Title: New potatoes
Post by: AlanP on April 27, 2019, 14:59:07
Hi. I have planted Rocket (early potatoes) in my poly tunnel, They have just started to flower, but I cant remember when they are ready for harvesting, is it as soon as they flower or do you wait until the flowers have died off ?
I have got he butter and salt ready  :icon_tongue: every time I go in the tunnel my mouth starts watering

Have a quick furtle and check for the tuber size.

i think it depends on personal requirments, rocket bulk up really quickly and sometimes are ready before flowering. as surggested id have a gentle feel around and give them a good watering  two days before harvest  hope this helps

Why not just dig up one root?

Well I couldn't wait, so yesterday I dug up two roots and we had a dish full each with lots of butter and salt and then finished off with the first of the strawberries out of the polytunnel. Those that are left are going to be fried up with some bacon tonight. We know how to live up here.  :icon_cheers:

Anyone's mouth watering now?

Don't think I've ever had fried strawberries!

Very impressive considering where you live!

The spaghetti plant I bought at the car boot has just started to flower, so it won't be long now before I can enjoy spaghetti bolognaise.  Not sure how long I should let it grow before I cut it though, is there a recommended length?  I don't want it to grow too long though because I think the EU regulations say spaghetti should be no longer than a pig's elbow.  Any suggestions from the forum?

Paulh has inspired me to have a furtle in the greenhouse. Has anyone else got new potatoes yet?

I've just scrobbled out a few from each of my greenhouse pots, hope the plants (pentland javelin) won't mind and will carry on developing, salad tonight with lots of lovely lettuce, radish, rocket, and a bit of asparagus....
It's at this point every year that I remember why I garden!
