Meg the black lab who is just a little bit dim and continually looks at me with big confused brown eyes!

three cats bubble, squeak and twinkle - i,ve just hit the vodka coz had to dash to vets at 9.30 with twinkle a 15 year old tabby.  She came in unable to walk, after quick exam at vets they decided to keep her in overnight for xrays in morning - she got herself in such a pickle during the car journey that they were unable to do a full exam due to her panic stricken state. Vet gave her injection for pain relief.

I was OK while at the vets but once I got home cried my heart out - the other two cats are the same age and I know its a good age so its a worry when something like this happens.

the vodka is kicking in now so i,m feeling a little better - hope twinkle is too!!

With regards to the pain she definatley blamed me, when the vet found the place that hurt she well n truely bit me, not once but twice!!!!!  But I love her dearly!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Title: Re: what have you got (pets)
Post by: Delilah on October 03, 2005, 21:42:30
Thanks joji - she has to stay at vets for another 24-48 hrs, xray showed no fractures to front legs they seem to think that whatever trauma she has suffered has resulted in nerve damage.  The big worry however is that xray also showed a shadow over top half of one lung!!  Vet wants to wait and re - xray to see if there has been any change they are unsure if it is bruising due to trauma or something more serious which was existing prior to trauma.

Hope that makes sense - needless to say we are all worried, my daughters especially so - they just want her home as do I but she needs regular pain relief so has to remain admitted to animal hospital.

How do you remember all your animals names, we only have 5 pets and 2 daughters and I still go through them all before I get the right name - my girls think its hilarious when I call them by the rabbits name!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear let me know how your cat is please. the Shadow on her lung does not sound good. :'(. I hope she pulls through for you. You are in my thoughts. Yes I know enough about vets to know what you are saying. :)

We do have the odd wrong name with all the animals starting with a " B " we have Blase, Brandy, Badger & Binks so that can be confusing but other than that it is not too bad :D

We only have one child so that is OK as none of the animals start with an " A " lol ;D

Delilah - do keep us updated. Hope she's better soon. Big hug.

I've only ever had one pet in my life - my parents wouldn't let me have a pet (poor deprived child) and now as Mr Aqui and I live in a flat, my garden is very precious and we work almost full time, I don't feel it's fair on the animal. My one and only animal was a horse, who I sold about two years ago after he put in a series of (fortunately) failed attempts to kill me!

Delilah been following the events with Twinkle. Poor moggy. Fingers and toes crossed for you and Twinkle.

Heres a pic of my old dog  Cassie.  She likes to jump into people's cars as soon as they open the door. Embarrrassing. She is going through her puppyhood again because she can't hear us tell her to stop what she's doing...taking full advantage of that she is!

The other pic is of Spook lol!

Aqui - please you survived the horse!!!

heldi - luuuuuurve the piccys!! one of our other cats squeak jumps into neighbours car all the time and has frequently been brought back after a short car journey!!!

Thanks for all your concerns, twinkle has shown little improvement, vet took blood tests yesterday, is going to take another xray on Thurs and then we will have to decide where we go from there!!!

Meg, our dog, is totally lost without twinks - there were inseparable, she just keeps looking at me with those big sad brown eyes!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi all - Delilah my thoughts are with you and poor Twinkle :(

Wardy - your dog sounds hilarious - not unlike my mum's old Jack Russel, she'd appear in bed with house guests all the time - lol

We are a small household, just the two cats: Fry who is the biggest black moggy anyone's ever seen (Beast of Ashford) and Jasmine who is a dinky fluffy little grey & white persian cross. She has recently taken to sleeping on top of a pile of (cloth) nappies in my toddler's room   ::)

Oh, and my hubbie of course - still working on house-training that one! When i have cause to tell one of them off I hardly ever get the name right first time ???

Post by: Delilah on October 07, 2005, 09:20:07
Twinkle Update - Further xrays showed small reduction in size of shadow on lung, therefore vet has assumed it is bruising due to trauma, however front leg has deteriorated and due to lack of circulation and after much soul searching and tears have decided to have leg amputated - the op is taking place today

We are all keeping our fingers crossed that she comes through the op OK but obviously due to her age there is some concern!!!!!

Oh dear, it's a bit traumatic reading through some of these posts as well as a bit of a giggle.

We have 2 cats, Scampi & Chips, common or garden rescue mogs. We also have 2 rats (daughters) Brie & Zooey. Having gone through various guinea pigs & hamsters I must say the rats are terrific pets ( if a bit pongy from time to time). A bit of personality.

Thank you so much to all of you, considering I,m a newbie to this board you have all been very kind ( I have posted on other (not ot be mentioned) message boards in the past and have never been made to feel so welcome so quickly as I have on A4A - cheers!!!!!

Twinkle has had her op and is coming out of the anesthetic as I type - the vet seems quite optimistic now.

Wardy - we have no idea what happened to her, the vet just keeps referring to "trauma", there were no marks on her atall she just came into kitchen unable to walk!!!!!

Delilah - do hope Twinkle is OK - glad to hear the vet is sounding optimistic now.  One of my cousins had a three-legged cat - she seemed to manage to balance very well except for getting a bit confused when she tried to dig.

Used to have a cat when I was little, but can't have any pets now as I have too many allergies :(, so have to make do with an imaginary dodo (as in "Who knocked those papers off the table?" "It wasn't me:  it must have been the dodo" ::)).

We do have the odd wrong name with all the animals starting with a " B " we have Blase, Brandy, Badger & Binks so that can be confusing but other than that it is not too bad :D
We only have one child so that is OK as none of the animals start with an " A " lol ;D

Hmm, I'm an only child & after nearly 40 years my Dad still calls me by the wrong name half the time!

We ve gained another cat - turned up tues night, no collar or name tag, my girls made posters which we ve put up in post office on lamp posts etc but no luck get finding her owner!!!

Twinkle is doing remarkably well with 3 legs, its very difficult keeping her inside while the other cats are free to come and go as they please.  I was stood at front door getting milk in when she flew out and up the street!!  What a shock the neighbours must have got, me in dressing gown, hair looking like a wild witch chasing a 3 legged cat hopping down the street !!!!!!!
 :o

Ah well only 3 more days til the stiches are removed then she can go back outside  :D

Delilah - so glad to hear Twinkle is doing well - I can just imagine her getting out & hopping down the road when you're trying to keep her in - typical cat ::)!

Hope you manage to find your "extra" cat's owners - will you adopt him/her if you can't?

Juliet - the new arrival has settled in very nicely and we will be sorry to see him go if owners turn up, and of course we will keep him so long as he wants to stay if we don,t find his original owners.  We had a stray cat stay with us a couple of years ago but she disappeared again after a couple of months, I think some cats just like to wander!!!!!

Aw she's lovely Karrot!

Delilah  how's Twinkle?

Took Cassie down to the sea this morning. She's been scritching and a scratching so a dunk in the sea was called for. She loves it! She slipped off a rock in her excitement and sploshed into a deep bit. Gawd it must have been freezing, never seen her swim as fast.

Saw loads of seeweed washed up onto the beach...now I'm thinking seaweed mulch seaweed fertiliser etc.

thanks for asking Heldi - Twinks is doing well, had stitches out this week return to vets on 31st for more x-rays to check the shadow over lung area, our new arrival has been returned to original owners, they were on holiday and the neighbours were feeding him!  They had not seen him for a few days and didn't think he was eating much food but never realised he was missing!!!!!!!!!

My mum is moving in for a week to look after twinks while we take a well deserved rest in Cornwall - see you in a week!!!!!!!!!!

We used to have a tank of tropical fish (daughter's) but gave them to a good home when we had to have the builders in.

We have three cats.  Zazu, the eldest came from a supermarket - he was in a box with a young couple seeking a home for him.  He's black and white, long-haired and very handsome and 6 yrs old now.  He had an accident in Feb and, like Twinkle, has lost a front leg.  Got depressed for a while but is fine now and very mobile but not good at cornering when playing ticky.  He also has no brakes on our tiled floor or when he jumps on the office desk to "help" with the filing.  Papers everywhere!

Sacha is a long-haired tabby I found thru an add in a pet and garden store.  She was grey as a kitten but changed.  She's a demon huntress and very jealous - as we discovered when someone abandoned a kitten in the rain outside our house last November.  It took me ages to catch him and bring him in and he spent 10 days under our bed before coming out to play.   Sacha then pounced and tried to kill him and shred me so became a headcase for a while and Casper is now a basket case but very loving and cuddly.  He's a pretty tabby with white paws and tum.

It's been interesting.  Couldn't pick Sacha up for ages without being shredded and we had to shuffle cats in and out of rooms so they didn't meet.  Now she purrs and just gives a token chew and has started playing again.

Almost a year on and Casper is twice her size but still wets himself if he thinks he's cornered.  The daft thing is that friends came to dinner once with their Jack Russell - an adopted dog who'd been abandoned twice before and can't be left on his own.   Casper put him in his place in no uncertain terms but dives under furniture and growls when the demon Sacha hoves into view.

Still, they're all off to the cat hotel for 10 days soon and this time will be sharing a pen.  That should finally sort them out.   Zazu is a perfect kitten trainer and whacks t'other pair when they're being naughty so he can arbitrate and the lady is fore-warned and knows to keep an eye and separate them if it gets out of hand.

We've always had loads of cats at once with abandoned, sick and lonely girl thingies turning up and no bother at all so this has been weird.   Daughter wants a dog but guess who'd get all the walkies and poop scooping!  She wants a horse - ditto!   And the cost of kennels for holidays!  And what would Sacha do to a puppy?  No way I say.

We  have a weimaraner called Annie (that is "my wife has...")- like bella - a great character and very friendly, but it must be something about the breed - they can all look very snooty and superior, a "today ze allotment, und tomorrow ze vorld!" type of down-the-nose look (and its quite a nose).  Loves walks/runs but when she gets back she's a real couch potato.

Its funny it sounds a lot when you write it all down but the dogs are so well behaved (on a good day  ;D ) i dont notice the number and they are under my feet all day indoors.
The cat can be VERY demanding and when she wants a cuddle eveything else has to stop !
Huckleberry the bunny is happy as long as he has food and his toys to throw around and can have a run every day and the chins have their own heated/aircon shed !
Here is my old lady tiggy :)

I converted to cats after Gus, my dog died in January (fast car, escaped dog...protracted mourning that non dog owners couldn't understand.). Went to cats protection and 'tried out' cats until 2 black ones, Louis and Armande took my fancy....they had languished there for 4 1/2 months....they are marvelous, and less keen on leaving the garden when I'm pottering than poor Gus was...thanfully.

Agapanthus I love the name Nonny for one of your cats!  I've got Blackadder in my head now. "Hey Nonny Nonny!"  What a brill name!

I've got a hen called Blossom too. She's a Bovan Nera.

I've also got  Jessie,Jane,Lilly,Talluhlah and Betty.  Betty and Lilly are Bovan Neras,Jessie and Jane are Light Sussex and Talluhlah is looking like a White Star. She was supposed to be a Light Sussex. There White Stars at the place where Igot them from so I'm wondering if she is a hybrid.  She's the least docile and doesn't like to be fussed whereas the others will sit on your lap and be stroked.

Thanks Heidi. None of my hens are as cuddly as Gertie ..
who unfortunately died earlier this year.  She loved nothing
than sitting on your lap and having her head stroked whereupon
she would fall asleep with her beak quivering like a good 'un!!
She would also climb onto the dog when he was laying down
and cuddle into his fur ;D What is a white star? I've not heard of them....
any pics to show?

4 Hamsters (Rosie, Minime, Pancake, Rufus)
3 Guinea Pigs (Vanilla, Coco, Isis)
Numerous fleas (these don't have names)

Hi Agapanthus.

I've found these ppics on the net. I haven't managed to get a good picture of Tallulah as she won't keep still. All my pics are of her scarpering !

The first picture is of a White Star hen. A leghorn type apparently.  The second picture is of a Sussex Star. Never heard of them but Tallulah looks more like that one than the White Star and since the bloke I got the hens off keeps White Stars, Light Sussex and Bovan Neras I guess she'll be a mix of those somewhere along the line!  Who knows? She's a funny 'un!

We have two silver-laced bantum chooks, rose (with a rose comb) and spike (with a spike comb....obviously!)...

But I REALLY want some quails, the babies are the size of bumblebees and I've read about keeping them in a polytunnel/greenhouse (well ventilated) to keep the soil free from pests...
Title: Re: what have you got (pets)

Tell me more, Truffle!! Sounds like a great idea, do they not nibble on plants in PT?
Lottie  ;D
Title: Re: what have you got (pets)
Post by: Truffle on November 10, 2005, 09:28:11
I guess, similar to chooks, they probably would. But you could rotate them around your polytunnel to patches where the ground needs clearing of pests and/or there are no seedlings. I think they would make an awesome addition to your PT!!

Also, if you hatch them yourself they should imprint on you and follow you everywhere,

I'm seriously considering buying some fertilized eggs from ebay (~£2 for 12),

Come on lottie lets see a trial in your PT! ;D

OK! LOL!! Will do it  ;D ;D ;D But just found myself on ebay about to buy, when suddenly realized I had not a clue!! So exited sharpish, but have been busy!! Have got hold of an incubator, and chap who'll help and advise me. But I'll have to wait for bit, cos haven't heard from council yet, and would be awful to get them and then lose PT  :'(...Have also come across the "What you want to do that for?" Brigade, am ignoring them at min....will let you know progess, which may be pitifully slow.... And try mashing slugs, Wardy, sure he'll go for it!! But ask slugs first.....only those who agree....may be few unhappy ones about.... ;D ;)

Aww don't Wards!! LOL!! Am finding this cunning plan very hard to sell to peeps!! And still haven't thought of cunning way of selling it to my sensible OH!!! In my head, and it's pretty busy in there...., Had them hatching in incubator in bedroom, then moved to cardboard box in conservatory, then little run in garden and eventually to PT!!! But whereas it's all so simple in my head, I get all problems pointed out!! Which aren't really problems to me!!Have 3 hrs to come up with brilliant plan!! Am thinking I'll probably do what normally do, keep nodding and smiling while placing order..... ;D ;D ;D where there's a will and all that!!

This will become addictive if you start....mark my words only thing that is
wrong is your timing...would have been better to start in the summer !!
to get them acclimatised to outside temperatures....but it can still be done
lets start by assuming you have incubator....your eggs hatch....best way
to do it is by getting a plastic fish tank with vents on top..the way I see it
done...and have done it myself too is to have a small pygmy spotlight
shining down into the tank...you will soon know if its too cool for them
because they will all huddle together.... same goes if they become too hot
they will tend to go to the perimeters of the tank...you need chick crumbs
for feed and whatever you do never repeat never...put a deep drinking vessel in plastic milk top is best and just enough to cover the surface not
fill it up..seen 1 drown in 1 sec flat that was enough of an eye opener....

Bare in mind they will be no bigger than the top of your thumb joint when
born...they are just like kids...watch they don't get a dirty bum or they bung
up...which in turn causes problems you will need to have them in the tank
about 2-3 weeks....longer the better....If you don't change the flooring
(which in my case was small wood shavings) every couple of days...just like
kids sometimes...they stink!!!! the hard part to judge is when to start  taking
away the heat source during the day...and putting it back at night ...its
never the same with each hatching...and you may find you will get a lot
of visitorswhen word gets around  you got chicks...lol...its great to watch
the little things break out from the eggs...I sat and watched about 20
hatching out over about an hour last week and within about 2 or 3 minutes
they are running about like lil drunk men...the antics are riveting to watch...

Oh and when you do get them into the PT'S you will need to leave some
sort of shelter for them...they will lay their eggs just about anywhere
and they are messy eatersand this is the part that may put you off
they will need chick crumbs to go along with whatever they manage to
scavenge in your PT...and chick crumbs are loved by all vermin I am afraid

Sorry to be a pooper with that last bit...just to let you know ::) ::)

I wish you luck in your venture if you go ahead with it

P.S...if you don't...at least give them a go at hatching them if you have
    kids

                                          Kevin

I have a lovely springer spaniel called Meggie who is 6 years old and a tabby cat Kylie who is 15.  I have one 6 month old Welsummer cockerel raised at home in an incubator and 14 hens of assorted breeds and ages.

Meggie gets on well with Kylie but chases the chickens given half the chance.  She used to round them up and herd them up and down the paddock.  I had to fence them in eventually but, unfortunately, I lost a few of my chicks when they were a couple of months old.  Two got out under the fence and Meggie killed them.  Some of the others disappeared from within the enclosure when I was on holiday and I assume they were taken by buzzards.  I put nets over the run and haven't lost any since.

Meggie is delightful though and loves to sit on our laps to have cuddles.  She is so intelligent and her understanding of language is vast.  She is very spoilt of course.

Pauline, have you not ever seen a transcript of human conversation as heard by a dog -

Just a little info for you Lorna :)

Chocolate

Chocolate contains an element which is toxic to dogs, called Theobromine. Even an ounce or two of chocolate can be lethal to a small dog (10 lbs. or less). Larger quantities of chocolate can poison or even kill a medium or large dog. Dark and unsweetened baking chocolates are especially dangerous. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include: vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, hyperactivity and seizures. During many holidays such as Christmas, New Year's Day, Easter and Halloween, chocolate is often accessible to curious dogs, and in some cases, people unwittingly poison their dogs by offering them chocolate as a treat.

Yes I know it is shocking reading :(

Thanks joji. I must admit until I was told the husband would give Elsa buttons almost on demand. Maybe I should stop even the occasional one. I have told all my kids. they all have a dog.. Elsa is overweight as it is, she is 13kg (King Charles Cavalier)  she is only fed on boiled chicken (skinned) with  some complete diet biscuit.. I have even cut that down to try and reduce her weight a bit.
Title: Re: what have you got (pets)
Post by: joji on November 18, 2005, 21:57:56
Lorna just give her the chicken no biscuit. It is the biscuit that keeps the weight on. It is full of cereals which bulk the dog out anyway. It might say " diet" on the pack but dogs need fat in there diet just the right sort thats all. :) Give her the chicken with the skin on but no biscuit :)

Thanks again joji.   Oh she really will get the hump with me now ;D The one thing I am strict about is she does not get titbits. I think some of it is lack of exercise. You may have read although we had dogs all our fifty years of marraige (Labs and German Shepherds) I am terrified of other dogs . I know it is pathetic. Lorna jnr usually does the walking but she has been so busy this last few months with extra hours and her promotion I am afraid the dogs have been a bit neglected. Not many long walks.. I wish I still had my old house.. could have walked her round and round the acre paddock!!
Title: Re: what have you got (pets)

Forgot to say don't boil it grill or roast it. She will eat it then :)

If you can live in the house with the dog then take her just up and down the road twice per day .She is only a small dog. I am sure she wouldn't hurt you :) If you do see another dog either just cross the road or turn round and go home :)

Ah joji don't get me wrong, she loves her boiled chicken but I meant by reducing her meal (no complete food) So is boiled the best way? That is what the vet told me the way to cook it. If you don't mind I am sending you PM as you  have so much knowledge about dogs. Don't want to hijack this post for too long. Will PM tomorrow. Thanks Lorna.

Do boiled one day then, roasted the next grilled the next. It doesn't matter how she has it. She just needs exercising as you have pointed out. Just give her a bit more chicken than you normally would.

Ok look forward to your PM:)

Will have to answer on the laptop though lol

We are off racing the dogs and have to set off tonight lol ;D

Doesn't say much about me then.  My last dog was a total thicko.  All the looks but no brains at all.  He was just a huge loveable oaf that alway knocked things over with his tail or some such.  My cat is far more intelligent.  Probably more intelligent than me - at least he looks at you as though he is.

LOL @ 5 FISH CALLED NEMO  ;D At least you won't have any trouble finding at least ONE!

I've got:

2 dogs - Eddie the German Shepherd who was SUPPOSED to be half husky and Ben the sheepdog/alsatian/spaniel cross-thingy who belonged to my ex OH. He asked me to look after him for a week whilst he went on holiday and I refused to give him back .. in lieu 15 yr's worth of maintenance money  8)

1 cat - Morgan Trixiebelle Kadacoon, Maine Coon cat who has an aversion to rodent comestibles (thinking of asking for my money back!)

2 rats - Dierdre and Blanche

1 rabbit - Rita (can you see a pattern emerging here Coronation Street fans?)

3 chickens - my lovely ladies  :)

Last year I bought a state of the art aquarium with the idea of keeping fantail goldfish. They all karked it though. All that was left was one (of a shoal of 12) minnow. I think it thought it had died and gone to fish heaven ... a HUGE tank all to itself for 6 months. Not very entertaining to watch just one minnow swimming around though and I used to begrudge the electricity used on the tank light. It died ... voluntarily.

Alfie (my 3 yr old) is getting a donkey this year  ;D My mate has just bought a farm in Nth. Wales and it's going to live there! And I want a goat ... in the back yard!

We're a one dog, four chicken household...

We've got an all black rescue German Shepherd called Ellie.  She's lovely... as long as you're not another dog, or the postman. We knew about all her problems when we took her on and we're slowly getting there.  Its hard work at times, but very rewarding to see her make progress. I do agility with her, which she loves and is quite good at (though we have to have a lesson on our own because she's still not good enough around other dogs).

Our chickens are: Buffy (a Welsummer), Ginger (a Buttercup), Paxo (a Goldline) and Bisto (a Rhode Star).  They are have their own characters and its great to have such fresh, tasty eggs too.
