Title: Yorkshire folk...
Post by: Piglottie on May 26, 2005, 13:49:28
Just got my lottie  ;D and was wondering if there was anyone on here from the Yorkshire area.  I'm based in Hull, East Yorkshire on the Newland Avenue site.  Wondered if anyone had the joys of sharing the colder northern temps?

I'm in Leeds, about 6 miles outside the City itself :)
No lottie and a tiny garden, but I'm doing my best. This is the first year that I've made a serious effort to 'grow my own', although I can only do a few things at a time due to the lack of space and everything is in tubs and compost sacks :(

I've been successful with toms and strawberries in the past, but I'm trying potatoes, onions, garlic and runner beans this year.
I started doing some proper herb growing last year, as well ;D

Bunnycat - was travelling through Leeds yesterday on the way to pick someone up with a friend (don't ask me where, not far from the LCH hospital?)

I'm growing stuff on my patio too as only got lottie this week.  Have just put tomatoes out in grow bags on patio and am going away this weekend so trying not to worry that when I get back toms will be no more!  Also have strawberrys, one pepper plant (not too optimistic about it fruiting) and loads of herbs - am growing basil and coriander for the first time this year and seeds are up already (planted 6 days ago).
Title: Re: Yorkshire folk...
Post by: bunnycat on May 26, 2005, 23:55:08
My basil has also come up very quickly. About a week for mine, too ;D

I'm trying to work round a lot of upheaval at the moment, which isn't easy :-\
First our fence blew down in those gales early this year, and we had a building site for weeks while hubby and FIL erected a new one, then the guy on the other side of us decided he was going to pull down his wall and put up a fence like our new one, so the other side of the garden is now a building site just as things are returning to normal where we had to do our fence >:(

All my veggies were already ordered, so I've no option but to make the best of it and try to grow things in mild to moderate chaos :'(
It'll be a miracle if I manage to grow ANYTHING!!! LOL!!

Dear Rosebud,

Alwoodly is just around the corner from Adel where one of the best little gardens in the UK is hidden away, Yorkgate is open most Sundays, and Thursday evenings to raise money for charity. Well worth a visit if you are near.

Post by: bunnycat on May 29, 2005, 16:20:04
Gardenantics, I wish I'd seen your post a bit earlier. I had no idea about that garden in Adel and we're only 8 or 9 miles from there.
It's a gorgeous day and we were at a loose end this morning :(

Definately something bear in mind next time we have a bored Sunday looming :)

Hi Bunnycat,

Yes it's well worth the trip, and the money goes to the Gardeners Benevolent Society for retired gardeners.
Try the link;

It's open tomorrow too as it's a bank holiday.

Hi all you Yorkshire lads and lasses. I'm in Huddersfield and not been doing this thing long. Anyone know of a co-op or society that uses its collective powers to buy things at discount. I would like to join somewhere that can order cheap seed potatoes, pots, compost etc.

Hello Piglottie, I'm just down the road from you in York :-)
Title: Re: Yorkshire folk...
Post by: Piglottie on June 05, 2005, 11:15:43
Hi all!

Sweet-pea - love York!  Tend to pop over at least once a month for a browse round the shops (however, not so much in the summer as the Yanks sometimes seem to take over!!!).

Well, it seems to have been raining forever here in Hull and am desperately trying to get down to new lottie to do some digging but its too wet!  Have stuff in pots waiting to be planted out so am hoping for a few dry days to get on with the digging.

PS:  Toms survived my weekend away and are now thriving on the patio in their growbags.

Bunnycat - Am overrun with basil as the stuff I just planted in pots outside has now come up!  Think much pesto will be in store this summer.  ;D

Can't agree more: I'm in Armley, Leeds (no prison jokes, please) and enjoying some nice windowsill and small veg patch gardening.

Gardenatics, is that garden in Adel the walled garden with the wildlife?  I remember years ago, when I used to do some conservation work, going with some friends early one morning to watch the kingfishers.  Sad to say, I have no idea where it was now, but maybe that's a good thing.

Regards to all,
Sue

Hi SueK,

No I don't think Yorkgate is the garden you remember, as it's not a walled garden, but does have extensive hedges and 'Room' like parts, so maybe. Never seen a Kingfisher there either!

Nice to see so many Yorkies on the board.

My Dad's a Yorkie through & through & despite 45 years of living in north lincolnshire he's still got his accent.   I tend to speak like him & my grandad even though I'm now over in Leicestershire.   When ever I visit relatives in either Pocklington or Holme upon Spalding Moor I always pick up the dialect again & nobody can understand me when I get back to work.

Dear Piglottie

hows close Burstwick to you lol !!!

is that east Hull or West Hull your in ?
Title: Re: Yorkshire folk...
Post by: Piglottie on July 14, 2005, 19:23:54
Hi Carloso

Great to see a local about - was beginning to think I was the only one on these boards in the Hull area!  My plots in West Hull, on the Newland Ave site, not far from the University.  Do you have a plot in Burstwick or are you lucky enough to have a garden that does the job?   :)

PS:  Only took over a jungle (and I mean jungle - marestail, dandelions, grasses, not been cultivated for over 27 years!) in late May so no chance of me doing digging duty in Burstwick - only on my third raised bed and who knows how many more to go?  ::)
Title: Re: Yorkshire folk...
Post by: carloso on July 15, 2005, 11:24:54
hellooo

i say unfortunatly i dont have the garden space but my allotment is only at the top of the street so's to speak as im surrounded by fields (ok i live on the edge of the villafe about 400yds from the allotments) so its almost as good as a garden lol
where on Newland ave do they have allotments ? ive never seen where they are, Mind you if they are jungles it probably the reason why, In saying that mine was of a similar nature last yr and to be fair its only this yr i have managed to get it clean and keep it that way !!

ok so 3 raised beds on yours i think you now have time to dig mine lol

Title: Re: Yorkshire folk...
Post by: Piglottie on July 16, 2005, 00:28:45
Carl lol  ;D  No chance of digging duty cos to be honest I'm only supervising and weeding - hubbie's the one doing the manual work  ;)  Could try hiring him out to pay for new stuff for lottie  :D  lol

The allotments run parallel to Newland Ave - if you go down one of the side streets and to the bottom (passed Sidmouth St primary school) the plots are in quite a big square area between Newland Ave area/Goddard Ave/Newland Park.  I've done a copy of the street map ref but not sure if it will work http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=508081&y=431285&z=1&sv=tavistock+street&st=6&tl=Tavistock+Street,+Hull,+HU5&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf.  Basically, the allotments are in the blank area!

The plots have been there a long time as some of the plot holders have been on there for over 40 years - used to have to wait years to get a plot.  They declined in recent years, with some old timers struggling on, but now nearly all the plots are let and the place is looking good.  Its so peaceful despite the hustle and bustle of the city, and as we don't have a garden we can mess with, its a great escape.  They've also turned quite a few lotties over to nature gardens, which makes the place look lovely and attracts the wildlife, but now that there is a demand again for the plots its a shame that a lot of the growing space has been handed over to other things.  But I understand the reasons why.

Anyway, am waffling now and must get to me bed as have more digging and weed warfare to undertake tomorrow before it gets too hot.  Strange all this sunshine for us Yorkshire folk - could do with some rain.

Adele

Thanks for bringing this topic up again, hadn't seen it before. I'm in Tadcaster, between York & Leeds. My son is at uni in Hull, living just off Newlands Avenue, so if anyone's got any spare veggies for starving students... :D

I'd recommend Yorkgate garden as well- it's lovely. If you're travelling a distance to get there, call in at Golden Acre Park or Harlow Carr gardens as well.
Sounds like there's enough of us for a Yorkshire meet if the original posters are still around!

Hi Scot and Wilco, guess what I'm in Donnie too, bit obvious really with my sign on!!! at the Barnby dun site. Had my plot since Aug. major mess nettles and brambles. Just me a new lady who got the plot just to the side of me but at the front. We have gone dutch on the hire of a nice farmer and his JCB and obliterated all brambles and nettles on her plot and the vacant plot behind her (next to mine). We are going to share this plot. Easy peasy now its cleared. Just a matter of digging and lifting any missed roots.

Its worth asking around, cost £18 per hour, 2 plots cleared in 2 hours!!!! well worth its money

Hi all, I am from Barnsley South Yorkshire originally and moved to Skipton North Yorkshire 8 years ago. I had an allotment there for 2 years, after waiting to get one for 6 years. Then we had to move for work and school.

Now in Thornton BD13 near Bradford, but I managed to get a plot today :) about a mile down the road in BD15 at Chapel Lane

https://photos.app.goo.gl/B6Nj1hY4N1wB7n1t9 is a link to what I saw this morning. Now the fun begins , we (my family and I) are looking forward to getting stuck in.

Glad to see so many Yorkshire people on here.
