As we now live close to a source of seaweed, I was wondering if it makes a good compost activator? Or is it best as a mulch?

It is not an activator, just mix it in any compost heap as you would your usual rubbish it is like every other composting material in its rotting down time. As a winter mulch it is excellent but not around plants unless they are salt tolerant. Mine went on last autumn but it is still lying on the top and looks like a job to dig it in. I shall rake it off and spread it on the path. then run the lawnmower over it to chop it up fine then re-spread it about the plot ready to dig in. It makes a far superior 'tea' than comfrey, nettles etc. Remember when you are collecting it not to take growing seaweed plants, just the loose stuff that has been washed up after a storm
