Title: Angelica
Post by: Mrs Ava on February 03, 2004, 01:27:37
I have lots of angelica plants in my garden just begining to poke through the ground all greeny red and squeeky.  What now?  I grew them more for ornamental reasons as I understand they become quite tall and have large leaves and we are trying to go for the jungle look up around the kids play area.  If I wanted to use them for culinary purposes, what bits do I use.  Do I pick of the flowers to prolong the life of the plant.   ???

Just love angelica as an ornamental plant ...but likewise...never bothered to make use of it as a medicinal or culinary herb. Apparently use the leaves in stewed fruit dishes to reduce tartiness  ::)
...... and of particular interest to DP and EJ !!!  ;) ......add seeds to your GIN !!  ;)  ;D

The young leaves can be used for soup or in the stock pot ,but go easy it is powerful and maybe not to everyone`s taste.

Stalks are the parts used to candy, but it is a long laborious process. We did it once and the results did not really justify the time and expense of doing it. For the amount you would normally use, easier and more economic to buy a bit. Unless you want the plant everywhere in your garden dead head most of the plants just leaving a few to seed around. It is biennial by the way.

would just like to say I have Angelica in my garden and use the leaves of the plant to help my son with his travel sickness [he suffers quite badly from this even on short journeys] The leaves are picked fresh then crushed in your hand and when feeling queasy a quick sniff of the leaves aleviates this far better than travel pills with no side effects :)
