Title: French Beans
Post by: Moggle on June 01, 2004, 09:22:41
I have finally given in and bought some French Bean seeds, Cobra variety  ;D ;D
Now I just have to wait for my potatoes (in containers) to be ready as I have no space anywhere else to grow the beans.
What I really want to know is, if I sow seeds in individual pots outside, how long it would be before they are ready to transplant to their final growing place(two 15" x 15" pots). I don't expect the spuds to be ready for another 2-4 weeks. I have guessed about 3 weeks, but want to know if this is wrong.  :-\
I got so excited with buying the seeds that I jumped the gun as usual and sowed a bunch yesterday, I will leave them outside to germinate and not need to harden them off.

As an example, sowed 23/4, put out 16/5. = Tim

Moggle,

3 weeks might be a bit short.

I grew some in modules in a propagator (~20 degrees) and they took 4 weeks to reach planting out size

OK, so 3-4 weeks was a reasonable estimation, I am glad to hear that. Thanks Phil and Tim

Now I just have to hope for some sun and warmth, so the beans will germinate.  :)

Moggle, you do realise that cobra are a climbing french bean variety? (well the ones I am growing are! ;D) And by the way, they are heavy croppers and delicious!!!

Yep, I know they're climbing, going to put up a little wigwam of canes in the pots. I have a feeling that the canes I've got aren't going to be tall enough though  :-\

Glad to hear that they are yummy and heavy croppers, make best use of my limited space!  ;D ;D

Excellent site DP, it tells me that my Cobra beans grow to 1.3 m (4 Ft), which is exactly the height of the canes I have.  :D
And Hurrah! Debs to your bean germination  ;D Hope mine germinate soon in this sun.

DP I just consider myself very lucky that slugs seem to have a hard time climbing up to the second floor!  ;D ;D
I seem to not have any slugs at all. Shame I can't say the same thing about aphids :-\

Well I sowed some beans on 31 may, and quite a few were starting to emerge from the compost yesterday  :D

Now I just have to wait for them to be big enough to plant out, oh and the pot to be empty of spuds.  :)
