Hi guys.
The Bun sent me over here. Pleased to meet you all.
The camera I am using, is one like this one on e-bay. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4616&item=5193880602&rd=1
I originally bought 4, as I got them for around £6.50 each, incl P&P. Needless to say, when the guy put more on, he changed the rules. lol Those four were supposed to have infra red LEDs, for night time vision, but in fact they had bright white LEDs, so I bought one more, the same as that one on e-bay, but it did have the infra red LEDs, and microphone. That's the one you are viewing Bleep's nest through. (Bleep is what we call the tit. lol) The other 3 cams are the cheaper ones, and work perfectly well, though I have to blank off the LEDs, as I suspect no bird in it's right mind is going to sleep with that lot on.
Bleeps nest was the first one I did, and just mounted the cam on a little L bracket, but Bleep wasn't long till she was on top of it, so had to pack that space out, to stop her. The other 2 boxes were put up much later, hence the reason they are empty, I suspect, but I made them higher, and put in a false ceiling, with just the camera lens peeping through. Take a look at this site too. http://www.beautifulbritain.co.uk/htm/wildlife_gardening/bluetitcam.htm
He has done it a different way. More expensive, but the results are better too.
I'll try & pop in here regular, and keep you updated on the goings on.
Any more questions, please ask, and I will do my best.
Cheers.

Yesterday morning, one egg.

This morning, two eggs.

Can expect an egg/day, or there abouts, till clutch is laid. You will find a big difference in the quality of the picture, according to what time of day you are viewing, and the weather, as the only light is that coming through the entrance hole.

Glad to see that you have joined us h2yoho, its been really interesting reading about your camera and how you set it up as ive often wondered how its done.

Ive viewed the nest a few times now and its so exciting.  Those stills are amazing too.
Keep up the good work, it is very much appreciated :)

Hi Honeybee. Glad you like it. Makes all the effort worthwhile. Been a great learning curve, and hope to do better next year, now that I have got a feel for it. I will keep you updated here, as best possible, so keep popping in.

Crystal Talloo. How you doin m8.  :D
Well guys. Another egg this morning, and what's more, Booster, the male, was in and gave Bleep food. Happened too quick for me to get a snap, but it's only a matter of time.

Sorry bout piccie quality, but it's that time of day. Depending on the light coming in through the entrance hole, so somewhat limited. Hope to have that sorted for next year too.  ;)

Thanks for the info re ebay I will probably have a go next year. The Pics are fascinating. Weve all seen them on the telly but when Its in your own garden it makes it a lot more interesting. I think my box is at about the same stage as yours as the male has been taking food in but not seen the female for a while now. Keep up the posting and thanks for the info again.

Yoohoo Yoho!  ;D

I keep popping in and out for a peek too. I love it.  ;D

I dont know if my box is used or not. There seems to be a bird there occasionally but then I dont see anything for days.  :-\  I think it might be like that KitKat ad where the bloke sits with the camera for hours, turns his back for a few mins and the bears come out rollerskating!  ;D

Just to show you the setup from the outside.

Bleep is in the middle box. I intend putting another two up there next year, with 5 cams running. The cables from those three cams run directly into a USB hub in the roof space, and are then fed to my computer, using a 5mtr repeater cable. Works well that setup, as I don't end up with a load of cables at the computer.  :)

Think I seem to recollect a certain Mrs Ava.  ;)
Think there is a bit of a technical problem with the live feed. Not sure what it is yet, as the cams are running ok, and uploading. Problem, I can't see the live feed you see, as it will not feed back through my Netgear Router. A real pain that. However, if you can see live feed, please let me know, by posting here.
Thanks guys.  :)

Live feed should be running again, but it probably only refreshes every few seconds with you. Could you let me kow the refresh rate you are getting Honey, not that I can do anything to up it, but just as a matter of interest.
Thanks.

There she goes again with her feather  ;D

The refresh rate varies yoho between approx one and four seconds, there doesnt seem to be a pattern, it can go one second, one second, three seconds, one second etc etc

Yoho, just had a word with better half about you not being able to view the livestream and he suggested you might try this?

If you cannot see the web cam view you may need to download Java VM
and go to your internet settings in tools/internet options/advanced tab/and check all java box options to enable java.

Hope it may be of some help to you, if not back to the drawing board.

Oh if life were that simple honeybee. ;)
No. The problem lays with the router. It's a Netgear DG834G, and has a hardware firewall, and an IP address, which is 192.168.0.1 The fact that the feed is going out from my router, it cannot come back in. It can only get as far as the router, as it is seeing that 192.168.0.1 IP. Sounds a bit naff I know, but there you go. Doesn't seem to be a work around at the moment.
Take a look at this page (http://www.msagentsoftware.com/easyfreewebcam/tutorials/setupyourrouter.html), down at the bottom.
Thanks for the help, and if you or your OH can think of anything else, please let me know.
The only way I can see round it, is to change me hardware, and I don't need to spend any more dosh on that at the moment.
Maybe for next year.  :D

Welcome to A4A.

How long will she sit on them before they hatch? Anyone know?
Title: Re: Live birdie cam
Post by: lilylover on May 07, 2005, 20:20:01
Hiya Maz. Once she's finished laying and starts incubating them,  they take about a fortnight to hatch.
Title: Re: Live birdie cam
Post by: honeybee on May 07, 2005, 20:25:43
Maz i was wondering that too, so i did a search and found lots of interesting reading that kept me quiet this afternoon,  :)  Ive C&P'd this for you which answers your question.

Blue tits breed wherever there are areas of trees with suitable nest holes. They start looking for nesting sites about February, preferring small holes or narrow cracks in trees about 1 - 15 metres from the ground. Nest-boxes in gardens are readily used, especially if there is a shortage of natural sites in an area. Both males and females search for nest holes, but when the male finds somewhere suitable, he displays by fluttering his wings and calling to his mate; he will then go into the hole, calling the female and hoping she will follow and approve the site. She doesn't always approve it and may reject several before deciding on the one she wants! She builds the nest alone, collecting moss, dried grass, dead leaves and wool to fill the bottom of the nest hole; she forms a cup-shaped structure with this material and finally lines it with soft feathers or hair.

A clutch of 7 - 13 eggs is laid from mid-April to early May. The eggs are white with reddish-brown speckling and are laid at the rate of one a day. Incubation begins only when the clutch is almost complete - the female usually covers the eggs with some nest lining if she has to leave them for a while.

Incubation lasts almost two weeks and whilst the female is sitting on the eggs, the male defends the area around the nest site from other blue tits, so protecting the available food needed for both adults and, later, the young. He also brings food to his mate. The young hatch at a time when food is at its most abundant. They are fed by both parents, mainly on small caterpillars, and stay in the nest for two or three weeks. The adults also remove the droppings regularly, to keep the nest clean.

Hi Val. Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the link Honeybee. Have PMed you.
Not that difficult to set up really. If I can do it, anyone can do it. How far away is the shed from your puter, or could you mount a nestbox a bit closer somewhere? It'll be too late for this year, but you will have plenty of time to have it up and running for next year.

hi2yoho  - Fantastic live cam, I've been toying with the idea myself as I have started making bird/bat boxes.  Buying one already wired is nearly £200 :o

Do you think I could use the following to fit into a nest box if I didn't want to hook it up to my pc?  I'd run a wire rather than the wireless option on the wee battery...

Have you checked this site (http://www.beautifulbritain.co.uk/htm/wildlife_gardening/bluetitcam.htm) Quiney? With that setup, you would need a TV capture card to view it on your computer. You could of course view it direct on your TV screen, or record to VCR. That e-bay one would be the same. The picture quality doesn't seem to be just as good, but would be ideal for a remote spot.
Maplin (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?criteria=board%20CAMERA&menu=0&WorldSearch=Y&doy=8m5&ShowPics=true) do board cams.
This (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=4616&item=5193880602&rd=1) is what I am using.  :)

Quinny,

you could use the camera you mentioned and by a Video S  to usb adapter so you can run it on your computer. You can then set easywebcam up to work with it. That way you don't need to run wires from the box. I don't know how long the battery would last though.

It's wonderful watching her sat there, I could watch all day.

I went in to a school yesterday and saw their webcam, it's brilliant for the children to see the bird in the nest.  Looked just like yours.  The TV was in the classroom and when the bird got a feather stuck on her head the children were completely distracted by it as she fell asleep with it still there.

I love to quietly sit and watch her.

To think the same thing is going on just about 3 feet away from me on the outside wall.  :)  Its been very busy in mine with food ( looks like caterpillars) going in quite often.

I know what you mean - ours is about six feet away. I try to put the washing out really quickly so I don't disturb them too much!
Ours seem to be eating lots of centipede type things. What is it about being so close to something like that that's so special?  :)
Title: Re: Live birdie cam
Post by: maz on May 12, 2005, 13:51:48
. What is it about being so close to something like that that's so special?  :)

I dont know caz,  it just is isnt it?
I watched baby rats playing by the lake in Southport one day. I know we are supposed to hate them but it was actually lovely to watch them.

Its all nature and if you have it in your soul to appriciate it you are a lucky person.

Glad you feel the same as me about it  :)  One of my favourite things are the robins at the allotment. They come so close while you weed or dig. Last year I was able to feed grubs to one - he actually took them off my hand - it was just so lovely. I find myself talking away to them - thought I was going a bit potty but discovered my mum does the same thing!  ;D

I've read help the Sparrow postings before now.

I know they have declined but there is still over 7 million breeding pairs down from 12 million over 30 years.

I'd say that is how nature works, ups and downs.

If you guys see anything interesting let Yoho know and we'll add it to the log....

I don't know why but looking at it makes it seem very emotional its lovely.  In Asda's yesterday I bought a couple of bird boxes with the hinged lid, it looks just right for a web cam to go in, we're going to start looking soon for a web cam for next year, I want to give the box a coat of wood stain and get it up long before next year so they get used to the box . I'll still leave the old one up so if they don't take to the new one they've still got somewhere to nest.I'm quite excited about it.

Hi Guys,

I've been transfixed with the birdycam also.  Below are pictures of my home made titbox and the mother/father who has been dashing back and forth with grub.  I can hear the chicks chirping like mad - next year though I intend to master the nest-cam for sure!!!
Beware of future question.

I am pleased for the birds but so sad!  I watched for ages before I went to work this morning because I could see they were ready to go and wanted to have a last look at them, logging in now and seeing the empty nest was really sad.

Thank you both for having the webcam and keeping it going, our house has watched it avidly over the last few weeks, the birds have provided much entertainment.  I hope they live long and happy lives in the big wide world.
