Title: Blue Pallets
Post by: darby on December 23, 2009, 23:57:49
Hi,

I have been given some pallets by my employer to build a compost bin with, but they are blue.

I have read that the blue ones are owned by a company, and they will prosecute you if they discover you have them.  :o

As far as I can see I have four options;

Return them
Destroy/burn them
Paint them another colour and use them
Use them as they are

What would you do? Does anyone actually know someone who has got into trouble for using them?

Sounds like they are chep pallets. Chep say:

CHEP equipment cannot legally be bought, modified, exchanged for non-CHEP equipment, sold, or otherwise disposed of.
Unauthorised appropriation, use or disposal of CHEP equipment is strictly prohibited.

If they have been given to you by someone then the are yours! Paint them if youre worried about it - you may not want a blue compost bin anyway...

I have several blue ones acquired from various sources, usually because things have been delivered on them, and the delivery agent has subsequently not returned to collect them, leaving the consignee the problem of disposing of them.
If 'chep' were really worried about them then they'd have arrangements in place to ensure they could all be retrieved.

'phone your local Chep agent, they will come and collect!!
they can not be sold / owned by anyone except Chep.

Use them. They've been given to you, and you didn't mention anything on them saying 'property of Chep'. Anyone could have painted the things. I don't suppose they pay anyone to go wandering round allotment sites looking for blue pallet wood.

I get dozens of blue pallets from builders merchants. They don't collect them so they have no recourse in law to reclaim them after a reasonable period of time. As far as I am concerned, they dump them with me and it becomes my problem to dispose of them. If they try to claim one back from me then they can have an invoice for the disposal costs of a couple of hundred of them.

Just use them and don't give it another thought.  :)

It seems the general consensus is to use them, so that's what I've done  :D

I've put some pictures on my blog if anyone is interested (the link is in my signature)

Thanks to all that commented and a merry Christmas to all ;D

I thought they were plastic ones until I saw the picture, nice to see they are green now!

I doubt very much if the Chep pallet police will come and swoop down on your lotty for the illegal use of their pallets, but Chep do and have been known to prosecute companies and individuals for selling and illegal use of their property, :)

I do some work for a local hualier and we get charged for lost pallets, in the region of £10 each.  Someone, somewhere has paid for them.  CHEP make an absolute fortune out of this.

I would take them back just because of who I work for.  If you do nothing else at least paint them.

When I was at school, the Head was known as the Master. Are you him, by any chance? Otherside, Master, are you a Time Lord?
