Title: April Competition, open for entries
Post by: Admin aka Dan on May 09, 2005, 09:43:01
Hi all,

The April competition is open for entries, and in response to some questions I've received, some rules  :-\ ...

Hope everyone understands and we continue to get excellent photographs entered.

Oh and lastly, good luck everyone.

Here's my entry. A tree on our allotment site, taken just before a rain storm hit. The white blossom seemed almost luminous against the threatening clouds.

This photo is of the Jimirah Beach Hotel, beach and marina in Dubai.  It was taken from the resteraunt at the top of the Burj el Arab where I was treated for my 50th Birthday.  Posh or what  ;D ;) ;D

trying for something different. I have decided to withdraw my photo due to being classed a cheat. It doesn't make it any easier by at the bottom of your comments 'please don't be offended by my comments'.
My only intention was to try and show a photo that wasn't the norm. >:( >:(
After the kind words of encouragement I have decided to re-post my photo.
A big thank you to all.

how did you do it?
Title: Re: April Competition, open for entries
Post by: Dirkdigger on May 11, 2005, 21:43:59
A little bit of layer work in photoshop. You copy the photo onto a new layer, alter the way it looks, then blend it with the other layers. Still keeping the original photo underneath. Bit like a cartoon on clear acetate Glad you like it, as I said something different I appreciate wont be to everyones liking.

Hmm i wont let my parents see that photo. They spent their 30th wedding anniverary in Dubai. Been going on about it ever since ::).Didnt do what you did, so they'd be green with envy  ;).

Great photo BTW

PS to all:

I see the ante has been well and truly upped with those edited/enhanced photos. IMO the entries should be unadulterated photographs. Using computer software to enhance then is CHEATING.

OK heres my entry.

Tulip - dont know the variety, been in the garden for years.

Irony is, whilst i now have a new camera with optical zoom etc, this was taken with the old one - I at last got to grips with its macro setting!!

PS the only thing that has been done to this photo is reduce its size - so there!

Er sorry pat - perhaps cheating in your case is too strong a word. I just feel that by adding to or enhancing a photo in that way is not photography and immediately makes a photo altered in such a way look better than those that are not (which in themselves might be brilliant photos).

Plus, some of us arent all that good as some of you at editing photos in that way.

Please dont take offence at my comments, as they are not intended to do so.
Title: Re: April Competition, open for entries
Post by: Glyn on May 13, 2005, 13:11:24
I don't think it's cheating...all the photos you see in the media has been altered. I should know, as I used to run a Photo re-touching business, now that's cheating.
Digital photos almost always come out slightly on the dark side, hence why your digi cam comes with editing software.
What is wrong with enhancing a photo if it improves it?
What next....are we all to use the same pixled camera???
Look at the photo, do you like it, then vote for it.

Yeah Heldi it should be for fun....

I'm glad I've evoked a response. As I commented, trying to do something different. . At the end of the day, by digitally changing a picture doesnt automatically make it better. I was trying to create a moorcroft sort of pottery effect and thought no better place to show it than here.
I have added a copy of the image I started with. I thought it was a nice photo, just wanted to have a play.

'sandersj89', I think dan made it clear at the start of the competition, one photo per member could be entered.

Feel free to post more if you wish, but i guess only the first one will be submitted for the vote.

Gosh i certainly opened a can of worms when i 'commented' on editing pictures, didnt I?  :o

How rude of you!  Don't you think that all of the photographs you see in the newspapers, magazines, websites, books, catalogues and even the front of seedpackets have been touched up in some way or other?  In which case you could refuse to buy them for not being honest with their pics.

DD, put your picture back on, the response from EVERYBODY not just ONE PERSON would give you the answer you need to know.

For goodness sake....  ::)

I agree with Yellow Petals, put it back on DD and take off the other one.  Those who don't like it or think it's cheating can vote for the one they do like.  ::)
Please DD put it back on.  :)

Title: Re: April Competition, open for entries

Have to say that I agree with both of the above.  I have no objection to a bit of photo 'tweeking'  as long as we are told that it has been done.  In no way can that be considered cheating can it  ??? ??? ??? That way folk can decide for themselves if they consider the photo is the best and not the self appointed morality brigade.  Nuf said  :-\  :-X
Title: Re: April Competition, open for entries
Post by: Glyn on May 14, 2005, 22:04:38
We are all losing touch here.
like what was said. If you like the photo then vote for it. How it was made is irrelevant to what you are voting for. Some people have all the bell's and whistles, and still don't know how to create a decent photo, after all, you can't make a bad photo good? So it's down to the viewer who likes what he/she See's and votes for it.
This is supposed to be fun so Let's leave it that way.. eh?

;D ;D ;D ;D

Richard how can you be so rude!.REALLY.

DD please put your picture back on the board. Do not worry about self appointed policing we shall all let you know what we think of your photo and i am sure you got the message by our replies.
Pat do i need to say to you just ignore.

Richard i think you feel you can override Dan`s position with your remarks you are always doing it WHY ???.  Rosebud.

In the spirit of this month's competition, I thought some jiggery pokery was required to produce the definitive prize winning photo ... so I have been playing.

The theme is self-portrait.

Here is the start photo before Photoshop was involved ...

Then I got to work, and a few layers later this is what I ended up with - surely a prize winner!!!!

PS Before anyone gets too upset with me, I had better disqualify myself - the photo was not taken in April ;)
