in the biodynamic calendar, apparently. Found out on Tuesday that the garlic was meant to be planted in cloves, not bulbs... have to wait for another biodynamically happy weekend day to dig up said garlic and re-plant as cloves. We have a LOT to learn  ;D

Hope there's someone nearby who is up for doing some seed swapping; I'm going to explore this site thoroughly over the next few weeks :)

Well, they're going to have to actually write instructions on the packets rather than general diagrams if they want me to be able to grow sensibly!! Stoopid manufacturers. Aren't they supposed to assume all customers are dumb, and those that know what they're doing can ignore the instructions  ;D

Thanks for the welcome, am off to investigate the Wikki button.

Having joined A4A very recently I’ve dropped in to say hello to my neighbours in the south east. Also a special wave along the coast and across the Downs to everyone in Sussex like me.

B.A.H.A is where I am when I can get there weather and commitments permitting. I have one and a half plots and love them. The main plot has been in the family for a little more than 50 years. Does that count as a heritage site?  ;D

Hi pigeonseed.  :)  I'm further west

BAHA = Bognor Allotment Holders Association

The plot was my fathers when we first moved south. I was about 6 when he took it on. Over the years I helped out now and then. When my father was ill I offered more help until eventually he was sowing seeds at home in his greenhouse and I was planting them out and running the plot.

Now that he's 96 he continues to offer advice and, once in a while, is able to go and view the plot. At other times I use his tv to show photos of how things are going on "our" plot.
Team work.  :)

Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me..

I've been wracking my brains as to what to get my mum for her 50th birthday! (Monday) although she is away until tues, but I'm at uni so have a little longer to sort it out!

After thinking long and hard (I'm blonde, so this occassionally hurts... Nothing to do with my science degree..) and then I remembered she's always wanted an allotment! And she is on the waiting list - unfortunately, I have no contacts who work in the council who could push her up the list, so to speak!
I rang up today, and she is on the waiting list for Woodlands road, Gillingham. Beacause she lives in Darland, this is the closest plot this is the list she gets allocated to .. although I'm sure she'll be prepared to travel 5-10 mins in the car!

In 2009 she was 90 something on the list, today she was around 74th!

Now, for her birthday I was going to pay her allotment fees for a year - and obviously beacause I cannot wrap it, I was going to put banners up and take her there - thought it would be a lovely idea - until the woman told me she was 70+ on this list.

I then search private allotments.. and not much joy there..

Please please, can anyone help..
In the Gillingham (Kent) area: Does anyone own 2+ plots and are willing to share.
Or does anyone have a plot they are finding difficult on there own and are willing to share????

Any information anyone has, I would be very grateful!!!!

Many thanks
 :)

Welcome to the forum Izzy.  You've just discovered the hard facts that allotments are fashionable, there aren't enough of them and once you get one you hang onto it until it's prised out of your cold dead fingers!

If it's growing space as opposed to an allotment your Mum wants, then you might have more luck on Landshare:

http://www.landshare.net/ (http://www.landshare.net/)

Great idea for a present though - I hope you get lucky!

No pain, no gain!

Most allotment sites open their gates for a short period sometime over the weekend.  You could find out when that is for your chosen site  (may be a sign on the gate or hang around and ask people going in) and make yourself known to a committee member.  They may know of someone who could use some help.  However, your Mum wouldn't get any ownership rights to the plot and would still have to wait her turn on the waiting list.
Title: Re: Where exactly is your allotment? - Region - South East
Post by: Izzy08 on October 29, 2011, 14:53:27
Hmm, yes, great idea! Thanks

I understand that plot share would have nothing legal with it, and fall out, having to stop etc may occur - its one of those awkward choices isnt it? You can use space in a plot, knowing that you may have to give it up or you wait for 10 years to be allocated one!

Hello a newbie here.
Just got our first plot in Edenbridge. I'd heard the waiting lists were crazy but rang up anyway to get on the list and found out no one is waiting and there were 3 and 1/2 to choose from! lucky lucky me!!!  :D So off I skipped down there to meet the allotment manager and choose my patch.
So I only have 2 weeks to wait until I can 'move in'....I'm incredibly excited!
I used to have a small veggie patch in my garden but then along came 2 kids, 4 cats and 2 dogs (not all at the same time!) and put an end to my little peace of heaven so very much looking forward to getting stuck in and the plot is in good condition too so not much digging to do  :)
Got a greenhouse coming (thanks Freecycle) on Tuesday for the garden so I can get things going in there too. Yipeeeeee  ;D

Hosepipe ban here and standpipe threats looming already for next spring  ::).................and here I am, at the ready to instruct hubby and son on how to syphon the water from their baths down to my water butts.  :)

It's early days and may the heavens always open (at night time). Good wishes to all us South Eastern gardeners and allotmenteers for the growing season, not forgetting those at all compass points who also suffer at times.

The keep telling us all the rain we are having will not help the drought as the summer rain is taken up by the plants or evaporates.

Hi Aden I'm in the South East....in not sunny at all Kent!
This year has been so bad that I am actually planning to give up my allotment & am in the process of moving the raised beds to my tiny back garden so I can have a mini plot outside my back door.
I have arthritis & don't drive & have moved quite a long way away from my lotty recently so all of that combined with the awful weather, regular break ins at the allotments, silly new rules about not being able to grow anything that stays in the soil for more than one year  ::)  have made my mind up for me. I will be very sad to see it go after taming it from an awful wilderness to a very productive plot but I have to be realistic, keeping it on without the help of my sons who have now left home & moved away just isn't viable unless we are having normal seasons. If we were having a very dry year like last year I wouldn't be able to water enough! xJane

My plot is in rain sodden Kent!
Near Chatham in fact!
I shall go down tomorrow to pick some bits and bobs but must admit that this year it is very weedy - it is just so hard to keep it weeded when it's too wet to walk on!

HI Jane (Crystalmoon) and Louise Stella.

Sorry to hear you are both experiencing the same as me. Miserable isn't it no matter how optimistic you try to be it is a b*gger of a year with little sign of good growing weather on the near horizon. Even if things do get back to "normal" I wonder if there's enough of the season left.  ::)

I think, Jane (Crystalmoon) you are very sensible. There's no point in struggling or worrying and if it's not enjoyable stop, adapt and if it suits carry on in a more manageable way.

I have one-and-a-half plots. The grass paths are lush (and need cutting yet again!!!!), the weeds wonderful and a few struggling crops are trying their best.

I give it one more year for the half plot as I have started a new home veg garden across the road in my parents new bungalow. Downsizing gradually. Not what I expected so soon as I'm now early retired but, what with the weather and looking after my parents 7 days a week, there's less time than anticipated.

At least we can't moan about all those trips up and down with a watering can.  ;)

It's pouring again after just 10 minutes sunshine (the first for 3 days) so I'm off to get my parents washing back in.  :(

On the off chance that anyone still sees this thread, I've got two half-plots (that's like a whole plot, but with two other people in the middle!) on Wolvercote Common in Oxford. We're in 380-odd acres of water meadow, stuck out on the top of a SSSI thanks to a naughty Austrian named Adolf, with water from wells provided by the Thames a few hundred yards away. Well, it's a few hundred yards away at the moment, some winters it's right over the top of us! It's just about two hundred yards from our back door - I can just about see the alloments if I stand on the kitchen sink and look out over the rooftops - and on a sunny day it's a wonderful place to garden. When it's windy and the rain is coming in sideways on a westerly, it takes some dedication!

Welcome to A4A.  I am just over the border in Gloucestershire technically in the South West.  We are near the Thames too.   So if I pee, sooner or later it will (after cleaning) be coming your way.

The West/ North West Wind rips through our site too.    I plant tall peas along the windward side of my plot every year to give the plants some protection in the Spring and hide my courgettes etc behind bales of straw.

Sounds like you are just the sort of people upstream I worry about!  :tongue3:

It's also why I'm amused by the Commoners' Committee wanting to declare the common organic - with water from the Thames? Hmm...

Thanks for the tips about the wind (as it were) - might have to try the bales one in particular, and get some net for the peas to climb too.

I personally would be more worried about what comes out of Swindon.

I agree with you that it would be very difficult to think of the River Thames as organic.  Very few of the farms upstream are organic.
