Title: Computer was broken

Got it mended, over 10 years old.  Was surprised that I missed it so much, and couldn't read Allotments 4 all.  Back now, hurray.  :sunny: :sunny:  Only cost me £50, still goes wrong on Facebook, but who cares.

I have done this. Hard drive failed but rest of machine fine so got new HDD and installed fresh copy of windows. Voila good as new laptop. Even managed to recover data on old drive by turning it into a USB external HDD. Very satisfying. Cheaper than a new laptop too!!
